  40. A brilliant scientist left for dead returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.
  41. Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. In his quest for revenge, Peyton, aka the Darkman, is able to take on the appearance of anyone (using the synthetic skin,) but he only has 100 minutes per disguise.
  42. So this film is a fantastic practical effect film. What else would you expect from Sam raimi?. It definitely bridges the gap between evil dead and Spider-Man. It's great for what it is, a semi super hero flick with the love of vaudeville humor intertwined with disturbing effects that progress the story.
  43. There aren't enough fresh and interesting concepts. Not in Hollywood. That's why it's so great to see such a different, intriguing take on what we have seen before. There are obvious inspirations, and Raimi isn't covering them up. His style is clear in a lot of this, with the occasional silly moment and/or slapstick gag. There is a good deal of camp in this. The tone is mostly bleak. With that said, it is also entertaining, engaging and exciting. The twists are unexpected, and in general this manages to surprise the audience a lot. Neeson does marvelous, starring as Dr. Peyton Westlake, a scientist working tirelessly on perfecting synthetic skin. Drake, known from the television series LA Law, delivers a spot-on performance as the villain. The pace is fast without overwhelming, and the action is awesome and holds unforgettable moments. This has a magnificent sense of humor, very dark and twisted. The dialog holds plenty of quotable lines. This was made on a budget, and there are parts where you can tell, but Sam's enthusiasm for working in the medium hides and makes up for a lot of it. And don't get me wrong, the FX are quite well-done, and hold up pretty reasonably to this day. As other of his films, the visuals are astounding and effective, and he builds atmosphere well. He actually came up with the title character himself, as he couldn't get the rights to use The Shadow. The two followups are your average "churn out some sequels, we've got a cash cow here" situation, though they're not entirely bad. There is infrequent strong language, a bit of brutal violence and disturbing content. The DVD comes with a theatrical trailer as well as text about cast, crew and the production. A cool masked avenger tale. I recommend this to any fan of the director, and this type of movie. 8/10
  44. Darkman, as unnerving as a gargoyle, is a classic nightmare, elegant and sumptuous, everything "Batman" should have been. But we're numbed after a while, as we are by the grotesquerie of the nightly news. Then again, maybe that's Raimi's intention. His work is beautiful in its scary way, and never only skin deep.
  45. According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there). But if you want to believe that the guy was being an unfair jerk, you'll say Westlake was behind the line. a5c7b9f00b
