- [18:05:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: cuz it's corresponds to it's number of stories
- [18:05:19] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: being 101 including basement
- [18:05:44] +Koakuma: It may look crowded but man living there must be great.
- [18:05:53] 96k ☾: Get out, Lio.
- [18:06:00] 96k ☾: MRA needs to shine.
- [18:06:10] london13: let's not be rude
- [18:06:16] Lionyx: don't interrupt a lecture with memes...
- [18:06:19] london13: he did say any questions?
- [18:06:33] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: there's pros and cons living in an Asian super-metropolis koa especially when you come from a nation where the population density you grew up with is somewhat low
- [18:06:56] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: but it is worth it! :)
- [18:07:11] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: especially if you have a dream of starting a business in one of these cities
- [18:07:32] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: business in Taipei, Hong Kong and especially Seoul are basically guaranteed for you to profit.
- [18:08:11] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the leisure activity here is baseball
- [18:08:21] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Taiwan has it's own league called the CPBL or chiense professional baseball league

- [18:08:32] *Kid A: That's not a valid URL.
- [18:08:35] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: ugh
- [18:08:56] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: anyway in that link it's just their logo.
- [18:09:13] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: not as nearly as competitive as America's MLB teams thou, they only have 4 in comparison to 30 in MLB.
- [18:09:31] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: And that concludes general culture!
- [18:09:58] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Now on Economy of the nation!
- [18:10:09] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the currency is the Taiwan dollar also known as $NT
- [18:10:20] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: a single USD purchases 29.26NT or roughly 30 of these.
- [18:10:40] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Main export is tourism and foods.
- [18:10:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Both contribute significantly to the total export of the nation.
- [18:11:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: in 2011 Taipei ranked 37th out of all cities visited in terms of tourism competitiveness.
- [18:12:23] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Taipei shares similar traits regarding economic productivity with the other 3 dragons, all 4 dragons' GDP are significantly contributed via tourism
- [18:12:59] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: although what exactly the tourist attraction is and what created such market each nation has it's own unique trait.
- [18:13:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: as for Taiwan, hot springs are a big attraction for tourists.

- [18:13:45] +cc: I can imagine
- [18:13:52] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: this is one of the hot spring resorts
- [18:13:57] +cc: I would still wanna be in a hotspring one day
- [18:14:03] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: it is very relaxing i promise you cc!
- [18:14:09] +Koakuma: Jeez that looks amazing wtf
- [18:14:11] +cc: they probably have them here too, but no natural ones
- [18:14:12] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: for those who don't know what a hot spring is
- [18:14:40] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: It's relaxing spa pool that people go to to warm up their bodies and improve their skin quality.
- [18:14:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: very affordable to compared to some other spa treatments.
- [18:15:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: demand for these services are peak during winter but surprisingly even hot summer days people do visit it.
- [18:16:06] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: You can find hot springs in places where it is near a volcanic region
- [18:16:28] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: be careful not to ingest any water thou! there's sulphur content in em
- [18:16:38] sejesensei: God, that looks great to soak in
- [18:17:11] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: it is!
- [18:17:24] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the hot spring market is actually very competitive
- [18:17:33] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: almost every hotel will guarantee to have some variant.

- [18:18:39] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: these are artificially created thou
- [18:18:49] Lionyx: looks like an ice vs fire scene
- [18:18:57] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: that's right, not all springs are warm
- [18:19:06] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: some are burning hot while some are ice cold
- [18:19:28] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: each serve a purpose, can boost the metabolism and regulate blood levels if done enough.
- [18:19:46] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: As for some other exports
- [18:19:54] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Taiwanese also has a very respectable market regarding technology.
- [18:20:12] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: 10.8% of Taiwan's GDP are from computer technology
- [18:20:16] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: as well as household appliances.
- [18:20:35] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: hey a question for you all, who owns an Acer computer/laptop/device?
- [18:20:52] Lionyx: my sister
- [18:20:55] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: ahh
- [18:20:58] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Acer is actually from taiwan
- [18:21:04] @Brandon~: i have an acer
- [18:21:17] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: i might one day get one after my computer dies down.
- [18:21:44] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: as for some other economic background on Taiwan, let's look at the big mac index
- [18:21:58] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: what this statistic shows is it provides an informal way to measure the 'purchasing power parity' between two currencies.
