  1. Reasons for web sites to support old web browsers FOR ALL ETERNITY:
  2.
  3. * Newer smartphones that support newer browsers have planned obsolescence like non-replaceable batteries (this crap should be illegal already).
  4. * Newer browsers like Chrome since mid-2019 enforce the highly annoying pull-to-refresh gesture. The option to turn this annoyance off was removed. Not to mention legacy add-ons since Firefox 57 Quantum. Many of those extensions were never remade, for example, Tab Mix Plus.
  5. * Firefox for Android got rid of the power user menu about:config around 2018.
  6. * New browsers break compatibility with established extensions.
  7. * Enforced updates are somewhat like planned obsolescence. It gives users the fear that their device will stop working.
  8. * Kiwi browser for Android removed background video playback in 2019 due to an enforcement by Google. Desktop browsers had this for decades, so mobile should have too. But Google, as so often, says "sorry, you can't have nice stuff".
  9. * Chrome 109 added a useless and annoyong warning message to downloads in incognito mode.
  10. * New browsers block screenshots in incognito mode. No one asked for this. Incognito mode is helpful for testing websites from new visitors' perspective.
  11. * In 2019, the list view for tabs was removed from Chrome Mobile. Only the list view showed both title and URL.
  12. * In 2021, FTP support was removed from Firefox and Chrome.
  13. * Forcing users to upgrade their browsers hurts the environment, since users need to buy new smartphones that support the newer browsers.
  14.
  15. By forcing users to upgrade their browsers, you take away useful functionality and you hurt the environment.
  16.
  17. If new versions always had all functionality of preceeding versions, as they would in an ideal world, this would be no big deal. But that is nothing but a pipe dream that would be too good to be true. Reality speaks a different language.
