  1. Section 20: The Turbulent Land (Part 1)
  2.
  3.
  4.
  5. A few days later, you’re finally approaching the capital. You are just outside of the Oprichniki’s detection range. Here, the Shadow Border will stop while Beowulf and Billy procure some bicorns for the next stage of the journey. Holmes suggests that you take a nap for now. Mashu sees off Beowulf, Billy and Patsy as they go off to find some bicorns.
  6.
  7.
  8. Mashu:
  9. …Hah… it’s really cold… my breath is freezing…
  10.
  11.
  12. Musashi:
  13. If you’re not a Servant you’ll really freeze to death, eh. Ooh~, I’m shivering, I’m shivering.
  14.
  15.
  16. Mashu:
  17. Musashi-san? Aren’t you supposed to be standing by with Holmes-san in the command room?
  18.
  19.
  20. Musashi:
  21. Well, I sorta snuck out from that place. There’s nothing for me to do there anyway.
  22. I thought I’d rather talk with Mashu-san. Can I sit besides you?
  23.
  24.
  25. Mashu:
  26. Y-Yes. I don’t mind, but… yes.
  27.
  28.
  29. Musashi and Mashu strike up a conversation. Mashu marvels at how Musashi has been not only to America, but to both northern and southern countries. She asks which of the southern countries Musashi has visited. Places like Guam, or Indonesia?
  30.
  31.
  32. Musashi:
  33. Hehehe. It might be strange, but I found myself in Hawaii! Well, they knew Japanese somehow so it was of great help!
  34. There’s a great udon shop there too~! A shop called Maru… something!
  35. Anyway, Hawaii was really fun! The goddess Pele had a really troublesome personality, but we became good friends in the end!
  36.
  37.
  38. Mashu:
  39. Looks like Musashi-san is really used to travelling. You can adapt to the situation no matter where you rayshift to.
  40.
  41.
  42. Musashi:
  43. I-Is that so? I’m always being chased around for dining and dashing, and getting involved in troublesome matters, though?
  44.
  45.
  46. Mashu:
  47. But you have fun with that commotion, and you overcome it. To be honest, it’s really something I admire. I…
  48. I can’t be like that, it seems.
  49. Even though I should be enjoying heading to various lands outside Chaldea…
  50. …Right now, that is all very terrifying.
  51. I should’ve known that what I know from the records and what I know from experience are two different things.
  52. Even so… even though I could fight before, right now my shield is just so heavy.
  53. …I’m afraid of the people in this Lostbelt, of their way of life…
  54.
  55.
  56. Musashi:
  57. Hmm. So that’s why Mashu-san doesn’t go out on the frontlines.
  58. Guda-kun used to brag about how “Mashu’s shield is the number one in the world! For me, she’s the most reliable girl in the world!”
  59. I was wondering why such a strong girl wasn’t by Guda-kun’s side, but so that is how it is.
  60.
  61.
  62. Mashu:
  63. ….I’m very sorry for being the only one to stay in the back to provide support.
  64. Even though I have the strength to fight as a Servant, to think I’d be unable to battle because of a problem with my mental state---
  65.
  66.
  67. Musashi:
  68. Hm? So you’re troubled over being unable to fight. That can’t be helped, can it?
  69. Anyone would be scared of killing.
  70. What Mashu-san is worried about is nothing to feel guilty over, you know?
  71.
  72.
  73. Mashu:
  74. Eh---- Musashi-san will feel scared too?
  75. The same Musashi-san that has travelled to many worlds and survived each and every time?
  76.
  77.
  78. Musashi:
  79. …I’m shocked. I’m being thought of as a gorilla, it seems…
  80. Well, I might really like duels, but there’s no such thing as not being scared.
  81. In my case, I only enjoy it when “it’s the only thing that can be done”.
  82. If there’s other things that happen, other things I want to do, I wouldn’t engage in duels.
  83. Well, I’m still continuing to wander because I’m a thug who hasn’t been able to find “another objective”, so let’s shelf that for now.
  84. You could do it before, but you can’t do it now. You could work hard before, but you can’t now.
  85. I know that. All of you have only known of a battle that everyone desires.
  86. No matter how righteous you are, no matter how many people your actions save.
  87. Regardless of these circumstances, your opponent detests you and rocks are thrown at you from all sides. These are the sort of battles you know nothing of.
  88.
  89.
  90. Mashu:
  91. ...
  92.
  93.
  94. Musashi:
  95. Conflict between fellow humans are but attempts to impose each’s circumstances upon the other, in the end.
  96. No matter how it ends up, the only thing that remains unchanging is the fact that your opponent will be made unhappy.