- [18:22:31] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: economists use a big mac as a frame of reference to represent just what is the average cost of goods and services within a nation
- [18:22:42] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the price of a big mac here is about $2.55USD
- [18:22:49] Lionyx: are you talking about the mcd burger?
- [18:22:52] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: yeah
- [18:23:17] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: which is surprisingly cheap compared to some European nations. Afaik Norway costs 3x as much.
- [18:23:47] umbreon1108: yea, here it costa round $6
- [18:23:51] umbreon1108: *costs
- [18:23:57] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: okie that will conclude the economic background!
- [18:24:01] Lionyx: maybe does it also depend on the average income
- [18:24:01] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: feel free to ask questions!
- [18:24:03] sejesensei: Im pretty sure its more than 3x in norway
- [18:24:17] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: o.o
- [18:24:40] Lionyx: how much does the average taiwanese earn?
- [18:24:44] Lionyx: per month
- [18:25:03] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: umm
- [18:25:11] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: i don't have an exact statistic because the standard deviation is very great
- [18:25:20] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: but afaik the minimum wage is 21k NT
- [18:25:32] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: which translates to umm... hold on i'm getting a calculator :P
- [18:26:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: 1000 USD
- [18:26:23] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: that's only the minimum wage thou
- [18:26:36] Lionyx: not so high so
- [18:26:45] Lionyx: or at least compared to european countries
- [18:26:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: yeah the main reason why sooo many goods are so cheap is because
- [18:26:54] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the labour cost is hilariously cheap
- [18:27:08] Lionyx: yeah so proportionally it's a bit similar to europe/the US?
- [18:27:13] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: yeah correct.
- [18:27:29] Lionyx: cause if things are 3 times pricier in norway they also earn 3 times more money
- [18:27:38] Lionyx: so thats why i was wondering
- [18:27:39] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Lionyx this system is done intentionally thou, when your country revolves around profiting from tourism
- [18:27:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: you need to deliberately devaluate your currency to attract foreign tourism demand.
- [18:28:05] @Berserking Now: the prices in china were really nice
- [18:28:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: This is exactly what's happening in Japan too and china as well.
- [18:28:30] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: China and Japan are deliberately like Taiwan devaluating their currency so that they can export their goods more easily and attract foreign tourism.
- [18:28:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: not sure about Seoul thou.
- [18:29:17] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: ok let's move on to the history itself.
- [18:29:26] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: so what kind of 'nation' is Taiwan anyway?
- [18:29:53] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: i gotta say out of all the nations on the planet, Taiwan is the most unique kind of classification. To this day, politicians still debate what kind of nation Taiwan is.
- [18:30:13] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: so what caused such ambiguity? We need to look at the history itself.
- [18:30:23] +cc: (quick side-note; I might go to bed pretty soon, but I enjoyed this lecture of yours MRA, props to your prep :])
- [18:30:31] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: gn cc!
- [18:30:44] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: for majority of the 17th century Taiwan is a colony of dutch and Spanish rule.
- [18:31:04] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: shortly during 1682, China took control of Taiwan in a civil war, managed to push the dutch and Spanish out.
- [18:31:11] Lionyx: simultaneously or first dutch then spanish?
- [18:31:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: simutaneously
- [18:31:34] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: or afaik the time difference is tiny it is neligable
- [18:31:53] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: then at the end of the 19th century it was colonized again by the Japanese empire
- [18:31:57] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: after the first sino-japanese war
- [18:32:36] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: During 1945 at the end of the world war 2, both the Chinese and united states (which were temporarily world war 2 allies fighting against the axis)
- [18:32:43] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: they pushed the Japanese out of Taiwan.
- [18:33:00] 96k ☾: (I'm gonna head off. Sorry for arriving late to your lecture, MRA. Good job man. n_n)
- [18:33:03] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: gn!
- [18:33:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: after the Japanese surrendered, the Chinese military general refered to this day as 'Taiwan retrocession day'
- [18:33:34] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: this is a holiday that still exists in china on October 1945 25th
- [18:33:40] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: unofficially
- [18:33:57] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: this was supposed to be the day that marked when Taiwan has been integrated back into Chinese sovereignty
- [18:34:04] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: at least in china's perspective.
- [18:34:27] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: this was supposed to be the day that marked when Taiwan has been integrated back into Chinese sovereignty
- [18:34:54] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: but on the point of view from the other members of the allied powers including the United states, they did not recognise this integration but only as a 'military occupied zone' until 1952 where all Japanese colonisation completely withdrew.
