  1. The University has asked all faculty to distribute this note to all students, either by E-mail or by ICON. This is the E-mail version:
  2.
  3. CHOOSING THE P/N OPTION FOR SPRING 2020 COURSES
  4.
  5. Students may request a P/N as a final semester grade for a spring course that otherwise would use a standard A-F letter grade. Please read the information below and be sure to talk with your advisor before deciding to request the P/N option. The deadline for the request is May 8.
  6.
  7.
  8.
  9. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: P/N OPTION
  10.
  11.
  12.
  13. WHAT DOES P/N MEAN?
  14.
  15. P/N is an option for you to use in Spring 2020 if you prefer not to earn the final standard letter grade for the semester otherwise used in one, some, or all of your spring courses. UI is allowing this option to help you through the transition to online learning and to provide you with more flexibility during the current crisis.
  16.
  17. Some courses are excluded from the P/N option. For example, an S/U course is not available for the P/N option since an S/U course does not use standard A-F grades for the final semester grade but instead uses S or U.
  18.
  19. P stands for Pass.
  20.
  21. A grade of C- or higher is needed to earn a final grade of P that will appear as your end of the semester grade on your transcript. The P is not be used in the ICON gradebook; grades are used in ICON as set up by your instructor. Your final letter grade visible in ICON will be converted to the P if you earn a C- or higher and if you request the P/N option by the deadline.
  22.
  23. A student will earn the same semester hours for a P as for courses with A-F grades, such as 3 s.h. or 4 s.h.
  24.
  25. The P will count toward completion of requirements for a major, minor, certificate; for GE requirements; and for all other requirements needed for earning a major and degree just as letter grades do.
  26.
  27. The P is not calculated in the GPA.
  28.
  29. N stands for Nonpass.
  30.
  31. A grade of D+ or lower will result in an N which will appear as your end of the semester grade on your transcript. N will not appear on the ICON gradebook; instead letter grades will appear. Your final letter grade visible in ICON will be converted to the N if you earn a D+ or lower and if you requested the P/N option by the deadline.
  32.
  33. A student will not earn semester hours for a course with an N.
  34.
  35. A course with an N will not count toward the completion of CLAS or UI requirements.
  36.
  37. The N is not calculated in the GPA.
  38.
  39.
  40.
  41. Q and A: PROCEDURES FOR SELECTING THE P/N OPTION
  42.
  43. How do I request the P/N option for Spring 2020 courses?
  44.
  45. An online form to request the P/N option will be added to MyUI soon.
  46.
  47. Does my course instructor need to approve the P/N option?
  48.
  49. No. The choice to use the P/N grade is yours and does not involve the instructor.
  50.
  51. Will my instructor be notified if I choose the P/N option?
  52.
  53. No. Your earned letter grade (A-F, with plus or minuses if used) will be entered by your instructor; this standard grade will be converted to a P or N if you request the change by the deadline.
  54.
  55. Do I need my advisor’s permission?
  56.
  57. Using the P/N option is an important decision. Discuss this matter with your advisor.
  58.
  59. Can I request the P/N grading option for a single course?
  60. Yes. You may choose the P/N for just one course. You may also request this for all of your spring courses or just for a few of them. The choice is yours.
  61.
  62. Can I request the P/N option for all my courses?
  63.
  64. Yes. You may request the P/N grading option for any number of your regularly graded courses. The choices is yours.
  65.
  66. Is there a separate form for each course to request the P/N grading option?
  67.
  68. Yes. You will need to submit a separate online request for each course on MyUI.
  69.
  70. If I want to keep my courses as graded with A through F letter grades, what should I do?
  71.
  72. Nothing. If you do not submit the online P/N option form, your courses will retain the default grading system already in place.
  73.
  74. Whom should I talk to if I am unsure about my choices?
  75.
  76. Contact your academic advisor to discuss the ramifications of choosing a P/N grading option. You also may contact Academic Programs and Student Development at clasps@uiowa.edu or 319-335-2633 to discuss your options with an associate director.
  77.
  78.
  79. Q and A: IMPORTANT DEADLINES FOR THE P/N OPTION
  80.
  81. What is the deadline to request the P/N grading option for Spring 2020?
  82.
  83. The deadline to request a change to the P/N grading option is Friday, May 8, 2020.
  84.
  85. What if I change my mind about the P/N grading option?
  86.
  87. You may cancel the P/N grading option request by the May 8, 2020, deadline.
  88.
  89. What if I change my mind about the P/N grading option after the May 8, 2020, deadline?
  90.
  91. CLAS students must contact Academic Programs and Development, clasps@uiowa.edu,
  92.
  93. 319-335-2633, to discuss how to petition for a late change to your chosen grading option. All petitions for a late change to the grading option must be submitted by June 5, 2020; however, approval after the May 8, 2020, deadline is not guaranteed.
