  1. I'd like to begin
  2. by asking a few questions.
  3. Who knows if they have a wireless
  4. smart meter on their home?
  5. Okay.
  6. And who has their smartphone
  7. in their pocket right now?
  8. Great.
  9. And who's read the fine prints
  10. in your owner's manual
  11. that says that the smartphone should never
  12. be within about an inch of the body?
  13. (Laughter)
  14. So today, I'm going to speak to
  15. why we can no longer assume
  16. that our wireless technology is safe.
  17. Technology has allowed us many benefits.
  18. It has connected us
  19. to people and to places,
  20. and it has brought us convenience
  21. that few could have imagined
  22. just 10 years ago.
  23. It's also brought us
  24. tremendous economic benefits.
  25. If we can look at how technology
  26. has increased in our lives
  27. in just the last eight years ...
  28. It started with the iPhone,
  29. and then tablet computing,
  30. ubiquitous Wi-Fi,
  31. the smart meter and the smart home,
  32. and wearable tech,
  33. and now the Internet of Things.
  34. If we could imagine how this would look,
  35. it would actually look like this:
  36. This is an artist's rendition of what
  37. Wi-Fi in our public spaces looks like.
  38. We could actually hear
  39. what microwave radiation sounds like
  40. with a device like this.
  41. So if anybody would like to hear
  42. what their smartphone
  43. or their smartwatch sounds like,
  44. come and see me at the end
  45. and I can show you.
  46. But how does this affect our bodies?
  47. That's the question I want to ask
  48. because this exponential rise
  49. in microwave radiation can have effects,
  50. and that's what scientists and medical
  51. doctors around the world are now saying,
  52. especially when it comes to children,
  53. because they're going to be
  54. affected by this their entire lives.
  55. But today, I also want
  56. to share a few solutions.
  57. I want to give everyone here
  58. things that you can do in your own lives
  59. in order to reduce this type of exposure.
  60. So I actually got into this topic
  61. about five years ago.
  62. Before then, I was a young
  63. technology enthusiast.
  64. I always used my smartphone and Wi-Fi.
  65. I've worked in Silicon Valley and have
  66. a master's degree in engineering.
  67. So if anyone had told me that wireless
  68. technology could have health effects,
  69. I would have thought they're crazy.
  70. So if you're thinking that
  71. right now, I can relate.
  72. But this all changed for me
  73. over the period of about one week.
  74. I started to experience headaches,
  75. ringing in the ears,
  76. insomnia,
  77. and a fatigue and brain fog
  78. that I'd never experienced before.
  79. And I shared this
  80. with a colleague at work,
  81. and she said the exact same thing
  82. happened to her husband
  83. when a wireless smart meter
  84. was installed in their home.
  85. So I went home that evening
  86. and I checked downstairs,
  87. and sure enough, we had
  88. a bank of wireless smart meters
  89. installed right below our bedroom
  90. in San Francisco.
  91. So this started me on a journey
  92. to learn as much about this topic
  93. as I possibly could.
  94. I now have a website about this,
  95. and I'm contacted by people
  96. all around the world, every day,
  97. who are experiencing
  98. the exact same things.
  99. It can be when they have
  100. a wireless smart meter installed,
  101. or a new Wi-Fi router,
  102. or even a cell tower placed
  103. across the street from their home.
  104. These are the common symptoms
  105. that people start to experience.
  106. This is actually from a published paper
  107. on the health effects
  108. of wireless smart meters.
  109. So, just here in the Bay Area,
  110. I'm in touch with dozens of people
  111. who've had their lives changed by this:
  112. medical doctors,
  113. high school principals,
  114. teachers and students,
  115. IT professionals,
  116. and even entrepreneurs.
  117. These are people who had a normal life,
  118. and then over a short period of time,
  119. went to where they could no longer work,
  120. where they could
  121. no longer go to an office.
  122. Some of them actually
  123. have had to move out of their homes
  124. because they can't be in an environment
  125. which is normal now for most people.
  126. I've been in touch with people
  127. around the world
  128. who've become homeless
  129. because of this.
  130. There are many people
  131. that's actually happened to.
  132. And, unfortunately, I know of people
  133. who've actually taken their lives
  134. because there's essentially
  135. no place they can go,
  136. and this is something
  137. that society does not yet recognize.
  138. My own life has been
  139. tremendously changed by this.
  140. After that first exposure
  141. to wireless smart meters,
  142. now I can no longer be in an environment
  143. with strong Wi-Fi for very long.
  144. So I can't go to my work
  145. the way I used to be able to.
  146. Most environments are now
  147. essentially toxic to me.
