  1. Monster Stats Nerfs and Buffs.
  2. The set of stats themselves:
  3.
  4. (Int)- intelligence, book smarts, general thinking
  5. (Wit)- wits, perception, quick thinking/improvisation
  6. (Res)- resolve, mental discipline, concentration, patience
  7. (Str)- strength, physical might
  8. (Dex)- dexterity, physical agility, coordination, reflexes
  9. (Sta)- stamina, physical resistance, toughness
  10. (Pre)- presence, raw charisma, leadership
  11. (Man)- manipulation, hide intentions, convince others
  12. (Com)- composure, control your emotions, resist manipulation
  13. (Mag)- magic, ability with complex magic i.e "sorcery”, “thaumaturgy”
  14.
  15. Above is a simplified stat system of 10 attributes which will be set relative to the average human range. Using this, monsters can be nerfed in a pretty balanced way that allows them to be used as PC characters. To keep power-creep from being an issue, the base stats are frozen to fit within the species range. Advancement is via magic and increasing skill levels.
  16.
  17. The proportion that limits mamono attributes in a way that allows balancing them with the human template is: 3 attributes at the stronger than human level, 4 attributes at the approximate to human level, and 3 attributes at the weaker than human level. In a vague but usefully numerical way we can think set the theoretical maximum for attributes in general at 20.
  18.
  19. Why do this? Well if applied consistently, it should allow a standard human to beat a standard mamono in 3 areas and have a roughly even chance in 4. This is before any skills are filled in for either mamono or human. Some numbers will be used as indicators of attribute level:
  20.
  21. Higher than human +/- 15
  22. Approximate to human +/- 10
  23. Lower than human +/- 5
  24.
  25. These aren't directly related to a numerical system but they are understandable benchmarks. The range variance is plus or minus two to reduce overlaps in the levels, this can be altered carefully to give similar results as desired.
  26.
  27. As a set of ranges the power levels look like:
  28.
  29. Higher than human (13 to 17)
  30. Approximate to human (8 to 12)
  31. Lower than human (3 to 7)
  32.
  33. See, notice how there is no overlap? This can allow the reduction of confusion later on, also this gives a small space to order beings in a similar category. A Dragon and Amazoness are both stronger than a human, but later we can use this system to give a rough estimate of which is stronger than the other. That will come later, however. First, we need a preliminary listing of our mamono.
  34.
  35. Before that, I'd like to talk about the nerf and buff system. The nerfs are 3 attributes per species that are greater than raw human ability, the buffs would be 3 below raw human ability. Where possible, I try and justify my choices using data from the MGE the format for a quote from the MGE is
  36. >"this is a quote from the MGE"
  37.
  38. I'll also be using logic and the criteria of having to fill the quota of 3 stronger/4 human range/3 weaker. KC was more concerned about...other things than game balance etc. When justifying my decisions in the face of a lack of data, I'll use this format:
  39. >This is me quoting myself
  40. >With that out of the way...