  94.
  95. If I choose P/N before May 8, 2020, can I change back to graded once final grades post?
  96.
  97. CLAS students must contact Academic Programs and Student Development, clasps@uiowa.edu, 319-335-2633, to discuss how to petition for a late change to your chosen grading option. All petitions for a late change to the grading option must be submitted by June 5, 2020; however, approval after the May 8, 2020, deadline is not guaranteed.
  98.
  99.
  100. Q and A: EFFECTS OF P/N OPTION ON GPA (DEANS/PRESIDENT’S LIST, FINANCIAL AID, SCHOLARSHIPS, GRADUATE OR PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL ADMISSION, PROBATION, DISMISSAL)
  101.
  102. If I request the P/N grading option for all my spring 2020 courses, what will my UI Term (Semester) GPA be?
  103.
  104. If you choose the P/N option for all courses, you will have a UI term GPA that appears as 0.00, but it will be read as a "blank" and not as zero. That is, P/N grades neither help nor harm your term GPA.
  105.
  106. If I choose P/N am I still eligible for the Dean's List and/or the President's List?
  107.
  108. The standards for Dean's List and President's List have not changed. You must have at least 12 semesters hour of UI graded coursework to qualify. See https://clas.uiowa.edu/students/handbook/recognition-academic-achievement for additional information.
  109.
  110. How will changing to the P/N grading option affect my financial aid?
  111.
  112. Please review the Office of Student Financial Aid updates found here: https://financialaid.uiowa.edu/resources/covid19.
  113.
  114. How will changing to the P/N grading option affect my scholarship?
  115.
  116. For CLAS scholarships, P grades will count towards your full-time or part-time enrollment status. A grade of P or N does not impact GPA, so using the P/N grading option will not impact scholarship renewals. Please review the Office of Student Financial Aid updates found here: https://financialaid.uiowa.edu/resources/covid19.
  117.
  118. If I am on academic probation, how will choosing P/N affect my probationary status?
  119.
  120. P/N grades will not have any impact on your GPA. Only letter-graded courses will affect your GPA and thus your academic standing in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  121.
  122. If I am on academic probation and receive N’s for all my Spring 2020 courses, will I be dismissed?
  123.
  124. No. At the close of the spring 2020 semester, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will not be dismissing any student on academic probation during the spring 2020 semester. All students currently on academic probation during the spring 2020 semester will be either restored to good standing or continued on academic probation, depending on the student's GPA after spring semester grades post. If you opt for all P/Ns for your spring courses, you will neither hurt nor improvement your GPA, for example, and will be continued on probation. CLAS students are encouraged to contact Academic Programs and Student Development, clasps@uiowa.edu, 319-335-2633, and ask for an appointment with an Associate Director to discuss issues related to probation and dismissal.
  125.
  126.
  127. Will I be placed on academic probation if I receive all N grades in spring 2020?
  128.
  129. Grades of N will not affect your GPA. If you currently are in academic good standing and receive grades of N in all spring 2020 courses you would remain in good standing. Only regular, graded courses will affect your GPA and thus your academic standing in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Please see https://clas.uiowa.edu/students/students-academic-policies/academic-probation for additional information. CLAS students are encouraged to contact Academic Programs and Student Development, clasps@uiowa.edu,
  130.
  131. 319-335-2633, and ask for an appointment to speak to an Associate Director about issues related to probation and dismissal.
  132.
  133.
  134. Q and A: ICON VS GRADE REPORT; SECOND GRADE ONLY OPTION; MAXIMUM ALLOWED P/N HOURS
  135.
  136. My grade on ICON shows a grade of D+, D, or D-, why didn't I receive credit?
  137.
  138. If you elected to change to P/N grading, you received an N as your final grade in the course. N grades do not earn credit. They also are not calculated in your GPA.
  139.
  140. I am retaking a course this semester and applied for a second-grade-only option (SGO) so what will happen to my SGO if I change to the P/N option for the spring 2020 enrollment?
  141.
  142. P/N graded courses cannot be applied for an SGO on a course first taken for a letter grade; therefore, your SGO request will be disqualified. If you took the course for a grade the first time, you must take it for a grade the second time to use the second-grade-only option.
  143.
  144. If I receive an N grade in a course, can I retake it in the future and use the second-grade-only option (SGO)?
  145.
  146. If you receive a grade of N in a course you may retake it in the future, but because the N does not impact your GPA, you will not need to use a second-grade-only option for the course.
  147.
  148. Will the P grades from this semester count toward the maximum limit of 15 semester hours (s.h.) of P courses that may be applied towards the 120 s.h. required to graduate?
  149.
  150. P courses taken in Spring 2020 will not count toward the limit of 15 s.h. of P grades allowed for the 120 s.h. required to graduate.