  97. You came to this extreme world without experiencing those fights. That’s pretty tough.
  98.
  99.
  100. Mashu:
  101. …What should I do? Is it better for my thoughts to shut down like that of a machine?
  102. Did Musashi-san overcome it that way too?
  103.
  104.
  105. Musashi:
  106. Not really. No matter what circumstances my opponent has, all I’ll think is “I see, there’s that opinion too.”.
  107. Then, if I cleanly cut my opponent down, I’m in the right. The fight’s over with that.
  108. On the other hand, if I fall without defeating them, then I was in the wrong. And there, my fight will end.
  109. As a swordsman, I’m that sort of bastard. That’s why Mashu-san can’t use me as a reference.
  110.
  111.
  112. Mashu:
  113. …That’s right. I have to solve my own problems…
  114. But… I’ve been thinking…
  115. About the history of everyone living in this Russia, and about whether our actions are correct.
  116.
  117.
  118. Musashi:
  119. …Whether one’s self is correct, huh.
  120. Well, in the end there’s nothing but to carry on!
  121. When it comes to a question of life and death, the answer will come naturally. That’s the true nature of man.
  122. Aah, but Mashu’s worries are precious, so it’s fine to keep thinking about it. That’s the only thing I can clearly state.
  123.
  124.
  125. Mashu:
  126. I-Is that right…? I might only be wasting my opportunities, though…
  127.
  128.
  129. Musashi:
  130. It’s never a waste to think about things. Abandoning thought is why your strength weakens.
  131. ---Even though you might not be able to save anything by yourself. ---Even though you might not leave anything of yourself behind.
  132. But even so, to continue worrying about what you can do, that’s something I think has considerable energy.
  133. Well, there’re those who pile up more and more feelings of guilt the more they worry, and let it hinder their steps, but you’re the opposite.
  134. You’re the type who’ll ultimately turn your worries into strength. That is why you should not deny your self which is suffering now.
  135. That’ll be fine for you. That’s the type of opponent I fear!
  136.
  137.
  138. Mashu:
  139. Musashi-san---
  140.
  141.
  142. Musashi:
  143. Ah, it’s not a problem that can be solved overnight, and since I’m around this time, I’ll take care of things with a bang!
  144. The Thunder Emperor Ivan’s no big deal. Here, I’ll magnificently return the favour I received in Shimousa!
  145.
  146.
  147. ===
  148.
  149.
  150. Amongst the mages who were chosen for their compatibility with rayshifting, the A-Team were special existences even in that number.
  151.
  152. The genius called the true successor of Animusphere. Kirschtaria Wodime.
  153.
  154. The modern-day Valkyrie. Ophelia Phamrsolone.
  155.
  156. Cheerful, popular, and a complete mystery outside of that. Scandinavia Peperoncino.
  157.
  158. The dandy man more like a gangster than a mage. Beryl Gut.
  159.
  160. The technician who was good at socializing even though she was a misanthrope of few words. Akuta Hinako.
  161.
  162. …A character who is like an empty [hole] in reality. Daybit Sem Void.
  163.
  164. And the only success of the Demi-Servant experiments. Mashu Kyrielight.
  165.
  166. ---I’m probably the eighth.
  167.
  168. Kadoc Zemlupus. I know full well my lack of ability.
  169.
  170. My skill in magecraft is average, and the history of my clan’s crest brief.
  171.
  172. It is only about two hundred years. Not a bloodline that has anything to be proud of.
  173.
  174. But even so, I was chosen for my compatibility as a Master. Not because of my bloodlines, not because of my magecraft, but for a strength that I was born with.
  175.
  176. There was suffering in having wasted half my life, and rejoicement in being told that I was needed.
  177.
  178.
  179.
  180. I came to Chaldea, and after joining the A-Team, my pride and my feelings of inferiority became even stronger.
  181.
  182. Everyone was first-class, a priceless genius.
  183.
  184. Mashu Kyrielight was just a designer baby born and raised in Chaldea, something like a piece of equipment.
  185.
  186. She was close to being a homunculus. Although she had human rights, there was no human personality or activity to be expected from her.
  187.
  188. Wodime, the ever traditional mage, must have thought that it was fine for her to just be there.
  189.
  190. Of course, I felt the same. Daybit or Akuta did not interact with her more than necessary either.
  191.
  192. Pepe and Ophelia were… just inviting her for food, saying something about being female comrades and troubling her.
  193.
