the truththe first thing most people learn is how to cry out. its instinct, from the first pinch of the doctor’s fingers to delicate skin, to open our mouths and scream until our aches and pains are satisfied. words come later, after we recognize that the language of tears and shouts fades with the desperate touch of time.thelonius singh is not most people.the first thing he learns is that secrets live only in silence, and silence lasts only if a man loses his tongue or dies. what happens that fateful day when he is three years old is a story he will never tell you, or anyone. not even himself.his father comes home to his mother in another man’s arms. a fight ensues. the sound of shattering glass wakes a sleeping toddler. thelonius stumbles into his parent’s bedroom, drawn by the noise, and opens the door to find his father atop another man with lighter skin (he remembers it with such clarity later, that the man’s skin was the color of the paper in his coloring book). none of the adults notice the little boy until only two of them are breathing, and when they do, it is his father who kneels down in front of him and explains. thelonius saw nothing, heard nothing, and therefore will not say anything to anyone ever in his life. there is no story to tell, his father says, now put a smile on that face, boy. his mother says it too. put a smile on that face, my son. it is the duty of men to shed no tears, show no fear. the three year old learns to smile especially when he is hurting, to grin wide and bright when the ground beneath his feet begins to shake. he learns that his pristine white teeth are both shield and sword. people don’t ask questions when you’re smiling. they don’t care why you’re happy. they only concern themselves when you aren’t. the second thing he learns is that shadows can only be cast by light. it’s a fundamental dichotomy of the universe. people generally aren’t aware of things without their opposites yet often argue that most things in existence are not mutually exclusive. thelonius isn’t one who has that problem. at a young age, he understands that all things have opposites. every unstoppable force has its immovable object. the universe spreads toward falling totally apart. stars burn to live until they burn to die. so when he meets his neighbor, the boy in the mansion whose family shares a name with his, theo isn't surprised to find that he befriends russell singh immediately. they're six years old, five days apart, and as different as two people could be. russell floats through life on a cloud, swept up in the tailwinds of his parents' jet fueled careers. he needs and wants nothing. hard work isn't something that his life requires. he's fun and friendly, a guy pretty much everyone likes except also lazy. thelonius kind of loves that though, enjoys that he's the one who pushes russell to be a better guy, likes that he can give the five days younger boy a little fire in his pants. he also particularly enjoys ruining his life by convincing everyone that they're related.it's funny really, thelonius learns how to keep secrets from his parents, but he doesn't really learn how to tell stories until he meets his life long best friend. the third thing he learns, and this is by far his most profound observation, is that planning is overrated. inevitably, plans simply don't work out. people put so much effort into deciding what they're going to do, where they're going to go, who they're going to be with. when a truck crashes into their car going the wrong way on i-95 and suddenly all their little plans are shattered glass and torn asphalt they've got no idea what to do. thelonius discovers pretty early in life that plans are a waste of time. they never prepare you for what's actually going to happen. so, in high school when everyone else around him is planning prom dates and college applications and where they're going to put their division trophies in their snazzy uptown apartments, theo's in the gym with russell working out because it makes his heart go a little faster. when russell's parents (and his own, too) are asking where he plans on going to college if he plans on going at all, theo shrugs and flashes a grin and goes back to the eight-by-eight rubik's cube in his hands. he graduates high school without any ambition (something that surprises all of his teachers given his overall ability to consume information and endless curiosity) or any hope of something beyond dallas, texas. college is wherever a dart drops on the map. new york city isn't a plan. it's a happy little accident. a dual specialty in electrical and mechanical engineering isn't a choice, it's an origami paper game. applying to work for the new york city police department as a forensic specialist isn't really a decision as much as it is a whim, so when he fails the psych exam (he's too impulsive, they say) it's not really a disappointment. it does make him a little more keen on bothering the nypd a bit more, if only to see what they think a passing grade on their antiquated psychiatric examination is. at twenty-six, thelonius singh lives his life by simple principles. it keeps things from getting overly complicated. whatever feels good is what he does. whatever attracts his attention is what he chases. he almost never has a real destination in mind when he hits the road. he's a man who follows his feet and waits to see where he ends up. the fourth thing he learns, and well this is technically less learning and more overall result of a cumulative twenty-something years of being alive, is that destiny and chaos aren't as mutually exclusive as people like to think. after all, they have one fundamental trait in common.neither one of them is fair. loading relationship infoplatonicthelonius is a fun guy. he just has a rather particular taste in his fun. people mystify him, if only because he sees them in all their shattered glory and wonders why any of us work so hard to keep everything buried so deeply. ironic, i know, considering he's the guy who hides everything behind a smile. still, that's kind of his point. he's not really hiding as much as he's really hard to be affected by anything. the entire world is temporary to him, and he has a tendency to burn through things fairly quickly. it takes a lot to snag his interest and keep it, but as long as you're adding fuel to his fire, he'll continue to keep you warm. just don't ask him to be your puppy. he's not capable. he's only in relationships of any kind as long as he's getting something out of it. that whole hopeless devotion is russell's territory, and rest assured, he gives his best-friend-not-brother as much crap about that as possible. oh, he likes to think he's funny. whether or not that's actually true, well, i guess it depends on your sense of humor.familynot-actually-russell but russell singh. they aren't brothers, but he has half the world convinced they're related (for a time, this included russell himself). in truth, however, his parents are still living their unremarkable lives next to russell's parents' mansion in dallas. he probably hasn't spoken to them since he left the state. oops?romanticokay, romance and sex are literally so low on his priority list. like everything else about thelonius, the few relationships he's had weren't long lasting because he just gets bored with people so quickly. they're petty and predictable and just not ... fun to play with very long. pretty faces and thick wallets don't mean anything to him. he's drawn far more by the power and depth of mind, which makes it pretty hard for him to establish anything long-term. grand gestures are his thing though, so if you do manage to keep his attention, please understand that he'll send you flowers for no reason, pay for personal orchestras to soundtrack your picnics in the park, and by you tampons if you need them. the man has zero percent shame and less inhibition.misc.coworkers. nypd he gives the blues. (he loves to mess with them and overall give them grief.) other people he's managed to piss off. he's not exactly a dude who's easily affected by anything, but whatever you do manage to capture him with he's pretty extreme about. honestly, i just want to tell really terrible jokes and cause gentle chaos, okay? hmu. k(ae) player age: twenty-fourtime zone: gmt-6about me: Gru: What are you talking about?