  148. So even finding a safe place to live
  149. has become very difficult.
  150. Imagine not being able
  151. to live in an apartment building
  152. where everyone has Wi-Fi,
  153. or to be able to live
  154. next to a cell tower.
  155. This is actually a proposed
  156. cell tower here in Berkeley.
  157. The residents have actually
  158. stopped it for now,
  159. but most churches and most schools
  160. now have cell towers on them.
  161. And so it exposes the people around them
  162. and of course the students
  163. who go to those schools.
  164. This is a cell tower in San Francisco:
  165. that brown thimble on top
  166. of the telephone pole is a cell tower.
  167. And these are being placed
  168. every couple of blocks.
  169. So you could have an amazing home,
  170. and then one week,
  171. a company can come and put
  172. a cell tower right outside your window.
  173. So this is something that's happening
  174. throughout the Bay Area,
  175. and it's going to be happening
  176. throughout the United States.
  177. So it makes it so that people like myself
  178. have a hard time finding a place to live,
  179. but it also is ratcheting up
  180. the exposure of the entire population.
  181. So you might be asking,
  182. perhaps some people
  183. are being injured by this,
  184. but if you're not feeling it,
  185. it's probably not that big of a deal.
  186. I think that's a very common experience.
  187. But it's not as simple as saying
  188. that just a few unfortunate people
  189. are being affected by this.
  190. Because what the science shows
  191. is that we're all affected on some level,
  192. whether we can feel it or not.
  193. And the reason is because essentially,
  194. our bodies are electric.
  195. Every cell in our body communicates
  196. using tiny electric signals.
  197. It's how our nervous system operates.
  198. So to think that we could
  199. put an exponential amount
  200. of microwave radiation
  201. into our environment
  202. and not feel effects, is simply false.
  203. To illustrate this, I actually
  204. had many friends come to me
  205. when I started to experience
  206. this, and they would say,
  207. "Jeromy, are you sure you aren't
  208. making this up in your head?"
  209. and I thought this too myself,
  210. at the beginning.
  211. But then, a year or two later,
  212. they would come to me and they'd say,
  213. "You won't believe it, but now I'm feeling
  214. pain in my arm when I use my cell phone,
  215. or when I put it to the head,
  216. or when a new Wi-Fi router is installed."
  217. So this is something where
  218. when people have more of an exposure,
  219. more people are being affected.
  220. And it's not just headaches and insomnia,
  221. it's much more serious things such as:
  222. infertility, DNA damage,
  223. and eventually cancer.
  224. This is what the research
  225. is starting to show.
  226. And you don't have to take my word for it.
  227. I encourage you to start
  228. researching this for yourselves.
  229. If you simply Google "EMF research,"
  230. this is a screenshot of what you'll find.
  231. The World Health Organization
  232. is the first link there,
  233. and they actually, in 2011,
  234. came out and said
  235. this wireless technology
  236. is possibly carcinogenic.
  237. Now there are scientists around the world
  238. that say it's most likely carcinogenic.
  239. The third link there
  240. is actually my own website.
  241. It's there because the last five years,
  242. I've gathered research
  243. from around the world
  244. that shows that we now
  245. have enough evidence
  246. to at least take precaution
  247. when it comes to this technology.
  248. So, isn't this regulated?
  249. And this is one of the most
  250. interesting things I've found:
  251. The Federal Communications Commission
  252. is who is supposed
  253. to be regulating wireless technology.
  254. But if you look at the regulations,
  255. they're almost 20 years old.
  256. So that means our most advanced technology
  257. is using science
  258. that's at least 20 years old.
  259. But not only that, they're based
  260. on a concept which is nearly 50 years old,
  261. which says if microwave
  262. radiation does not heat us,
  263. then it can't possibly hurt us.
  264. But there are now hundreds of studies
  265. that show that this is false.
  266. So how is it that we have
  267. a regulatory body
  268. that's not protecting the public?
  269. Well, like many public health
  270. issues in our country,
  271. you end up having industry
  272. influencing the regulatory body,
  273. and that's what's happening here.
  274. So you have a revolving door
  275. between the wireless lobby
  276. and the FCC Commission.
  277. So that's what's happening.
  278. Plus, the science is heavily
  279. influenced by industry funding.
  280. This is a study by Dr. Henry Lai.
  281. He looked at 326 studies
  282. based on the biological effects
  283. of cell phone radiation.
  284. He found that about half of the studies
  285. showed effects and half didn't.
  286. That's pretty normal for this type of research.
  287. But what he found that was interesting
  288. was that if you looked
  289. at who funded the studies,
  290. 70% of the independent
  291. studies showed effects,
  292. and only 32% of the industry-funded
  293. studies showed effects.
