  3. [14:05] <LjL> h00k: you're not under inspection, you took the course of action you thought best, and i can't just say you should have done it differently like this or that. i'm just saying, the fact that !ops was called like that shows there *is* a general uneasiness, with robinetd in particular since it's hardly the first time.
  4. [14:05] <bazhang> certainly not, but the "let's make this a serious discussion only room" did
  5. [14:06] <jussi> I think lart is a horrible thing. its derrogatory, downputting and horrible.
  6. [14:06] <bazhang> sometimes people have been helping for many many hours, and just want some place...silly
  7. [14:06] <LjL> h00k: but if i had to say how i would have done it, maybe i wouldn't have placed too much emphasis on the inappropriateness of calling !ops (well, the second time i would have), and i would have asked robinetd to chill out
  8. [14:06] <tsimpson> bazhang: I don't know what part made it "a serious discussion only room", that's what I'm confused about
  9. [14:06] <h00k> LjL: which, in conversation, he did immediately
  10. [14:07] <h00k> the conversation turned to 'maple syrup' as a topic
  11.
  12. Yes, it turned to maple syrup but then was immediately followed by this:
  13.
  14. Tuesday Feb 21
  15.
  16. [20:47] <pangolin> I'm thinking it may be time to get a couple of weapons
  17. [20:47] <Beezow> pangolin: For what?
  18. [20:47] * Beezow owns a remington 870 express.
  19. [20:48] <pangolin> people are stupid and will start going ape crazy
  20. [20:48] <Beezow> 3.5" chamber. YEAAAAAAAAAH BOY
  21. [20:48] <pangolin> I need to make sure they don't come for my foods
  22. [20:48] <Beezow> People try to break into my house, they'll BE my foods.
  23. [20:48] <pangolin> that is what the fire pit in the basement is for :3
  24.
  25.
  26. That's cannibalism (or, at the very least, a joke about cannibalism). What's the matter with you people? Have you lost your bloody minds? Is the above somehow acceptable? In the world I live in that's not considered "family friendly," under any circumstances. It's the kind of thing even the FBI would be interested to hear about. But apart from being... well just throw all the guidelines at it and I bet they all stick, and then throw "overlooked and ignored" at it for good measure too; apart from it being all of those things it clearly illustrates the bulk of the problem:- you all are so close to the real problem you cannot see it to fix it. I had to read nine pages that went round and round in circles about what the problem was, how it got broke and how to fix it and ikonia alone showed he understood what the problem is. I clearly told you what/who the problem is but you blew that off as though it hadn't even registered. Well I hope what was said between 20:47 and 20:48 above gets the point across sufficiently for it to register this time - you are all so much a part of the robinetd game in #ubuntu-offtopic that you don't have the ability, or the credibility to fix the problem.

  260.
  261. henux, some people can do as they please and nothing happens (you just missed witnessing a perfectly good example from AtomicSpark just before you joined), and yet others can get into hot water just for calling the ops to deal with a troll.
  262.
  263. In conclusion back to Feb 22: http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2012/02/22/%23ubuntu-ops.txt
  264.
  265. [14:55] <ikonia> tsimpson: so as you see it, it's just one of a multitude of Ubuntu names offtopic channels that has no criteria for usage beyond the ubuntu code of conduct ?
  266. [14:55] <ikonia> "named"
  267. [14:55] <h00k> LjL: I donno what that means :(
  268. [14:55] <bazhang> moo
  269. [14:55] <tsimpson> ikonia: pretty much, exactly yes
  270. [14:55] <ikonia> ok,
  271. [14:55] <tsimpson> it's just there for whatever, unlike the other channels which have a specific purpose
  272. [14:56] <ikonia> so why don't we point people to defocus ?
  273. [14:56] <ikonia> (just for example - maybe not the best one I grant you ) ?
