  1. Session ID: BOF-6554
  2. Session Title: PHP, Ruby and friends - going mobile
  3. Session Description: In this BOF we will see wether open source scripting language originally designed for other usages (e.g., producing dynamic web pages) and known for it's rapid application developing and wide community support (e.g., PHP, Ruby/JRuby), can be fit into the mobile devices world.
  4.
  5. The audience, after seeing live demos of scripting languages running on a mobile, will come out of the BOF more open to the idea of scripting languages on mobile handsets.
  6.
  7. So how does the idea of JRuby on top of the CLDC-HI HotSpot VM sound?
  8. How does the idea of JRuby ported to JavaME sound?
  9. Whacky?! so for sure you would like to know that it is already out there!
  10. Last year in JavaOne 2006, JRuby on JavaME was presented and this year, (November 2007) it is released to the open source.
  11. JavaME is not used yet as a system development platform but as an applications platform. However, what will happen 5 years from now should be a fascinating discussion.
  12.
  13. And how about PHP running on your mobile?! PHP has long evolve into mature language that is used to write full scale applications and not just as run on request scripts. This power which brings you as close to native languages as possible without the hustle involve in it, memory management, strict syntax etc , can give the mobile device application developer the freedom and ease of high level programming language on a resource restricted device.
  14.
  15.
  16. In this BOF we will discover the virtues of PHP and Ruby as productive languages and what are the chances and challenges to enter the mobile domain; the connection to the wide spread Java ME language which will make this entry softer and see where OEMs, software developers and the users can benefit from having a plethora of development options.
  17.
  18. The discussion will open the eyes of Java platform developers to a new possibility by brain storming a likely varied audience of developers from different backgrounds and different perspective.
  19.
  20. A strong debate for sure - the rich variety of Java developers in JavaOne can not be matched by internal companies brainstorming where most engineers are trapped in the company paradigms.
  21. It is expected to have different opinions on computing languages, real life requirements and where should Java technology head on mobile devices.
  22.
  23. The word to describe this discussion – whacky!
  24. Track: Cool Stuff, Cool Tools and Languages; Tools and Languages
  25. Session Type: Birds-of-a-Feather Session (BOF)
  26. Duration: 50 minutes
  27. Speaker(s): Roy Ben Hayun, Sun Microsystems; Assaf Yavnai, Sun Microsystems
