  1.
  2. >twelve hours of physical labor has left you beyond tired
  3. >all you want to do is go home and sleep forever
  4. >you almost fall asleep on the bus home, but you know not to make that mistake a second time
  5. >fucking cats can empty a man's pockets without making a sound
  6. >you get off the bus and head to your apartment
  7. >of course calling it an apartment would be dishonest, it was a straight up project
  8. >the group of dobermans sitting near the door glare and growl at you as you walk up
  9. >one of them flashes gang signs at you
  10. >you ignore them, this is a daily routine
  11. >you drag your exhausted body up the stairs, trying to ignore the suffocating stench of urine
  12. >why did you have to live on the tenth floor
  13. >you walk down the hall to your door taking in the new graffiti
  14. >as you unlock the door you hear something run towards you
  15. >you sigh and open it
  16. "You're home!"
  17. >your daughter barrels into you and knocks you to the ground
  18. >her tail wags back and forth rapidly as she licks your face over and over
  19. >in an instant all of your fatigue leaves your body
  20. "Hey Lulu. how was school?"
  21. >she smiles at you like no one ever has
  22. "It was fun. We learned about the pyramids."
  23. "That's great. Did you eat dinner already?"
  24. >she nods
  25. >you get up off the floor and get her things ready for tomorrow
  26. >you lay out her clothes, pack her a lunch and go to bed
  27. >as you lay in your bed listening to the sounds of gunshots and police sirens you hear someone walk in
  28. "Can I sleep with you tonight?"
  29. >you can't refuse her
  30. >she curls up next to you and in minutes you can hear her soft snoring
  31. >you've never been happier in your life
  32. >a year ago neither of you thought things would end like this
  33. >neither of you ever thought you could ever be happy
  34. >as you drift off to sleep you think of what has happened to bring you to this moment
  35.
  36. ----
  37.
  38. >you're twenty-two and you have no future
  39. >you're a high school dropout working a dead end job
  40. >you're barely making enough to get by
  41. >you live in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city
  42. >your friends tried to tell you it wasn't so bad, that crime has gone down recently
  43. >they're full of shit
  44. >your apartment has been broken into twice since you've moved in
  45. >you're sleeping in the bathtub most nights to avoid gunshots
  46. >every weekend there are groups of kids fighting outside
  47. >a woman got raped in the field across from you last week
  48. >you're one the only humans living in this building, and the other residents take pleasure in reminding you of that
  49. >you walk out the door and step in a pool of urine
  50. >you swear loudly and notice a group of young bears laughing
  51. >they pull shit like this all the time
  52. >you want to say something to them, but the last time you did that their mother almost tore your head off
  53. >to them that was the go ahead to walk all over you
  54. >that was your life in a nutshell, eating shit with a smile
  55. >you walk out the building and to the bus stop
  56. >a group of kids with purple bandanas tucked in their pockets walks up to you
  57. "You got some change dawg?"
  58. >you ignore them
  59. >one of them gets angry
  60. "Yo you fuckin deaf or somethin'?"
  61. >you don't see the fist coming
  62. >before you know it you're on the ground getting beaten and two guys are running through your pockets
  63. >they run off with your bus fare, and your food money for the week
  64. >for a moment you consider jumping under the bus when it comes
  65. "What is this world coming to? These young motherfuckers don't respect a got damn thing"
  66. >an older sheep shakes his head
  67. "Here. I wouldn't want you to miss work"
  68. >he hands you some money for the bus
  69. >you take it, not mentioning your frustration at him just watching you get beat
  70. >when the bus arrives the driver sees your bloodied face and can't hold in his laughter
  71. >you drop the money in and take a seat
  72. >your already angry, and you haven't even started work
  73.
  74. ----
  75.
  76. >working at a 7-11 in a nice neighborhood would be mind numbing
  77. >here it's infuriating
  78. >you've had to deal with a visibly pregnant woman angry that she can't buy a 40 ounce with EBT
  79. >two kids trying to steal candy
  80. >a group of high schoolers posting up outside and scaring away customers
  81. >and now your boss is yelling at you because while you were calling the police someone broke the lock on the cage and stole two propane tanks
  82. >you figure there's no way this day can get any worse
  83. >the bell on the door rings
  84. >you see a young girl walk in
  85. >a dog by the looks of her
  86. >her fur is patchy and rough looking
  87. >her clothes are dirty and loose
  88. >even through the thick plexiglass you can tell she hasn't had any food in a while
  89. >you don't take your eyes off her as she stumbles through the store
  90. >she grabs a candy bar and brings it to the counter
  91. "That'll be $1.05"
  92. >one of those used to be fifty cents
  93. >fucking sugar tax
  94. >the girl reaches in her pocket and pulls out a handful of coins
  95. >her hands are covered in cuts and scrapes
  96. >you count it her money
  97. >she doesn't have enough
  98. >you open your mouth to say something but something about that look in her eyes stops you
  99. >she has eyes that look like they've completely given up on life
  100. >you see them every day in the mirror
  101. >seeing that look on someone so young makes you sick to your stomach
  102. >you add some of your own change to hers
  103. "You have a nice day"
  104. >the girl takes her candy and leaves without saying a word
  105. >the rest of your shift ends without incident
  106. >as you head home you can't stop thinking about that girl
  107. >you're so distracted that you step right into the pile of shit someone left outside your door
  108.
