   ⤷ xue baozhai, born as the only child of her generation in the xue family, wasn’t the most privileged child. she was raised in the calm countryside of hongcun to a pair of small town convenience shop owners. they weren’t very well off and lived in a quaint house that wasn’t very big but to them, it was home. as a result, their family developed as very tight knit. between her, her parents, and her grandmother – a wily woman who most likely is to blame for how scandalous bao is – there wasn’t any room for love to be lost. they bickered like small children all the time, of course, but their family was, at the end of it all, close as can be. the only ones they considered that close outside of their relations would be the KIM family, more commonly known in china as the jin's.
   ⤷ the jin matriarch had been childhood friends with xue meixu, bao's mother, which is partially why they ended up so close. when meixu married weige, she introduced the jinmatriarch, along with her newfound husband, and the four fit like a puzzle. the icing on the cake was when they moved in as next door neighbors after having kids born in the same year – what luck. bao, born only a few months after the jin's son, become inseparable to the boy as a result of her parents pushing. jin longguo, aka kim yongguk, was bao's partner in crime – the two had been best friends since before they could remember, and she regarded him as a brother more than anything. yongguk was the calm to bao's storm, and although he often went along with her more insane schemes, he was always there to fish her out of trouble. throughout high school, many couldn’t believe that the two weren’t dating, and were often surprised at bao's adamantation against such a claim. (unbeknownst to her, of course, because of how dense she is, yongguk has been in love with her since they were young.)
   ⤷ and yeah, bao loves him as a best friend – no, a brother – but sometimes it gets too much for her. she knows it’s childish and petty and overall completely unreasonable to be jealous of yongguk, her sweet best friend, but she can’t help it. because for as long as she’s been around him, she’s been compared to him as well. yongguk, who’s smart, yongguk, who’s kind. yongguk, who doesn’t constantly scream and embarrass his parents, unlike a certain someone. everything she does is held to the same standards as him. her parents are constantly comparing bao to her best friend, and she hates it. she hates it because underneath, she knows it’s true – that he’s better than her at everything – and she doesn’t need a constant reminder. every turn, every small action she takes, it’s never enough, because somehow, yongguk would have done it better. of course, it’s irrational for her to think her parents loved her less than they loved him, but after a certain number of years, the small niggling of doubt blossomed into something bigger until it was something always there, just pushed back. it’s actually because of this that bao is so boisterous and always seeking attention – because she hopes that she’ll get the love she’s wanted for so long.
   ⤷ but anyways bao and yongguk were practically the same person all throughout high school and even before that, so when the time for university came, it was no surprise to anyone that they decided to attend the same one. their parents both supported it because it meant they would be there to look out for each other. so they set out, leaving their small village in china to brave the big streets of seoul, korea. and they did their first two years of uni, with everything going smoothly – although they moved countries, they were still the same, and they made friends easily. in fact, upon request of one of them, yongguk and bao, instead of journeying back home, decided it would be good to stay the summer on jeju island. so they packed up their bags once the term was over, and they were off.

   ⤷ [ YAN AN of PENTAGON ] the two of them met in university, and bonded instantaneously. most suspect it’s because of how much they have in common: after all, they are the same age and both hail from china, not to mention how their personalities just seem to click. their relationship is something akin to how bao prefers to treat only those closest to her ― which is to say, she enjoys making fun of him a lot, and like the good spirited person he is, yan an just takes it, knowing she means it all in good fun. they talk often, and besides yongguk, he’s her closest confidant. (often she can be found texting him, and their conversations usually consist of memes, because although she loves yongguk, he doesn’t understand the point of them, and she needs someone to bond with over them.)
   ⤷ [ KIM SEJEONG of IOI ] although bao is very content with her friends, she can’t stand the overdose of testosterone that comes along with being close to only guys, so sejeong is her best girl friend. the two of them met, like her and yan an, upon the start of university when they discovered they were roommates. sejeong is the person that bao turns to with things regarding emotions and “girly stuff” as yan an likes to call it, basically things that she feels awkward discussing with yongguk. they’re extremely close, to the point that yongguk even feels like they’re friends ― in fact, mostly due to bao's pushing, her, yongguk, yan an, and sejeong are essentially a very close friend group. sejeong was actually the one that suggested that they all go to jeju together for the summer, and after much convincing, the four of them set off to the small island. the only reason bao agreed so willingly to sejeong's request was because she told her that jeju is a place where you can enjoy yourself easily as well as find a job ― which bao was desperate for, hoping to make some extra cash on the side.

   ⤷ [ FLASHY ] so, let’s be honest. the moment you see BAO, it’s obvious that she’s practically the definition of ostentatious. she’s the type of person that if she really likes you when you first meet her, she’ll act like the two of you are the best friends -- the closest of close. she can be very in your face and it’s honestly a bit intimidating to, well, everyone, but once you get used to her, this quality becomes quite endearing. her reactions are always far too extra for what the situation calls for (eg. if you’re only a few minutes late to meet her for coffee or something, she’ll probably start spouting something about how if you don’t want to be friends with her, just tell her to her face.) however, most of her close friends are more than used to this particular aspect of her personality and respond with some sort of witty remark or insult (eg. yeah, you caught me. now that we’re not friends, i’ll just go get some coffee with my new best friend instead.)
   ⤷ [ LOUD ] this should go without saying, but along with being so extra, BAO is loud. like… extremely loud. she’ll often burst out in laughter and interrupt a lecture, or shout your name over a crowded room just to embarrass you, and she has a bit of a problem with yelling when she’s very excited or just heated over something. because of this, almost everyone on campus knows her as the loudmouth -- not that it’s a bad thing. not only has her reputation as loud and flashy spread, but also the fact that underneath all that, she’s truly just a genuinely kind person.
   ⤷ [ DIVA ] what do you expect from BAO, except for her to also be a complete diva? she gives off an aura of self confidence and assurance, which attracts many people who just want to be friends with that kind of person. additionally, she’s possibly the physical embodiment of sassiness. BAO is overflowing with a certain kind of wit and knows how to rebut any sort of comment with a cheeky comeback. she also knows how to make people laugh with a simple snap of her fingers. she prides herself on being a funny person, one that makes you want to become friends with her.
   ⤷ [ CARING ] however, despite all her saucy remarks, BAO knows just how important it is to be a kind person. she exudes comfort and is the type of person that makes everyone want to just… confess all their problems so they can get her advice. she’s a sort of counselor in that sense, except she’s not afraid to state facts as they are. BAO is a people person, and talking about other’s problems is something she enjoys, even if it is only to distract her from her own problems and flaws. as well as being able to help people, she also knows how fragile emotions are, and knows when exactly to tread lightly. she can be very sensitive to what people are feeling, and overall knows just how to make people feel better.
   ⤷ [ SELFLESS ] although this would seem like a redeeming trait, BAO is selfless in the worst way possible. sure, she puts her friends first and is willing to do anything for them, including helping them with whatever they need and being a comforting shoulder to cry on and just an ear when they need someone to listen, but she’s so selfless to the point that she doesn’t share her own problems with them. friendship is a two way street, but BAO doesn’t view it that way in most cases -- the only person who truly knows her deepest secrets is herself, and she doesn’t plan to change that anytime soon, even for her best friend since childhood, who knows there’s something up with BAO but doesn’t know what. the truth is, she’s so extra and always in the spotlight because (as horrible as it sounds) all she wants is to be noticed, and for people to see her and love her.
