  42. In psychedelic swinging 60s style, the dreaded thief (and killer) Diabolik wreaks havoc on a generic European country for his own financial gain and amusement. He shares an extravagant underground lair (and a giant bed of money) with his curvaceous, superficial girlfriend...who uses her awesome powers of wig-wearing to help Diabolik kill innocent people and steal billions from the government. Nonetheless, Diabolik is the "hero" of the film because he must face off against bumbling cops and revenge-seeking mafiosos.
  43. In a generic European country of the late 60's, Diabolik is an anti-hero whose life consists on preparing schemes to steal government money and make a fool of the entire police department. Helped by his gorgeous girlfriend Eva, Diabolik begins by stealing a few dollars, but his duel of wit and audacity with police inspector Ginko will take them both to some extreme consequences. Based on the Italian comic books by sisters Angela and Luciana Giussani.
  44. The cult director Mario Bava toiled and dabbled in different genres before settling on the horror arena. He always elevated every movie he made with his sardonic sense of humor and warped sense of time and place. From the outrageous getup Diabolik wears to the wink-of-an-eye final shot, this movie exudes cool and hipness in stark contrast to a "hippy" generation concerned more with foolish radical politics. Realism is the enemy in a Bava film. He delights in turning everyday life upside down, creating a child-like kaleidescope of colors and textures. He uses his camera training to shoot at funky angles and in deep focus fields. Diabolik has a fetish for head-to-toe bodysuits. Strange? Not at all. Diabolik, after all, is a criminal. But we root for him over the decent civil servant, Inspector Ginco, who is hot on his trail to the very end. Ennio Morricone's score is glorious and wacky. I've heard the original studio tapes are lost forever. Sounds like a job for Diabolik.
  45. Candy-colored French-Italian co-production, cops-and-robbers stuff perfectly satisfying for some--though with a tiring amount of set-ups framing its very thin story. Master thief Diabolik steals 10 million dollars from an armored car, making himself enemy number one of gang leader Valmont, who puts himself in-cahoots with the police to bring Diabolik to justice. Terrific art direction and set designs, plus a jazzy-cool music score by Ennio Morricone, nearly make the film worth catching for non-genre fans; otherwise, director Mario Bava's tricks with the camera are in service of so little, and star John Phillip Law can't even find a three-dimensional character to create within the material. Bava also served as producer and had a hand in the screenplay, based on the Italian comic "Diabolik", which bears more than a passing resemblance to the French crime series "Fantômas". ** from ****
