  1. Halemauu trail after going to the top of Haleakala at sunrise. You only have to go about 1.5-2 miles in for an incredible view that reminded me of The Great Valley from Land Before Time.
  2. Another gem on Maui is the Kaupo gap. You home up the backside of Haleakala from the east side of the island into the crater. It's a butt kicker of a hike (12000 feet of elevation change in 6 miles) but its such a unique and interesting way to see all the different and varied climes the island has to offer.
  3.
  4. Road to Hanna, Kapalua Bay (IMO best beach in the world), Kaanapalli Beach. For restaurants - Merriman's, Aloha Mixed Plate, Mamma's Fish House, and Leilani's - best fish tacos on the island; PM me if you need more info
  5.
  6.
  7.
  8. DO NOT go past the last town (Kaupo).
  9. Both parts of Haleakala, io valley, etc. when in Paia, stop in Mana Foods to pick up fresh fruit and snacks.
  10. Star Noodle restaurant (http://www.yelp.com/biz/star-noodle-lahaina) is quite good.
  11. Maui: Disagree on Road to Hana being overrated -- this seems to be a love it / hate it thing (I love it). Also, the rental car companies say to *come back* on the same road to return, and sometimes tell you explicitly that you can't drive around the south west side of the island. If you're willing to risk it, that side of the island is beautiful.
  12. EDIT: Also, tip: avoid driving on Highway 340. There are a non-trivial number of one-lane roads on the side of mountains and if you are heading downhill you have to back up sometimes steep parts of such roads to get out the way of people driving uphill. It's quite stressful
  13. Our favorite food (we make a point to eat there / grab food from there a few times each time we go): the fish tacos from http://coconutsfishcafe.com/. The road to Hana is overrated (but beautiful) -- have breakfast in Paia, drive all the way to http://www.mauigardenofeden.com/ and then turn around.
  14. hike diamondhead
  15. Da Kitchen Cafe in Maui is super famous for their deep fried spam musubi. I've search all over Hawaii (on the 4 islands) for an equivalent and I haven't found one. They're so good that they have pop-up shops during the summer on other islands and their photos are shared so many times on social media.
  16. Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice in Maui is solid.
  17. Ululani, Mama's, Koiso Sushi, and Ka'ana Kitchen on Maui

  23. Maui
  24. • The Old Lahaina Luau. Cheesy but fun. Buy tix in advance, it sells out.
  25. • Snorkel at Honolua Bay. You can't wear sunscreen there, but it's where I saw the best fish. You need to swim a ways out from the shore to see them; bring fins.
  26. • Have shaved ice at Ululani's Shave Ice as many times as possible. Get the snow cap and ice cream inside. Send me photos and make me jealous.
  27. • Eat at Star Noodle. Do it early in your trip, because you're going to go back.
  28. • Have brunch at The Gazebo Restaurant @ Outrigger Napili Shores. Make friends with older lady/owner. She's hilarious.
  29. • Chill out in Napili bay and get some rays.
  30. • I'm 50/50 on Haleakala crater at sunrise. It's a 5-hour excursion from Old Lahaina (2+ hours drive each way, in the dark, with no guarantee). When I tried, we saw grey clouds turn yellow, and it was cold as crap. For those who have witnessed actual sunrises, they have said it's outstanding. Your call.
  31.
  32. Seven Pools at Ohe'o and Ohe'o Gulch on the drive to Hana.
  33. I agree, definitely go to Ohe'o gulch, and hike through the bamboo forest to the waterfall. The road to Hana is a long day trip, but worth it. The Garden of Eden was fun. Make reservations to get dinner at Mama's Fish House!
  34.
  35. On the road to Hana, take the detour to the Keanae Peninsula, it's beautiful. We also did a helicopter tour through Blue Hawaiian - it was fantastic and we got to see some whales too!
  36.
  37. Wait, one more - make sure you eat at Cafe O'Lei. We learned about it in the book and it was one of our favorite lunches in Kihei. Chicken lettuce wraps and mac nut crusted chicken sandwich!
  38.
  39. We did the drive to Hana a couple of years ago and stopped at more places than we planned. By the time we got to the Seven Pools, it was starting to get late... we decided to continue the drive around the bottom of the island and back up to Lahaina (even though it was dirt road and the car rental agreement said this was a big no). To say the least, it was some of the most beautiful scenery we had seen and some of the scariest roads I've ever driven on! Made it back safe, but if I were to do it again, I would've found a place to stay in Hana for the night...
  40.
  41.
  42. I had the best Thai food of my life from this little truck at the end of the Road to Hana called My Thai. Tin Roof Maui had hands down the best poke and is close to the airport.
  43.
  44.
