- Roswell Fastow is a kid born and raised for much of his early life in Goldenrod City where his father, Andrik, worked as a Magnet Train worker and a his mother took care of him. During his youth, he enjoyed exploring places he shouldn't be such as abandoned buildings and the underground along with spending time in the Flower Shop. There, he learned how to take care of plants and how to grow berry trees.
- However, due to how much the family was struggling to pay their rent and how deep they were in debt, Roswell's father eventually quit his job working on the railroad's construction and started working a new job "overseas" as Roswell and his mother moved back into their old home in Azalea Town.
- What he didn't know is that he was working in Team Rocket around the Indigo League as a Rocket Grunt. However, the money was very lucrative and Roswell ended up growing rather comfortably. Using his allowance, he decides to continue his hobby of gardening and berry-growing. However, after Silph Company's hostile takeover, the money stopped coming in. His father came home a month later, much more distant and jaded than he was before he left. The connection Roswell and Andrik has all been severed by years of separation and dark secrets.
- With appropriate work being scarce around Azalea Town, Andrik returned to working at the Magnet Train station for the next three years while Roswell sold Oran Berries to aspiring trainers as a way to make a decent amount of money. One night, Roswell awoke to light footsteps outside of the small garden. When he left, however, they were already gone but a seed had been planted with his patch of dirt.
- Over the next few weeks, a strange weed has started to grow underneath the Oran Berry tree he somewhat relies upon. He has a rather unusual idea, however, and decides to see what kind of plant grows from it. The plant then grew to become an Oddish with glossy leaves from how well-grown Roswell took care of it. Although initially wanting to wander, it always came back to Roswell's grove where it was fed mulch and kept groomed.
- Three years have passed since Roswell's father came home and, finally seeing his son capable of taking care of himself, Andrik decides to urge Roswell to go on his journey like his peers. Although initially hesitant, he does not really have a choice. One morning, Andrik points Roswell towards Union Cave and tells him to retrieve the family heirloom that was lost some time ago. Roswell, not having set foot out of town since his father moved back into town, hesitantly obeys his father's wishes. With their only child gone for the moment, Andrik and his wife don their Rocket uniforms to join their allies in taking over Azalea Town.
- After some exhausting battles and a couple hours wandering throughout the cave, Roswell catches his eyes on the Fastow heirloom: an old but well-crafted shamisen. He slips it into his bag before heading back to Azalea Town, now overrun by Rocket Grunts. Wanting to scare off their son, the disguised parents confront him on the outskirts of town and threatening him to turn back now before things get ugly. Roswell, not knowing his own parents are threatening his own life, turns tail and heads back through Union Cave and north to Violet Town.
- The fresh-faced trainer catches wind that the Rocket grunts are gone and heads back only to find his parents completely gone. Frustrated and confused, he has no choice but to start that Pokemon adventure. It doesn't take him long to find the silver lining in this whole thing. A natural wanderer, he takes up his journey with the Oddish he grew with his green thumbs. Not only does Roswell want to see the world, he wants to find where ever his parents went.
