I don't think the iPad 3 will have a the rumoured resolution of 2048×1536, too many issues to look past before it looks piratical enough. a) processing power would be difficult to achieve to power the display and render the screen b) GFX rendering power for games to run at full resolution c) universal apps will need four versions of the same image (non-retina iPhone, retina-iPhone, non-retina iPad, retina-iPad d) pretty much every website would look blurry, and because desktop versions of websites are fine for the current iPad they won't be updated for retina iPads, it's not the same as re-designing for a retina iPhone d) If this device is hitting next month, Apple hasn't asked developers to prepare for a huge increase of resolution e) even if the battery is updated, a resolution that size with a GFX chip needed to power full-res games would drain it f) referring to point c, game/app sizes would be HUGE so the 16GB version would suffer the most.

I think the display will increase in quality, but not to the thrown around resolution of 2048×1536 - then cue disappointment and outrage from tech sites/commenters being pulled into believing their own un-sourced rumours.
