- tl;dr
- My stream for the near future is:
- For a while, I think Twitch has been on a downward trend. They increased the chat delay which makes it very hard for me to communicate with my chat. I say things and people don't respond until a minute later, so I end up repeating myself like a buffoon. Furthermore I have always had major problems accessing the site - the entire thing is Flash, which is really hard on my computer. Oftentimes my stream drops and is completely unable to reconnect, forcing me to stop streaming for the day. However, I have put up with this, using tools like Livestreamer and IRC to work around these issues.
- With the new changes regarding VODs, Twitch gave 0 notice and basically fucked with a lot of peoples' content. Many people got their vods muted, and speedrunners got the shaft with the new rules about length of highlights. Sure, they reversed the length limit after massive outcry, but they could just as easily have ASKED beforehand.
- Twitch clearly don't feel like they need to communicate major changes to their users, things that affect a lot of people. I think corporate dollars have overtaken quality of service in terms of Twitch's priorities. Again, this isn't about one incident, but a pattern.
- I think Twitch has become complacent because they are a monopoly - they have no competitor who threatens their business. This leads to a shitty situation where Twitch can wield power against individual streamers.
- You probably remember the 'Horror incident', where a Twitch staff member abused his power and banned a lot of people for speaking out against him. Even streamers who got hundreds of viewers got banned, and Reddit posts about the topic were censored by a Twitch admin. Recently, Twitch started censoring mentions of hitbox in stream titles, and in an AMA the CEO responded to many questions in a defensive and argumentative manner. This fits right in with the pattern of behavior that goes back to the Horror thing. The company hasn't changed at all. It's unprofessional and a shitty way for a company to behave.
- Even though the recent changes don't hurt me directly, future changes might, and this pattern of behavior definitely does. Given this, I think it can't hurt to try out other streaming sites. Right now Twitch don't have competitors in terms of size, but they do have competitors in terms of quality of service - Hitbox. Right now, Hitbox equals or beats Twitch in many of the things I care about. They have almost no chat delay (<5 seconds), HTML 5 controls so I can actually use the website, a decent-sized userbase with many of my friends having moved over, and other neat features like polls, images in chat, etc. As a small streamer, I think Hitbox may provide a superior service, but I have to try it to know for sure.
- I'm not "switching for good" necessarily, there are still some things Twitch does better. But I think it's only fair to try out Hitbox for a while and see for myself.