  194. …Somehow, even that Kyrielight was necessary personnel for the A-Team.
  195.
  196. The other members had their own expertise in matters outside of their rayshift compatibility.
  197.
  198. I don’t have that. I don’t have anything besides this.
  199.
  200. I could only cling to the coincidence of being able to command a Servant excellently.
  201.
  202.
  203.
  204. Peperoncino:
  205. Seriously, it’s not really that much of a coincidence, okay? You should consider excellence in ability and the compatibility in restoring the Human Order separately.
  206. It has nothing to do with whether your personal ability is poor.
  207. That’s only natural. Because it’s fate giving you a kabedon! Kya~☆
  208. So that’s why you must first make this fate your own. That’s where your real starting line is, Kadoc.
  209. Me? I’m fine without something like fate. After all, I’ve been betrayed by fate since a long time ago.
  210. But for you, it starts from now. Isn’t it nice, being a wall for the sake of strengthening the Human Order.
  211. It should be a dream come true for any boy. See, it’s like being a superhero, right?
  212.
  213.
  214.
  215. As if telling me to buck up, Pepe patted my shoulder.
  216.
  217. Although I was reluctant to let others invade my personal space, it was strange that I found it hard to be offended by him.
  218.
  219. …He’s right, I must make fate mine. The humiliation, the insults, the scorn, I’ll break it all down.
  220.
  221.
  222.
  223. Da Vinci:
  224. The special traits of a Caster Servant? Well, I’m an all-capable genius, an exception amongst exceptions.
  225. But if you want to hear from me even then, I’ll say that Casters are difficult, in a different sense than Berserkers.
  226. Amongst those, I’m still considered alright. You should be able to understand, right?
  227. A real mage would not think of humans as being human in the first place. Their thoughts and their techniques are just that isolated.
  228. It’s best that you throw away the thought of asking for teachings, because it’s not of a level where you can manage something just by doing so.
  229.
  230.
  231.
  232. ---Well, that’s probably right.
  233.
  234. But even so, I chose Caster.
  235.
  236. If possible, I hoped that they would have means by which to supply themselves with magical energy.
  237.
  238. Entering the Coffin, I tried to endure the sensation of my consciousness coming undone.
  239.
  240. Soon, the journey to restore the Human Order would begin. Fuyuki in Japan.
  241.
  242. Although I’ve heard from Akuta about what kind of city it was, it doesn’t seem like a particularly special place.
  243.
  244. No, perhaps that is exactly why there must be something there. I mustn’t let my guard down.
  245.
  246. I will thoroughly do my best, I will whole-heartedly do my best. I am without a doubt, one of the chosen---
  247.
  248.
  249.
  250. ---------------------------------------------------------------------aah.
  251.
  252.
  253.
  254. It all became meaningless. Without being able to prove my usefulness, before even taking a single step, my life was reaped away.
  255.
  256. Even so. It should have ended here.
  257.
  258. Even though the inferiority complex that I bore in life should have disappeared---
  259.
  260. Saved, it was said.
  261.
  262. By the only one left behind, a substitute who was an extra amongst extras, who was nothing more than a mere amateur.
  263.
  264. In the place of we who could not stand on that stage, he accomplished a great deed which anyone would acknowledge.
  265.
  266. ---It’s not my business. It’s something I should just treat as the affairs of others. Normally. Usually.
  267.
  268. But, what came flying into my chest was an intense jealousy.
  269.
  270. …Frustrating. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating!
  271.
  272. Aah, what unbearable and miserable frustration. I could have done that too!
  273.
  274.
  275.
  276. ???:
  277. ---A change in the conditions has been confirmed.
  278. A proposal to you who have been chosen, a suggestion to you who have been discarded.
  279.
  280.
  281.
  282. …A voice other than my own reaches me. With an indifferent tone, it told of urgent matters.
  283.
  284.
  285.
  286. ???:
  287. If you wish for glory, then choose resurrection. If you wish for indolence, then choose eternal rest.
  288. God is fine with either choice.
  289.
  290.
  291.
  292. …Is there even any other choice?. Any living being would prioritize their own survival.
  293.
  294. The other six also agreed with that choice. What was given unto us were “territories” and “Heroic Spirits”.
  295.
  296.
  297.
  298. ???:
  299. I am that which descends upon this world from another planet.
  300. The Fantasy Tree will reset this planet. It will create a new mythology.
  301. Crush the Panhuman History and construct God with your hands. Build the laws that will accept me.
  302.
  303.
  304.
  305. ---Lostbelt.
  306.