  109. ----
  110.
  111. >it was Friday
  112. >the good news was that it was payday
  113. >the bad news was that it was the weekend
  114. >bad shit always happens on the weekend
  115. >you deposit your check at the bank and take a little for dinner
  116. >as you walk to get something to eat you see that girl again
  117. >she's wearing the same clothes she was last time
  118. >they're caked in grime what looks like dried blood
  119. >you feel sorry for the girl so you extend a hand toward her
  120. "'hey, you wanna come with me and get something to eat?"
  121. >her tail sticks up
  122. >she bites down hard on your hand and runs off
  123. "Fuck!"
  124. >you're bleeding
  125. >people around you are all laughing
  126. >you run home to put some peroxide on your hand
  127. >after disinfecting your hand you go to the kitchen
  128. >you don't know why, since your fridge is empty
  129. >you think about ordering out. but no one delivers to this apartment anymore
  130. >you look out your window and see a growing crowd of teens
  131. >it's about that time
  132. "YO WORLDSTAAAAR!"
  133. >in an instant a fight breaks out
  134. >it's one giant furry brawl
  135. >every weekend with this shit
  136. >you turn on your tv to watch the news
  137. "Police are searching for suspects in a shooting that occurred in the city's south side. Police say a man was walking to his house when another man walked up and opened fire. Police are not disclosing whether or not the shooting was gang related at this time. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, bringing this weekend's homocide victims up to three on Friday"
  138. >you turn the tv off
  139. >you've thought about getting a CCW
  140. >you decide against it since you'd be the first person it would get used on
  141. >you go to bed hoping that maybe tomorrow won't be as awful
  142.
  143. ----
  144.
  145. >your hopes were for naught
  146. >you open the door, taking care to step over the pile of garbage your neighbors left outside
  147. >as you walk down the street the hairs on the back of your neck stand up
  148. >you instinctively jump to the side
  149. >your instincts were right as a large glob of bird shit falls to the ground with a splat
  150. "Fuck you!"
  151. >the dove laughs as it flies away
  152. >your day just started and your already angry
  153. >the area around your building is like a maze
  154. >if you don't know exactly where you're going you can get lost
  155. >and if that happens you're dead
  156. >you follow the path you mapped out, but you hear something in the distance that makes you change course
  157. >it sounds like kids shouting
  158. >as you get closer you see a group of kids throwing rocks at something
  159. >scratch that, someone
  160. >it's the girl from yesterday
  161. >she's shaking and covering her head with her hands
  162. >you can see blood on the ground near her
  163. >you don't know what comes over you, but you run towards them
  164. "Hey!"
  165. >the kids all run off, but you catch one and grab him by the arm
  166. >he thrashes and tries to slip free
  167. "Let me go, fuckin' faggot"
  168. >you're too angry to think straight
  169. "Why are you throwing rocks at that girl?"
  170. >the boy shrugs
  171. "Ain't like she's good for shit else."
  172. >you want to punch this kid in the mouth, but you let him go
  173. >you run up to the girl
  174. "Are you okay?"
  175. >her eyes widen in fright and backs away from you
  176. >shit, she's crying
  177. >you back up slightly
  178. "It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you."
  179. >she doesn't look like she believes you
  180. "I'm Anon, what's your name?"
  181. >she sniffles
  182. "Lulu. You're that man from the store."
  183. >so she recognizes you
  184. "Yeah."
  185. >she stops crying and stands up
  186. >she looks you up and down
  187. >something about that makes your skin crawl
  188. >you take a small step forward
  189. >she doesn't react at all
  190. >that's good
  191. "Where are your parents?"
  192. >she looks down at the ground
  193. >that answers that question
  194. "Are you hungry?"
  195. >she nods
  196. "Let's get something to eat okay?"
  197.
  198. ----
  199.