- [18:35:06] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: took 7 years just to completely withdraw after the official surrender document has signed.
- [18:35:19] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: afaik i'm not aware why it required 7 years thou.
- [18:35:49] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: 1952 probably was when all Japanese laws, regulations and administrative cultures are reversed back to Taiwan, despite surrendering.
- [18:36:18] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: now this is the moment of history that caused the ambiguity of what kind of nation Taiwan is recognised as
- [18:37:19] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: when the Japanese signed this treaty about returning Taiwan back to the allies they did **not** sign if they are surrendering Taiwan back to China's sovereignty or to Taiwan's own sovereignty
- [18:37:26] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: (since they have already their own government established since the previous colonisations by the Spanish and the dutch)
- [18:37:45] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: arguably Taiwan was already separate from China in terms of culturally and politically for nearly 4 centuries
- [18:38:22] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: hey guys i love to hear from your opinions, i'm gonna create a poll.
- [18:38:44] Lionyx: do the magic
- [18:40:35] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: sorry just a little longer
- [18:41:14] |html|<div class="infobox"><p style="margin: 2px 0 5px 0"><span style="border:1px solid #777;color:#555;border-radius:4px;padding:0 3px"><i class="fa fa-bar-chart"></i> Poll ended</span> <strong style="font-size:11pt">[TrueEffect] Are you shy?</strong></p><div style="margin-top: 3px">1. <strong>Yes</strong> <small>(14 votes)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#79A;padding-right:81px"></span><small> 27%</small></div><div style="margin-top: 3px">2. <strong>No</strong> <small>(4 votes)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#8A8;padding-right:24px"></span><small> 8%</small></div><div style="margin-top: 3px">3. <strong>Depends on whom I'm with</strong> <small>(27 votes)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#88B;padding-right:159px"></span><small> 53%</small></div><div style="margin-top: 3px">4. <strong>A Little Bit</strong> <small>(6 votes)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#79A;padding-right:36px"></span><small> 12%</small></div></div>
- [18:41:14] (The poll was ended by AlphaWittem.)
- [18:41:15] AlphaWittem used /poll create What kind of "nation" will you classify Taiwan as?, Own independent sovereign nation but happens to be in Chinese soil, A nation under Chinese sovereignty but with some degree of independence and administration, some other classification
- [18:41:15] (A poll was started by AlphaWittem.)
- [18:41:30] The poll timer was turned on: the poll will end in 1 minute(s).
- [18:41:30] (The poll timer was set to 1 minute(s) by AlphaWittem.)
- [18:41:44] Lionyx: as of 2018 or as of 1952?
- [18:41:48] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: as of today
- [18:42:30] |html|<div class="infobox"><p style="margin: 2px 0 5px 0"><span style="border:1px solid #777;color:#555;border-radius:4px;padding:0 3px"><i class="fa fa-bar-chart"></i> Poll ended</span> <strong style="font-size:11pt">What kind of "nation" will you classify Taiwan as?</strong></p><div style="margin-top: 3px">1. <strong>Own independent sovereign nation but happens to be in Chinese soil</strong> <small>(1 vote)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#79A;padding-right:150px"></span><small> 50%</small></div><div style="margin-top: 3px">2. <strong>A nation under Chinese sovereignty but with some degree of independence and administration</strong> <small>(0 votes)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#8A8;padding-right:0px"></span><small> 0%</small></div><div style="margin-top: 3px">3. <strong>some other classification</strong> <small>(1 vote)</small><br /><span style="font-size:7pt;background:#88B;padding-right:150px"></span><small> 50%</small></div></div>
- [18:42:51] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: welp only 2 votes but
- [18:44:03] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: The ambiguity is very present, Taiwan's sovereignty has been exchanging hands several times on who colonizes them and who influences them.
- [18:44:12] Lionyx: i picked 3 cause imo it's its own independant nation on its own piece of land
- [18:44:21] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: ahh
- [18:44:47] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: arguably since Taiwan has it's own flag, it's own national anthem, its own democracy as well as its own military
- [18:45:10] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: it is more towards it's own independent 'sovereign' nation.
- [18:45:20] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: although the United nations do not classify as Taiwan being it's on independent nation yet
- [18:45:27] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: maybe one day who knows?
