1080 Snowboarding BETA version from spaceworld 1997 as registered from 24th november 1997 : Summary of the event following the game : The developpement of 1080 started between April and may 1997 and ended in december 1997, the game had been on build since 9 months and was released in 28th febuary 1998 in japan, and no changes except the sound and the conversion of the game was made on NTSC US and EU PAL. The first time the game was presented is from the nintendo spaceworld 1997, more precisely the 24th november 1997 after a series of a multiples short gameplay takes, and be put on a video gathering all nintendo 64 games at this time. The footage has a duration of 17 seconds. A second video was found after the discovery made by a user named Zen64 which brought a cd footage of many games presented at the event. It included some footage such as ocarina of time from a company report made in 1998, the cancelled and very rare Earthbound 64 and of course, 1080 Snowboarding. This one has a duration of 34 seconds, aka the double of the first one. From both of those videos, the game was presented as the "BETA" version of 1080, and many difference was on the point between the time those videos was published and the release of the final game. Considered as the game has officially a time of 9 month of developpment, so between april and december, we can consider that the final game difference had been made in only one month, precisely in december. Also, a magazine from May 1998 provided by Clapham in Australia shows few screens of the game. Also confirmed that Crystal Lake was made after the two videos. Here is the main things to note from what we learn AND suppose on the videos which was different from the FINAL version : IN GENERAL : The characters and gameplay : - the two characters confirmed in existence are Kensuke Kimachi and Dion Blaster, probably the two only characters playable on the game, ricky winterborn was confirmed to be playable by IGN but no footage or image from the SP1997 demo has been found. - The board used are the same for both of them in terms of height, colors are different. - Kimachi used to be more older than Dion. - characters move their hands when they are on the air after a big jump. - the airtime of the jump seems more or less floaty depending on each courses than the FINAL version. General MAP/HUD/LAYOUT : - 3 courses were avalaible a this time : Crystal lake (long), crystal lake (short) and golden forest. Mountain village was confirmed to be in existence but wasn't finished at that time. (keep in mind that the two last one (dragon cave and deadly fall) was added in the last minute of the end of the devloppment). - The HUD and the layout were relatively more simple. the time of the course was on the top left of the screen ; at the bottom of it, there was a score line and the damage bar being in green going red if critical (meaning iF the match race exist, trick points was somewhere useful to do). the bottom left reside the number of try remaining of the course, containing a board attatched to a number on his left to see how many tries was remaining. - There is no speed count on the course at the beginning, so its possible than every characters used on the game was on the same speed. but the screen shows on the magasine that the speed count was included after the spaceworld 1997, which is in a blue color instead of yellow today. ABOUT THE MAP : Crystal lake (NO FOOTAGE) : - the first line seems to be much larger. - the cliff seems to be less higher than the final version. - the route before the shortcut house seems much larger. Crystal Peak (AKA crystal lake "long") : - Basically, the course seemed to be more faster on the BETA than the final version. - the sliding road, approximatevely at the first ten seconds of the course present on the final version, wasn't present on the BETA, after the second platform of the beginning, you are already in front of the tunnel section following the ice floor sliding route. - It's not impossible, but the chances are rare, that, at the middle end of the course, in the left side; instead of having a ice lake closed by a barrier, we have a shortcut leading to the right side of the course which will follow the end line of the course. Something which can explain that is after the moguls, we have a slight part of the map on the right but unused (leading to an OOB in the FINAL version) which is present on each versions. - in the final line of the course, we have a high "lamar' sponsor bar instead of the yellow building section with a big TV screen. - the sponsor bar have different sponsors. (PS : with all of that, i would estimate than the course would have a time casually around 1:10/1:15 if Z exist (Probably 1:14 in TAS but anyway)). Golden Forest : - No moguls at the start, the first line seems more sharper. - the first line seems longer than the FINAL version. - before the zigzag route, the platform seems less higher, no trees and the route more longer. - At the middle of the course, there is a little snow part before the snow wall. it seems the second one is a little less higher than the FINAL version. (PS : Estimate is probably 1:15 seconds if Z exist, maybe the same time as the final version). Mountain Village : - the beginning seems a little more large than the FINAL version. - The route after the jump following the cave exit platform (between the yellow floor and the black house) seems longer. - Nothing about the cave. (PS : well i can't estimate something here). About trick : - if a trick is made, a number of point will be gained just after it, no need to land smoothly like the FINAL version. - you can do a 360 rotation on your board even during sliding, which you can only do a 180 in the final version. - Trick point is included on the versus mode (match race?). In conclusion : Well it seems the game had a bunch of difference between the BETA and the FINAL version of 1080° Snowboarding, the wondering are several but here is my interrogations : - is there a beta version of dragon cave and deadly fall? - how was the 4 players version? - is any other characters are on the BETA of its definitively only Kimachi and Blaster? - Finally, is there a cart in existence for this game? Anyway, i will continue my search...sometimes :) Thanks for reading!
