  1. I feel the servomotor in the left shoulder acting up again. It should be fine, so long as I don't have to lift too much weight. Though if it's the hydraulics it might mess with the rest of the suit's systems. I'm in deep shit if the legs decide to go out. I look up at the sky, it's getting dark, but I can just make out clouds on the horizon. It's still 10 hours before I'm back at the vault. I could stop and try to do repairs but I don't want to risk getting caught in that kind of rain. I'll just have to keep going and hope for the best.
  2.
  3. 2 hours in, I spot another catcher. This one's alive. I zoom in with the helmet's telescope, poor guy looks like he hasn't eaten in days. He has a charmander with him. Not too much of a threat, so there's probably no reason to avoid him. He jumps in surprise as I come into sight, I raise my arms in what I hope is a show of non-aggression. “Just passing through buddy, didn't mean to startle you.”
  4.
  5. He's still pretty shocked at seeing me, he must not see intact power-armor like this every day. He suddenly seems to decide himself on something and nods to his pokemon. I shake my head, “Trust me kid, you don't want to do this.”
  6.
  7. “Just get out of the armor, and walk away. If not my friend here's going to burn you out.” I can tell by his voice that he's not kidding.
  8.
  9. “I've handled charmanders before. I don't want to hurt you two.” If my suit was in prime condition I wouldn't be worried about fighting them. Just last month Janice managed to install some impressive fireproofing in the plating after we found a magmar hiding in the lower levels. Nearly killed some of the technicians before we could flush it out with some of the coolant. But with some shot hydraulics I'm going to be slow. A lucky tackle could take me out. I wish we'd been able to secure more pokeballs. More actual pokemon to do this kind of stuff. Humans aren't supposed to fight pokemon, damn it.
  10.
  11. The catcher must have given some signal because in a flash the charmander's jumping at me. I raise my forarm and just manage to deflect the tackle. The metal clangs loudly in my ears and I hear the armor's servos strain. No serious damage. Before I can finish turning he's unleashed an ember. The flaming mass strikes me in the chest. I hear warning sensors going off, but it all stays in the green. As he's coming in low for some kind of attack at my legs I grab him by the tail. Next thing I know I have him by the neck. I'm not thinking much anymore as I lift him and bring him down onto the rocky floor.
  12.
  13. The catcher's screaming something, I ignore him. The charmander's not quitting, he tries to bite at my face but the faceplate holds. I bring him down again, hard. He yelps this time. I'm not sure if it's a broken bone or something more superficial. The catcher's whacking me in the back with some kind of crowbar, I turn around fast enough to push him back. He winds up flat on his back with a bloody nose.
  14.
  15. I feel my temper boiling, I could step on his scrawny neck and drag the charmander back to base. Janice can force him into a pokeball, or do whatever she does to turn them over to our side. I don't know why I hesitate. Seeing him there, cowering in the dirt. I don't feel like being the bad guy today. I reach into a pocket and pull out a package. I toss it to the catcher.
  16.
  17. “Feed your charmander this and give him some rest. It'll help mend the bones if they're broken.” I start walking away but I pause. I look back, then reach into my pocket and grab a protein bar. I toss it to him too. “Just. Look out for yourself out there, okay kid?”
  18.
  19. He doesn't say anything, he just looks at me in shock. It'd be nice if we could take more of these indignants into the vault. But we barely have enough equipment to feed the research teams. It's just the way things are. I try not to think about it and focus on my footsteps.
  20.
  21. Another 8 hours before I'm home.
