  2. Since this is a rough translation, if you want to use any part of this for subbing/articles/gifs etc please contact me first at @ltluda on Twitter so I can quadruple check the part you want to use.
  3.
  4. And finally, a world-famous skater…. Shoma Uno, a 2nd year student at Chukyo University.
  5. Born and raised in Nagoya, he fell into skating when he was 5 years old.
  6. Shoma: my dream is to go to the Olympics and win a gold medal …
  7. Machiko Yamada, a prolific coach who has produced many famous athletes in the past, has helped him grow towards this dream.
  8. Ever since he was young, he’s been hot on the heels of other wonderful athletes.
  9. And now, after many years, he’s amassed a wonderful set of results, and is now ranked 2nd in the world behind Yuzuru Hanyu.
  10. Shoma: Even though I’ve come this far, there are still people that are above me. Whilst I respectfully acknowledge that they’re more skilled than me in various ways, I still want to win against them.
  11. [Opening competition for the season: Italy]
  12. In the practice session before the opening competition for his first Olympic season- rehearsing with a relaxed expression.
  13. Shoma: I really like competitions, and I really like the period of time leading up to competitions where you work your hardest, so I have lots of fun in the practices.
  14. And so, after a long wait, the curtain rises on a new season… he shows us some excellent skating, and furthermore…
  15. ….For the first time, he lands a quadruple jump in combination in the second half of his program.
  16. And then, in his first performance of the season, he earns a personal best [of 104.87].
  17. The hard work he put in before the start of this season has come to fruition.
  18. Shoma: I was crazy busy during the offseason, so this doesn’t even really feel like the first competition of the season.
  19. During the competition-less summer, Uno undertook a harsh training schedule much like what you would expect for during the season.
  20. [Former Ice Dancer Romain Haguenauer]: ”You must always keep your shoulders like this, as if you were riding a motorbike.”
  21. After the end of last season, the first thing he did was go back over basic skating skills [rules], and fix things up.
  22. He then took dance lessons to strengthen his expressiveness.
  23. Furthermore, he spent time on his jumps….
  24. Tormenting his body till the very end, and getting used to the painful sensation…
  25. [Person with camera]: “Good morning!”
  26. Shoma: “Mornin’.”
  27. Usually, he is a cheeky 19-year old teenager.
  28. [Person with camera]: “I can hear the music coming out of your headphones from here!”
  29. Shoma: “... Thank you very much for listening.”
  30. In Chicago he went out sightseeing, a rare occasion for him.
  31. At an observation deck, 103 floors about ground level [TN I think it’s the Sears tower?]…
  32. Shoma: “Isn’t it written there on that sign that you’re not allowed to jump here?”
  33. Standing on a glass floor 400m above the ground… he still manages to start jumping.
  34. [Friend]: “Aah, that’s freaking me out!”
  35. Wanting to jump around even in a place like this… he truly is a figure skater!
  36. Even when playing games, he still hates losing.
  37. Shoma: “Yay!”
  38. And for something that’s a bit different…
  39. Shoma: “I’m super bad at rhythm games. Like, honestly hopeless.”
  40. Whilst training abroad, Uno reaped the rewards of his hard work.
  41. Shoma: “I improved whilst in Chicago, and by the time I came home I was able to land it… the quadruple Salchow.”
  42. “Quadruple Salchow”
  43. New Years Day, two years ago: Whilst in Nagoya, his New Year’s Resolution was this:
  44. [[“If I can land a quadruple salchow, I’d like to jump quadruple salchows.”]]
  45. Shoma: “There are already lots of people who can land the [quad] Salchow, so I’d like to be able to do it as well since it’s now become a necessity.”
  46. In the recent past of the figure skating world, whilst the number of athletes landing two quads (including the quadruple salchow) increased, Uno only had the toeloop. Then, he became the first in the world to introduce the quad flip and next, the loop. However, he finished the end of the season without landing the comparatively easier quad salchow.
  47. At his first competition of this season, the day before the free skate: a sudden blackout at the practice rink. Whilst this was going on, he was able to successfully land the quadruple salchow. And now, going into the performance…
  48. First up, the opening jump… an element he introduced last season, the quadruple loop. Next, he attempts the quadruple salchow that he trained during his offseason for the first time… he shows us the result of his intense training.
  49. Shoma: ”I actually really didn’t think that there would be a day where I’d do [the 4S] in competition, and I also didn’t think there would be a day where I’d actually land it either. ”
  50. Furthermore, he managed to land his third [type of] quad, the quad flip, perfectly. He also managed to land a fourth type of quad, the quadruple toeloop, on two occations. In the end, he somehow managed to land 4 different quadruple jumps in five total occasions, surpassing Hanyu [in terms of number of types of quads landed]. He renewed his personal best score, which is currently the second highest personal best score in history. He again drew closer to the King [Hanyu].
  51. Shoma: “I think it was good to once again fortify my attitude towards competitions.”
  52. The impact of Uno’s achievements even made it to an Italian sports newspaper. “5 quads!” “Like a monster!” “A score that makes your head spin!”
  53. The Italian reporter who wrote this article has been covering figure skating for over 20 years. [can’t figure out name?]
  54. “I didn’t think you could have not only such a level of technical skill, but also such depth of expression, in your first competition of the season. There aren’t many competitors other young competitors at his age that I would consider in the running for an Olympic medal [like how I think he is]”
  55. Shoma: “I think I’ve developed a lot of confidence in myself in the sense that I can now recognise my own growth and development. This year I think I’d like to again break in to the top league of competitors.”
  56. And now, the competitions are underway leading up to the decisive competition between the world’s best- the Grand Prix Final- in his hometown of Nagoya (Aichi prefecture). But first, he has to cinch a certain place [at the competition].
  57. Shoma: “To those watching NagoyaTV: I am Shoma Uno. Since this year’s Grand Prix Final is in Nagoya, I will try my very best to represent our country there. Thank you so much for your support.”