- [18:45:30] CKW: well that's rude
- [18:45:30] Lionyx: hasn't it taken China's permanent room in UN at some point? or am I thinking of something else
- [18:45:51] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: there's actually political tensions that Taiwan wants to take Taiwan back to it's own sovereign administration
- [18:45:57] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: on the other hand Taiwan wants to succeed.
- [18:46:09] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: the situation arguably here is Taiwan is only 'halfway' succeeded from China.
- [18:46:20] Lionyx: i guess cause it's an interesting source of tourism which china doesn't want to lose
- [18:46:35] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: indeed. but Taiwan's culture has already evolved so much
- [18:46:39] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: even the language is starting to differ.
- [18:47:01] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: we do not know what the future for Taiwan stands for in terms of its sovereignty status but
- [18:47:15] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: my forecast is it will eventually become it's own independent nation.
- [18:47:37] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: But doing this will take a lot of work and time because there is still another problem of Taiwan being it's own independent nation
- [18:47:48] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: that being is not just land sovereignty but airspace and water sovereignty
- [18:48:18] Lionyx: their water interferes with china's waters?
- [18:48:31] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: afaik the UN classifies a country has it's right to it's own sovereign airspace and water within a certain distance radius
- [18:48:33] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: until it becomes international
- [18:48:36] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: lio yes correct
- [18:49:04] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: if Taiwan demands its right to be an independent country it would also demand it's right to it's own sovereign airspace as well as waters, which part of it already overlaps with china.
- [18:49:25] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: trying to negotiate who owns which airspace and how much will without doubt cause a lot of political disputes.
- [18:49:46] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: so there's a long way to go until complete independence
- [18:50:02] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: and that concludes history!
- [18:50:33] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: As for the final section of this lecture! My personal experience visiting Taiwan!
- [18:50:54] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: I've been to Taiwan several times, reason being is it is extremely close, not even an hour flight from where i grew up.
- [18:51:33] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: best part? The street food is some of the best I've tasted.
- [18:51:45] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: The hot springs too!
- [18:52:09] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: 80% of tourists in Taiwan are Chinese Tourists.
- [18:52:31] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: due to geographic location, the biggest happiness i obtain from there is like i said previously is the hot springs.
- [18:52:46] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: I've attended both the ones artificially made in a resort as well as a natural one with a waterfall!
- [18:53:43] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: While the hotel rooms itself is nothing to be brag about, it is only slightly better than an inn but
- [18:53:55] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: i gotta say if you are on a holiday and if you live in asia
- [18:54:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: this is the best budget place to come and get the most out of it in terms of relaxation and foodies!
- [18:54:42] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: In Taiwan the main messenger app is called line messenger
- [18:54:52] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: it works just like WhatsApp, viber and wechat
- [18:55:02] Lionyx: is it also a cheap destination if you live in europe?
- [18:55:03] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: You can purchase a lot of things just tapping your phone on a scanner
- [18:55:08] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Lionyx nope unfortunately :(
- [18:55:37] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: to the point that bringing money isn't actually a must
- [18:55:42] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: *ofcourse you need a bank here
- [18:56:02] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: Hey guys before i conclude this, any questions you still have? :)
- [18:56:19] Lionyx: I think you hadn't seen my question back in the history part: → [00:45:45] Lionyx: hasn't it taken China's permanent room in UN at some point? or am I thinking of something else
- [18:56:44] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: no it hasn't
- [18:57:02] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: china knows it can't take it back, United States and several former allied members will resort in warfare just to stop them.
- [18:57:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: which china does not want to
- [18:57:21] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: So china tries to approach with some other diplomatic solutions. I doubt they will get anywhere thou.
- [18:57:29] Lionyx: no I mean like there are 5 permanent United Nations members which China is part of
- [18:57:42] Lionyx: (alongside the UK, the US, France & Russia)
- [18:57:54] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: oh yeah Taiwan is not considered part of china according to UK
- [18:58:07] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: so no representatives from Taiwan are in that member union
- [18:58:26] Lionyx: and iirc back in the 20th century China had seen its permanent spot being taken by a smaller entity, but can't recall if it was taiwan
- [18:58:49] Lionyx: cause the other nations weren't acknowledging people's republic of china
- [18:58:55] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: that's Hong Kong
- [18:59:07] Lionyx: alright that was my doubt
- [18:59:23] +Mighty+Rising+Ace: anyway thanks for coming guys i'll conclude it here!
