His father was a famous weight-lifter back in South Korea but after an incident that injured his back, he could no longer do weight-lifting. Later, he moved to the US where he met his wife who is Korean-American, Na-young. They got married and had his older brother then five years later Gil-Su. Both him and his brother got into sports, but Gil-Su fell in love with dancing than his brother. His brother moved to Seoul when he was 25 to join the Olympic wrestling team. Gil-Su moved to Busan with his girlfriend, Sumin to audition for FNC, but was turned down. He auditioned again at Happy Face and got in.