  200. >you can feel everyone's eyes on you as you sit in the McDonald's
  201. >that's to be expected
  202. >a human with an anthro is strange enough on its own
  203. >but this is a child who clearly looks like she's been abused
  204. >you hope those hushed whispers don't turn into calls for the police
  205. >Lulu takes small bites from the burger you bought for her
  206. >she tries not to let her gratitude show on her face
  207. >it's probably the first thing she's had to eat in days
  208. "So, where do you live?"
  209. "Outside"
  210. >this is too awkward
  211. >you think of something else to ask her
  212. "Is there anyone you can stay with?"
  213. "No"
  214. >she looks angry
  215. >you decide to stop asking questions
  216. >the two of you finish your meal in silence and go your separate ways
  217. >you figure that's the last time you'll be seeing her
  218. >the sun is going down, which means it's time to head home
  219. >a human outside at night is easy pickings
  220. >if one of these animals catches you alone getting robbed is the best you can hope for
  221. >when you get home you see that the lock on your door is broken again
  222. >great, something else that needs fixing
  223. >you go to bed trying to ignore the shouting coming from the apartment next door
  224.
  225. ----
  226.
  227. >you don't see the girl again for the next few weeks
  228. >part of you is glad. You barely have enough money to feed yourself, let alone someone else
  229. >but another part of you can't help but worry
  230. >some of the things you've heard about what happens to kids in this city makes you sick to think about
  231. >you try and take your mind off of her for now
  232. >the burning summer heat is doing a good job of that
  233. >summertime means that everyone is outside trying to cool off
  234. >that means a much greater chance of some dumb shit happening
  235. >the sun is beating down on you
  236. >you're so hot you can barely walk
  237. >work is going to suck
  238. >you're working as fast as you can but people are still complaining
  239. >the heat is making them irate
  240. >you don't dare complain, the plexiglass might be able to stop a bullet, but a charging animal is another story
  241. >you manage to get through your entire shift without getting mauled
  242. >as you're getting ready to leave that girl walks in
  243. >she looks just as dirty as ever
  244. >one of her ears looks like it had been chewed on
  245. >she walks to the back and grabs a small slurpee
  246. >you look at her and shake your head
  247. "It is way too hot for a small. Get something a little bigger"
  248. >the girl leaves and comes back with the largest size available
  249. >she gazes at it longingly, but after a moment she looks kind of sad
  250. "I don't have enough for this"
  251. >she lets out a small whine
  252. "Don't worry, I'll cover it"
  253. >the girl eyes you suspiciously
  254. "What do you want?"
  255. >you don't want to know what would lead her to ask a question like that
  256. "Nothing"
  257. >she takes a sip of her drink and smiles, her tail swishing through the air
  258. >as she turns to leave you call out to her
  259. "Hey Lulu, it's not good going hungry when it's this hot out. If we happen to see each other I'll get you some food. How does that sound?"
  260. >she turns around and leaves without a word
  261. >her tail wagging slightly faster than before
  262.
  263. ----
  264.
  265. >you repeat this pattern for a while
  266. >you two come across each other in the street and you end up going off somewhere to eat
  267. >over time you've learned how to talk to her without her shutting down
  268. >you've managed to learn several things about this girl
  269. >she never met her father
  270. >her mother is an addict
  271. >she used to stay in a foster home, but left for reasons she won't go into
  272. >she's been living on the streets for two years
  273. >since school is out for the summer she hasn't been eating regularly
  274. >the more you learn the worse you feel
  275. >you shake those thoughts out of your head
  276. >she looks different now
  277. >she's slightly larger and her fur is growing back
  278. >her brown eyes have more life to them now
  279. >she looks happy
  280. >she looks up at you, her ears are upright and perky
  281. "Thanks"
  282. >you can't help but smile
  283. >you've never felt this way about another person before
  284. "Don't worry about it"
  285. >she starts laughing
  286. >an employee walks up to your table with a grimace on their face
  287. "Eckuse me, I'm a need you and this girl to get out. You botherin' my customers"
  288. >you look around and notice other people glaring at your table, some of them holding their nose
  289. "Fine"
  290. >you don't know what their problem is. This is Popeye's, not some five star restaurant
  291. >you and the girl leave together
  292. "I'm sorry"
  293. >she shrugs
  294. "I'm used to it. At least they let me eat first this time."
  295. >you don't know what comes over you
  296. >you wrap your arms around the girl and hold her tight
  297. >she pauses for a moment before returning you hug
  298. "See you around"
  299. >the two of you go your separate ways
  300. >you go home feeling elated
  301. >you've had a long stretch of good days
  302. >of course at the time you had no idea how bad things were going to get
