  1. Beverly stops at a table in front of a shop selling
  2. exotic materials. The modest selections of cloth are
  3. lined up on the table, some draped for best effect.
  4. Beverly looks over them critically, feeling weight and
  5. texture. The Bandi SHOPKEEPER has stayed at the rear
  6. of the booth.
  7.
  8. BEVERLY
  9. "Useful"? How and what,
  10. Commander?
  11.
  12. RIKER
  13. Investigating some things I've
  14. noticed here, Doctor. The last
  15. was a piece of fruit...
  16.
  17. Beverly has frowned over a particularly pretty piece
  18. of material which she holds up for the shopkeeper to
  19. see.
  20.
  21. BEVERLY
  22. Would this be available in emerald
  23. green?
  24.
  25. The Bandi Merchant smiles, nods and takes the bolt of
  26. cloth INTO A SMALL CLOSED OFF AREA BEHIND. Wes watches
  27. the merchant go as Beverly turns to look at Riker
  28. appraisingly.
  29.
  30. BEVERLY
  31. (continuing)
  32. I'm sure, Commander, there are
  33. reasons for a first officer to
  34. want to demonstrate his energy
  35. and alertness to a new captain.
  36. But since my duty and interests
  37. are outside the command
  38. structure...
  39.
  40. The Bandi Merchant comes quickly with the bolt of cloth
  41. -- now emerald green -- interrupts Beverly by holding
  42. it up for her approval.
  43.
  44. RIKER
  45. Isn't it nice he happened to have
  46. the right color?
  47.
  48. Beverly glances sharply at Riker, suppressing a somewhat
  49. chagrined look.
  50.
  51. 74 CONTINUED: (2)
  52.
  53. BEVERLY
  54. (to Merchant)
  55. Thank you. I'll take the entire
  56. bolt. Charge it to Beverly
  57. Crusher, Chief Medical Officer,
  58. USS Enterprise.
  59.
  60. The Merchant nods, ticks the information off on a flat
  61. little gadget that dangles from his belt, hands her the
  62. bolt of cloth.
  63.
  64. 75 ANOTHER ANGLE - DOLLYING WITH BEVERLY, RIKER, WESLEY
  65.
  66. as they walk away, Riker enjoying the look that's come
  67. onto her face over this incident.
  68.
  69. RIKER
  70. Let's see, where were we?
  71.
  72. BEVERLY
  73. I was accusing you of inventing
  74. work in order to curry favor with
  75. your new captain. I apologize.
  76.
  77. WESLEY
  78. Finding the exact right color took
  79. him only about twelve seconds,
  80. Mom.
  81.
  82. They stop a little distance off and look back toward
  83. the shop.
  84.
  85. BEVERLY
  86. Maybe this is something Jean-Luc
  87. Picard will want looked into.
  88.
  89. RIKER
  90. Jean-Luc? You know Captain
  91. Picard?
  92.
  93. WESLEY
  94. (proudly)
  95. When I was little, he brought my
  96. father's body home to us.
  97.
  98. Riker is startled but Beverly only smiles, fondly pats
  99. her son's head.
  100.
  101. 75 CONTINUED:
  102.
  103. BEVERLY
  104. Yes, Wes, long, long ago.
  105. (to Riker)
  106. Shall we continue the walk? I'd
  107. like to know you better, Mister
  108. Riker.
  109.
  110. CUT TO:
  111.
  112. 76 INT. FARPOINT LOUNGE - DAY - ON GEORDI AND MARKHAM
  113.
  114. LT. GEORDI LaFORGE and ENSIGN SAWYER MARKHAM are in the
  115. small, comfortable lounge area. Markham is a likeable
  116. young man, enthusiastic, energetic. He is still
  117. inclined to shoot from the hip rather than consider
  118. before speaking, but he is a capable (and very new)
  119. graduate of the Academy. We SEE Geordi at first only
  120. from behind, and we may routinely register the fact he
  121. is black.
  122.
  123. MARKHAM
  124. Where is she? They say she's
  125. never late -- not since the old
  126. burrhog took over the captain's
  127. chair.
  128.
  129. RIKER'S VOICE
  130. You wouldn't be talking about the
  131. Enterprise, would you, Ensign
  132. Markham?
  133.
  134. 77 WIDER ANGLE
  135.
  136. The two young men turn around sharply to find Riker has
  137. come up behind them. The most important thing we notice
  138. about Geordi is that he wears a strange flattish device
  139. (like futuristic goggles) over his eyes. Although he
  140. is technically blind, his head always turns toward the
  141. person speaking to him because he can, in fact, see as
  142. well or better than anyone through the use of the visual
  143. prosthesis. As they realize that Riker is a senior
  144. officer, both young men straighten to attention.
  145.
  146. GEORDI/MARKHAM
  147. Sir. Yes, sir.
  148.
  149. Riker smiles at the ingrained and traditional response
  150. of the recent Academy graduate.
  151.
  152. RIKER
  153. You can stand at ease, gentlemen.
  154. We're not on the Enterprise yet.
  155.