  45. Activities (by order of how much I liked the experience)
  46. 1. Snorkeling in Molokini. Must go when you’re in Maui! We went with redline rafting company and they are great! They provided breakfast, lunch, wetsuits, and snorkeling masks. They even had prescription mask for my husband who would be blind without his glasses. The group size is 24 or less so you don’t have to deal with a large group.
  47. 2. Luau. We went to Old Lahaina Luau. I strongly recommended that you book as soon as you can and call them to pick a seat. The traditional seating gets you closer to the stage.
  48. 3. Road to Hana tour. This is an all-day activity, ours was from 7-7 so make sure you’re willing to dedicate a whole day to this when you commit. The banana bread stand (Aunty Sandy’s) is wonderful and a must stop. We stopped by the Maui winery towards the end of the tour to try some nice pineapple sparkling wine. I strongly recommend doing this with a tour group so you can enjoy the scenery on the way and don’t have to worry abt driving for a whole day. Another bonus of going with a tour company is that visitors and not allowed during the last bit of the drive so having to drive the same way back would be kind of boring compared to being able to do a full loop. We went with Mahalo tour group and they had these Mercedes sprinter vans that were comfortable and spacious.
  49. Now onto the food!!!
  50. 1. Maui Chef’s table - monthly tasting menu with chefs from the Mill House and local ingredients
  51. 2. Mama’s fish house -best oysters I have ever had
  52. 3. Miso Phat- loved the TNA roll there
  53. 4. 808 grindz cafe - really good Hawaiian breakfast and really cheap based on Maui standards. We had to wait over an hour when we got there at 9am so do takeout and go to a nearby beach park for a picnic
  54. 5. Tamura liquor store - apparently all the locals go to the poke stand inside this liquor store for truly fresh ahi tuna poke, my favorite is the ahi sunrise
  55. 6. Star noodle - solid 4 stars
  56.
  57.
  58. George Xourafas Rebecca - my wife was born and raised on Maui, and I consider it my home. Some of the above recommendations are great, but I prefer going off the beaten path. Here's a list of places to eat, first:
  59. Flatbread Pizza Co. in Pa'ia. Arrive early and plan to wait...but it is very worthwhile. My father-in-law provides the kiawe wood and charcoal used to fire their pizza ovens.
  60. Sam Sato's Noodle House. You'll think it is sketchy, but it is local and authentic. Best dry mein you'll have anywhere on the island.
  61. Ko restaurant at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea. The best plantation cuisine on-island.
  62. - Ululani's Shaved Ice (multiple locations) but Lahaina is best.
  63. - Take the drive to Hana, but go early in the morning (really early) and spend the day enjoying the sights. The drive is the spectacle.
  64. - Visit Kahakuloa. Treacherous one-lane roads give way to beautiful seascapes and a variety of waterfalls. Stop in to Julia's Banana Bread Stand for a snack and play kickball with her kid. Tell her Haole Santa sent you (I ride around the island on a black Vespa, dressed as Santa Claus every year).
  65. Oh, you must go to Donut Dynamite. This should be high up on must do, http://instagram.com/donutdynamite to follow their menu and see how awesome it is. They sell out pretty early (lots of stuff gone by 10AM usually), but take advantage of the time difference :)
  66.
  67. Lacie Wirth I was born and raised on Maui so have lots of recommendations
  68.
  69. Boats-For snorkeling, skip Molokini. The reef out there is in pretty bad shape. I like snorkeling off of Black Rock or taking a boat to a few spots around Maui like Turtle Town. All providers are more or less the same, so pick the one that is going to places that sound interesting. Or if you or your partner are prone to sea sickness, go for one on a larger boat. Taking a boat to the beach on Lanai is also fun and you normally see dolphins along the way. You'll be there during whale season so I highly recommend an early morning whale watch. I always go with Pacific Whale Foundation.
  70.
  71. Haleakala- No need to go on a tour. Just drive up on your own for sunrise. You now have to make a booking for sunrise so be sure to do so in advance. If you're a big hiker, it's fun to hike up around there too. Stop at Kula Bistro afterwards for white chocolate macadamia nut pancakes.
  72.
  73. Naupaka Beach/Black Sand Beach
  74.
  75. - go all the way up to Haleakala. Do a hike down the crater, just make sure you save some energy as you start going down :)
  76. - Do the road to Hana, but go all the way around. You will hear that the southeast side road is not good. Just ignore it. I did it on a regular car and it was super easy. Stop at the Seven Pools. Of course avoid doing it on a rainy day.
  77.
  78. Hawaiian Cookie Company (buy out the store), load up on Dole Whip, and go buy several containers of Furikake mix, which you can only get at Costco’s in Hawaii.
  79.
  80. -Sunrise Haleakala Volcano
  81. -Road to Hana / bamboo Forest
  82. -Ohai Trail - coastal views from Northwest Maui
  83. -Nakalele blowhole & heart shaped rock
  84. -Old Lahaina Luau - need reservations well in advanced
