  5. The following steps will enable a dedicated, fully encrypted installation of Ubuntu Linux to run simultaneously alongside ChromeOS on a Chromebook or Pixelbook computer.
  6.
  7. 1) After enabling developer mode in Chrome OS (https://www.androidcentral.com/how-enable-developer-mode-chrome-os), download crouton into the local system's Downloads folder by clicking the following download link: https://goo.gl/fd3zc
  8. 2) Install the crouton integration add-on from the Chrome store at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/crouton-integration/gcpneefbbnfalgjniomfjknbcgkbijom/related
  9. 3) Enter the crosh commandline (with CONTROL + ALT + T)
  10. 4) Enter the core shell with the command, "shell"
  11. 5) Install crouton in one of the two following ways:
  12. a) For basic (non-touch screen) systems:
  13. sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -e -t xfce
  14. b) For touch screen enabled systems:
  15. sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -e -t touch,xfce
  16. 5) During the installation sequence you will be asked to set up an encryption passphrase. Record this in a secure password manager or in a private journal and take care to never loose this passphrase as your new Linux installation will essentially become inaccessible.
  17. 6) During the installation sequence you will be asked to provide a new username and password for the first Ubuntu user (pick something simple and record your selections carefully).
  18. 7) After installation is complete, enter the new Linux system with the following command, "sudo startxfce4"
  19.
  20. Once logged into the new Linux system, you can cycle between the two operating systems without a reboot with the following shortcuts: (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+BACK) and (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+FORWARD). If these shortcuts do not work, then you are probably running a Chromebook with an Intel or AMD chipset (instead of ARM). In this case, use the following shortcuts instead: (CTRL+ALT+BACK) and/or (CTRL+ALT+FORWARD) + (CTRL+ALT+REFRESH).
  21.
  22. When returning to your computer after a full shutdown, you can access the internal encrypted Linux system with the following simple steps:
  23.
  24. 1) After logging into your ChromeOS user account, enter the crosh commandline (with CONTROL + ALT + T)
  25. 2) Enter the core shell with the command, "shell"
  26. 3) Enter the Linux system with the command, "sudo startxfce4" (for graphical login) or "sudo enter-chroot" (for command line login)