  307. The land of Russia in a 21st century where the Thunder Emperor has continued to live. And the Servant whom I summoned was Caster.
  308.
  309. Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova. The princess of tragedy who bore the end of the Romanov dynasty on her back.
  310.
  311. …But, Russia cannot continue this way. That way of life will completely lead the world to failure. The Yaga’s cycle of life and death is slow, but surely hastening…
  312.
  313. And there’s the matter of Ivan the Terrible, that broken Tsar.
  314.
  315. While not allowing the Fantasy Tree to take root, he was thinking of invading the other Lostbelts…!
  316.
  317. That is definitely bad. That is why he has to go.
  318.
  319. His reign of four hundred and fifty years is to end, and Russia is to be freed from the Thunder Emperor’s rule.
  320.
  321. Not for the sake of the Yaga, but for hers.
  322.
  323.
  324. Anastasia:
  325. ---I’m fine with anything. No, that’s not it.
  326. I hate…. I hate the innocent people who killed me.
  327. However, at the same time I am a person of the Romanov dynasty, and not Ivan the Terrible.
  328. I will bear this hatred, and while keeping my guard up unflinchingly for life---
  329. I will unite Russia and bring peace. This is the mercy of the Romanovs, and also the duty of the Romanovs.
  330.
  331.
  332.
  333. ---As she made her declaration, I could see the poise of an Empress in her.
  334.
  335. Very well. Then, I will use all of my wits.
  336.
  337. I will make use of everything and trample over everyone.
  338.
  339. We will likely have to confront Ivan the Terrible. Countermeasures against him are needed.
  340.
  341. If found out, I will be killed. At the end of torture I will meet my death for the second time.
  342.
  343. …But that’s fine. Even if that happens, it’s not any more awful than the first death.
  344.
  345. Rise up. Clench my teeth and endure the fear.
  346.
  347. It is all--- for the sake of this world.
  348.
  349.
  350. ===
  351.
  352.
  353. In the palace, Salieri is with the Priest. It seems that he was spared because Kadoc doesn’t want the Servants to be killed, if possible. The Priest says that Kadoc has ambition, and a wall that he must surpass. It is better to have another pawn on hand than not.
  354.
  355. Salieri remembers something.
  356.
  357.
  358. Salieri:
  359. My memories have been tampered with, that’s what you said. And that I’d meet Amadeus.
  360.
  361.
  362. Priest:
  363. Oh, did I say such a thing?
  364.
  365.
  366. Salieri:
  367. At that time, I thought that Amadeus was on the side of Panhuman History…
  368. But that’s wrong. Amadeus is not their companion. Nor do they know where he is.
  369. He is nowhere in Yaga Moskva. He is not amongst the rebels either.
  370. Was he never summoned to this Russia in the first place? That’s not it. Amadeus was certainly here. He should have been here.
  371. If so---
  372.
  373.
  374. Priest:
  375. A simple process of elimination. ---Very well, I think that the time is right.
  376. Indeed, we have been sheltering his godly genius. You have also been guided to his room.
  377.
  378.
  379. Salieri:
  380. ---What…!?
  381.
  382.
  383. Priest:
  384. It is all as your spirit had wished for.
  385. Although it pains me to have to reopen those wounds…
  386. If you wish for it, I can only comply as a man of the cloth. Salieri. The Man in Gray. One who has lost his sanity.
  387. I will unseal the memories that you have overwritten yourself.
  388. Now then--- it is time for the requiem.
  389.
  390.
  391. ===
  392.
  393.
  394. Billy parts from your group here so that he can launch his diversion. He bids you farewell and prays that you will be able to defeat Ivan. He’ll meet up with you afterwards, though only if he survives.
  395.
  396.
  397. Guda:
  398. Then, let’s pinky swear on it.
  399.
  400.
  401. Billy blushes.
  402.
  403.
  404. Billy:
  405. Okay.
  406. …Isn’t this a bit embarrassing?
  407. Anyway, it’s a promise. No matter what, the ruffian king will rush to your side!
  408.
  409.
  410. Billy rides off. Beowulf remarks that it’s finally the real match, though it’s one full of unknowns. He notes that you seem rather calm.
  411.
  412.
  413. Guda:
  414. I have reliable comrades.
  415.
  416.
  417. Beowulf:
  418. …Tch. Hey, Musashi. I’m feeling a little embarrassed.
  419.
  420.
  421. Musashi:
  422. You’ve got to repay that trust, eh?
  423.
  424.
  425. Beowulf:
  426. Yeah, I know. Let’s go!
