- > Set in a 1960s period
- > The town is a "rehabilitation center", a place where society can store the insane, handicapped and sick
- > Mabel is sent in with a legitimate affliction, but Dipper was simply misdiagnosed (or was he?)
- > Stan runs the asylum, known as the Mystery Shack, and appears to use it to provide subjects for his experiments to create freaks, superhumans and the occasional cure in his quest for the almighty dollar
- (Character file: http://pastebin.com/wsK7RXBg)
- > Rivalry between Stan and Dipper; Stan wants to maintain control, but Dipper repeatedly escapes with Mabel
- > Asylum is virtually impossible to escape from; surrounded by thick forests, mountain ranges and various lakes, all of which likely contain creatures of unimaginable horror
- > Asylum is also inhabited by various mad scientists, shamans and lost souls who either help or hinder Dipper
- > Mabel suffers from Multiple Personality Syndrome
- > One side is regular Mabel, and the other is manipulative and aggressive
- > She also suffers from delusions, believes that she is in a sleepy town solving mysteries with her brother in the distant future
- > Carries around a stuffed toy named Waddles, with whom she talks to as a way of venting feelings
- > Wendy is an insane axe murderess
- > Always claims innocence, but in general acts very secretive
- > Befriends the twins and acts as a troublemaker
- > Suffers from Disassociative Identity Disorder due to the death of her brother; during woodcutting, he crossed the line of fire, losing his arm and bleeding to death
- > One personality is terrified and guilt-ridden, believing she deserves to stay in the asylum
- > The other is the same old Wendy, though at times she seems more sensitive
- (Character file: http://pastebin.com/MTPpFHv1)
- > Pacifica has snapped from years of abuse
- > Years of stress as the 'perfect' child alongside physical abuse were the main factors
- > Victim of sexual abuse; her mother was taught that sex was for reproduction only, had her tubes tied after Pacifica's birth, wouldn't even consider sex, so father turned to her
- > Is in the town for 'compulsive lying' and 'self-harm'; the one time she stood up to her parents, they 'convinced' the authorities that she was unstable
- > This creates a cycle where she actually does self-harm, feeling as if the world has let her down
- > She appears to have feelings for Dipper, likely stemming from his boundless optimism and determination
- > Idolises him to an extent, viewing him as a knight in shining armor
- > However, as the only form of 'affection' was her father's, it's the only way she knows how to show Dipper how she feels
- > Her parents visit her from time to time (ranges from 5-6 months), attempting to persuade her to admit her initial claims were untrue with the promise she can return home if she does
- > She hasn't broken yet, but after their last visit she's begun to talk about how she'll soon be returning to her parents

- > Tambry works in the convent as a nun to repent for her sin: homosexuality
- > Is close friends with Wendy, which earns her mockery from some of the inmates
- > Rarely, if ever, talks to the twins, though Dipper is fond of her as she is one of the few sane people in town
- > Is constantly torn up over her feelings towards Wendy and the shame constantly heaped onto her by the nuns
- > Wendy generally goes with it, and will on occasion fool around with Tambry despite knowing why she's there, both as a way of getting back at Stan and to help Tambry feel better about herself
- > As a result of this, Tambry spends almost every evening at the confessional talking to a god she's mostly given up on, talking about her fantasies involving Wendy or how they went on a date (though by her standard stepping outside the convent would count as a date)
- > Candy is obsessed with the morbid and medical
- > She was sent to the asylum after a mock surgery went wrong
- > Complete lack of empathy, cannot understand why people would not want to be improved
- > Because of a lack of 'normal' people in the town, has shifted from genetics to robotics, taking oddjobs for the various scientists to steal parts for her perfect android
- > Is one of the few to know what happens in Stan's lab, which fuels her fascination with the morbid
- > She starts to view Stan as a role model, and begins replicating experiments and giving psychiatric help to the inmates
- > Stan knows full well that this is happening, but doesn't stop it to see how far the girl will take it
- > Her lack of empathy means she often tries to cure inmates of their afflictions, believing Tambry to be a sinner and Wendy to be a cold-blooded killer
- > Dipper is an object of fascination to her; she wants there to be something wrong with him, but second-hand knowledge and playground logic won't let her accept that he's sane
- (Character File: http://pastebin.com/UA7yce1y)
- > Grenda suffers from Downs Syndrome and elephantiasis
- > Is extremely strong
- > Is very attached to Candy, and helps her with her experiments (is essentially the Igor to Candy's Dr. Frankenstein)
- > In turn, Candy has promised to help 'improve' Grenda
- > Gideon is a murderous, power-hungry and charming psychopath
- > He knows how to game the tests, effectively making the entire staff think he's relatively normal
- > In public, he's simply a young performer suffering from a nervous breakdown
- > Only Stan and the few who cross him know what he's capable of
- > He abolutely despises Stan for holding power over him, and for frequently abusing it
- > Has a thing for Mabel's manipulative and aggressive side
- > Soos is the caretaker of the asylum
- > His job is to deal with patients and their problems, fixing equipment, handling visitors
- > Originally a patient suffering both from mental illness and club foot
- > Stan helped 'stabilise' him through meds, earning the admiration of Soos
- > As he wasn't causing any more trouble, Stan decided to hire him as a handyman
- > Is usually nice to the twins and understands their plight, but a job is a job
- > At one point, begins to relapse due to his medication being tampered with
- > Hides this from everyone out of fear of being made an inmate again, and also because he does not want to disappoint Stan
- > In the end, he is found out and recommitted
- > Hernando is a staff member at the asylum
- > Is one of the nicer members of staff, wants to legitimately help the people there
- > Dreams of being a professional swimmer, earning him the nickname "Mermando"
- > Mabel has a crush on him, and decides to 'break him out' from the asylum
- > Maple (mapgirl) is another staff member
- > Works with Soos, who begins to develop feelings for her. She begins to return his affections and starts romancing him
- > In reality, she is a power-hungry sociopath who is using Soos to gain a higher position in the sanatorium and see for herself what Stan is up to, and maybe even join in on them
- > Once she got close to her goal, she began to tamper with Soos' medication so he would relapse. This was not only because he was no longer of any use to her, but also to prevent him from arousing suspicion
- > Nate and Lee are both staff members at the asylum
- > Only working for the summer, don't particularly care about the place
- > Slackers, spend more time talking with Tambry and Wendy than doing work
- > Serve as a link to the outside world for the girls
- > Stan dislikes them, but keeps them because they're cheap labor (and unlike the others, people would notice if they disappeared)
- > Thomson is another staff member at the asylum
- > Is friends with Nate and Lee, but is scared of Wendy
- > Has OCD and occasional anxiety attacks, but hides them well from Stan