  294. So you see that there's an influence
  295. in money on this topic,
  296. just like many other topics.
  297. Tobacco is another one where essentially
  298. the industry funded science
  299. that was going to show
  300. their products were safe.
  301. So, that's the bad news.
  302. And now, I want to share some good news,
  303. and that is that
  304. there are solutions for this.
  305. We are going to have to have the industry
  306. start to create safer products,
  307. but there are ways that we can
  308. both protect ourselves
  309. and move industry forward.
  310. So one of the primary things we can do
  311. is to move towards fiber optics
  312. because this is a way
  313. that we can make our homes safer,
  314. our businesses and our schools.
  315. So fiber optics are safe, they're secure,
  316. and they're one of the fastest
  317. things we can use.
  318. Another way we can go is to design
  319. products which are safer.
  320. So currently we have product designers
  321. and engineers working together,
  322. but we could bring in biophysicists
  323. and biologists to work together
  324. to create products that don't just emit
  325. right underneath the FCC regulations,
  326. but emit the least amount of any type
  327. of electromagnetic fields as possible.
  328. If smart meters had been designed
  329. to use either fiber optics
  330. or to emit just once or twice a day
  331. rather than the 10,000 times they do emit,
  332. then I wouldn't be standing here today,
  333. and thousands upon thousands
  334. of people around the world
  335. would not have been
  336. injured by smart meters.
  337. So what are some things
  338. that all of us can do?
  339. This is one of the most important things
  340. because everyone wants to know
  341. how to essentially protect
  342. themselves and their families.
  343. So, the first thing is to make sure
  344. we use our cell phones wisely.
  345. I mentioned that you don't want
  346. to put the cell phone
  347. within about an inch of the body.
  348. The industry is telling us this now.
  349. So make sure you use speakerphone,
  350. get an air-tube headset;
  351. and when it's on the body,
  352. make sure that you put it
  353. on airplane mode
  354. when it's either in the pocket
  355. or sometimes in the bra.
  356. And when it comes to kids, we don't want
  357. to have kids use cell phones.
  358. But if they must, then please,
  359. teach them how use these wisely.
  360. We can wire our homes.
  361. Most people don't need
  362. Wi-Fi in their home.
  363. So move towards Ethernets,
  364. move towards fiber optics.
  365. And if you must have Wi-Fi,
  366. make sure you turn it off at night.
  367. You can get a simple timer
  368. so you don't even have to think about it.
  369. When it comes to kids,
  370. we want to reduce their exposures
  371. as much as possible.
  372. So if they use an iPad,
  373. put all of the data on the iPad,
  374. and then turn the Wi-Fi off.
  375. In schools,
  376. I simply do not think we need
  377. to have Wi-Fi in schools
  378. because we're filling those classroom
  379. with microwave radiation.
  380. We can have amazing technology,
  381. but it can be wired.
  382. And this is where I think
  383. we're going to have to go.
  384. When it comes to the smart meter
  385. and the smart home,
  386. I recommend you to opt out.
  387. I've had wealthy early-adopting
  388. families contact me
  389. who went all in on the smart home,
  390. and they ended up getting sick
  391. within a few months.
  392. So this is something
  393. that affects families,
  394. and I just recommend
  395. that you don't go down this path
  396. because it's a technology we do not need.
  397. And one of the last solutions
  398. I want to get today
  399. is to create a safe place to sleep.
  400. Because this is one
  401. of the most important things.
  402. Because this is
  403. when your body rejuvenates,
  404. and it's when you can make sure
  405. that everything's off.
  406. So turn off all your wireless
  407. devices, unplug things.
  408. If you have a baby monitor,
  409. I actually recommend that you turn
  410. that off, especially at night.
  411. I just do not recommend those for kids.
  412. And if you do these things,
  413. I know many people
  414. who've ended up sleeping better;
  415. they are much clearer during the day,
  416. and their fatigue is much less.
  417. So this is something I recommend
  418. everyone can do.
  419. So in conclusion,
  420. I want to say that this
  421. is a problem that we can solve.
  422. There are tremendous people
  423. around the world
  424. working on this right now.
  425. And I believe we're coming
  426. to a tipping point
  427. where enough people realize
  428. that this is an important topic,
  429. and that there are solutions.
  430. So I recommend that you share this
  431. with the people who are closest to you.
  432. Because if enough people
  433. wake up to this issue,
  434. then industry will start
  435. creating safe technology.
  436. And once they do that,
  437. our entire society can move
  438. towards a healthier future.
  439. Thank you.
  440. (Applause)