  156. 77 CONTINUED:
  157.
  158. MARKHAM
  159. You know we're assigned to her,
  160. sir.
  161.
  162. RIKER
  163. (extending his hand)
  164. Riker. I'm slated to be First
  165. Officer.
  166. (they shake hands)
  167. I read the service records on all
  168. new personnel on the trip out.
  169. Excellent academic record at
  170. Starfleet Academy, Mister Markham.
  171.
  172. MARKHAM
  173. Thank you, sir.
  174.
  175. RIKER
  176. And you, Mister LaForge. Captain
  177. Dreyer praised your performance
  178. on the Hood. Why did you request
  179. transfer to the Enterprise?
  180.
  181. GEORDI
  182. Who wouldn't, sir? The biggest,
  183. newest, fastest starship in the
  184. fleet --
  185.
  186. RIKER
  187. Commanded by the best burrhog in
  188. the fleet. Right, Mister Markham?
  189.
  190. MARKHAM
  191. (sheepishly)
  192. Yes, sir.
  193.
  194. RIKER
  195. (grins)
  196. I've already forgotten who used
  197. those words.
  198.
  199. GEORDI
  200. Shouldn't we have heard something
  201. from her by now, sir?
  202.
  203. A BANDI WOMAN approaches:
  204.
  205. BANDI WOMAN
  206. Commander Riker?
  207.
  208. RIKER
  209. Yes?
  210.
  211. 77 CONTINUED: (2)
  212.
  213. BANDI WOMAN
  214. The Enterprise has been picked
  215. up on our monitors, sir. I should
  216. tell you, sir, it is only the
  217. Stardrive Section.
  218.
  219. All three crewman are surprised to hear this.
  220.
  221. RIKER
  222. (to Woman)
  223. What about the Saucer Module?
  224.
  225. BANDI WOMAN
  226. We've received no explanation,
  227. sir. But the captain signals that
  228. you're to beam up immediately.
  229.
  230. GEORDI
  231. (to Markham)
  232. Our new captain doesn't waste
  233. time.
  234.
  235. RIKER
  236. A good rule for all of us to
  237. follow, gentlemen.
  238.
  239. Riker touches his communicator. His VOICE now 'treated'
  240. to indicate he is transmitting. (This will be standard
  241. communicator format.)
  242.
  243. RIKER
  244. (continuing)
  245. Enterprise, this is Commander
  246. Riker on Farpoint. Standing by
  247. to beam up.
  248.
  249. TRANSPORTER EFFECT (OPTICAL)
  250.
  251. FADE OUT.
  252.
  253. PART FOUR
  254.
  255. FADE IN:
  256.
  257. 78 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL)
  258.
  259. The Enterprise stardrive module in orbit of the Farpoint
  260. planet.
  261.
  262. 0 INT. STARDRIVE TRANSPORTER ROOM - ANGLE ON PLATFORM (OPTICCAL)
  263.
  264. As Riker BEAMS IN. Lieutenant Tasha Yar of Security
  265. is there, waiting until Riker is fully materialized,
  266. then:
  267.
  268. TASHA
  269. Lieutenant Yar of Security, sir.
  270. Captain Picard will see you on
  271. the Battle Bridge.
  272.
  273. Riker was prepared to shake hands but Tasha is already
  274. leading the way toward the turbolift.
  275.
  276. 80 INT. TURBOLIFT
  277.
  278. As Riker follows her inside, she speaks quietly toward
  279. the controls:
  280.
  281. TASHA
  282. Battle bridge.
  283.
  284. The doors snap closed and the lift moves. Riker looks
  285. Tasha over, waiting, then:
  286.
  287. RIKER
  288. With the saucer gone, can I assume
  289. something interesting happened
  290. on your way here?
  291.
  292. TASHA
  293. I'll let the captain explain, sir.
  294.
  295. 81 INT. BATTLE BRIDGE - ANGLE ON PICARD
  296.
  297. He is seated in the command chair with Data and
  298. a couple of other crewpersons at their stations.
  299.
  300. DATA
  301. We are cleared into the standard
  302. parking orbit, sir.
  303.
  304. 81 CONTINUED:
  305.
  306. PICARD
  307. (nods)
  308. Make it so.
  309.
  310. The bridge turbolift doors open, Riker ENTERS the bridge
  311. after Tasha, follows her to Picard.
  312.
  313. TASHA
  314. Commander Riker, sir.
  315.
  316. RIKER
  317. Riker, W.T., reporting as ordered,
  318. sir.
  319.
  320. Picard takes his time, looking Riker over and then
  321. offering his hand.
  322.
  323. PICARD
  324. I really didn't expect to welcome
  325. you to half a starship, Riker.
  326. (to Tasha)
  327. Is the viewer ready?
  328.
  329. TASHA
  330. All set up, sir.
  331.
  332. PICARD
  333. (to Riker)
  334. We'll first bring you up to date
  335. on a little... "adventure" we had
  336. on our way here, Commander. Then
  337. we'll talk.
  338.
  339. TASHA
  340. (to Riker)
  341. This way, sir.