  274. [14:56] <tsimpson> because #defocus is neither safe or friendly, for a start
  275. [14:56] <ikonia> ok #offtopic (again just an example, but you get the idea)
  276. [14:57] <tsimpson> the channel still has the spirit of Ubuntu, it's just not a single-purpose channel
  277. [14:57] <ikonia> tsimpson: so would it be fair to summerise to say the COC is the key thing there
  278. [14:57] <tsimpson> we still keep the CoC at the heart of it, and the guidelines to ensure it's safe and friendly for everyone
  279. [14:57] <bazhang> yoiks huge ubottu flood
  280. [14:57] <h00k> sweet.
  281. [14:57] <tsimpson> in Ubuntu in general, the CoC is at the heart of it all
  282. [14:58] <tsimpson> the IRC Guidelines is really just an IRC-specific extension to the CoC
  283. [14:58] <bazhang> CVE-2012-0830.html
  284. [14:58] <ubottu> The php_register_variable_ex function in php_variables.c in PHP 5.3.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a request containing a large number of variables, related to improper handling of array variables.  NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2011-4885. (http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2012-0830)
  285. [14:58] <ikonia> would it be fair to maybe get an agreed definition of the channels use then before deciding how to improve it ?
  286. [14:58] <ikonia> as the scroll in here suggests many people have different views of what it is and what it was and what it should be
  287. [14:58]  * h00k blinks
  288. [14:58] <tsimpson> ikonia: that's my point though, it doesn't have _a_ use
  289. [14:59] <tsimpson> it's just for general talk/chat
  290. [14:59] <LjL> tbh ikonia, i think you're the only one really disagreeing about its use :P
  291. [14:59] <h00k> it has a uses.
  292. [14:59] <ikonia> LjL: fair enough, I was actually under the impression as AlanBell said that it was supposed to be for the community, not be it's own community
  293. [14:59] <tsimpson> h00k: I meant, doesn't have only one use, not that it's useless ;)
  294. [14:59] <ikonia> I'd just not heard that for a while, so thought it worth asking
  295.
  296.
  297. tsimpson, I have just illustrated that it's not the safe place you proclaim it to be. The guidelines (rules, CoC, ethics, call them what you wish, it all boils down to the same thing - respect for others) apply to some people and not to others and those charged with the application thereof are some of the worst offenders. I must remind you that the above examples were taken from logs after the fact during a period (one would think) everyone is aware of the problem and on their best behavior. How then can anyone expect the problem to be solved by those who perpetuate it?
  298.
  299. I have to be honest with you and let you know that reading through all nine pages of response to my original paste on Feb 22 I couldn't tell if I was more angry at you or embarassed for you:
  300. [1[14:55] <tsimpson> it's just there for whatever, unlike the other channels which have a specific purpose
  301.
  302. You need to ask yourself, "Does it have an Ubuntu related purpose?" Something worthy of having the "#ubuntu" part attached. If it doesn't change the name to #robinetd and please change the topic too.
  303.
  304. If it does have an Ubuntu related purpose then state it!
  305.
  306. [14:59] <tsimpson> it's just for general talk/chat
  307.
  308. That just doesn't cut it. I don't know if you're aware of the fact that Ubuntu is in the process of unveiling some pretty innovative stuff for TV and smartphones (and who knows what else?). People all over the world who have never had anything to do with ubuntu, linux or unix in their lives before are heading over to IRC to find out what they can about this new and exciting development. When they get to #ubuntu they are advised to use #ubuntu-offtopic (these are not the only people sent to #ubuntu-offtopic as you well know). If you think it's cool for them to be trolled and/or/then freaked out by conversation about cannibalism and guns, then, as far as Ubuntu is concerned, it doesn't have a use (or purpose) and it definitely is useless (to Ubuntu). I'm beginning to think that robinetd is just a symptom of the problem; the real problem sits on the IRCC and is afraid to set a defined policy in the interests of Ubuntu. Repeat - in the interests of Ubuntu!
