  1. It's only when you stop to rest when you notice how much noise you've been making. You almost slap yourself for running around with a bell on your neck.
  2.
  3. You thought it was innocent enough when Monika said you have to survive out here for the night or she'll "get you", and gave you a bug out bag and a fifteen minute head start. But that was until everything clicked into place.
  4.
  5. There was a look in her eyes when she said it. Five minutes ago you checked the bag she gave you, no food but some survival equipment. There was no food, and you realized while looking over the contents why she gave you the bag.
  6. The flashlight was a hefty, spotlight style, there was a small folding survival knife, smooth rosewood grip and a small shine of steel peaking out of the top of its canvas sheath. There was a hefty old GPS that still worked, there was even a thermal blanket. But the moonlight glinted off the blanket into your face.
  7.
  8. The flashlight was a literal beacon. The night was lit up by the full moon. A harvest moon. The blanket would reflect the moonlight, you'd be visible for miles. Everything else was there to slow you down, so you had no choice but to pick at one or two objects and stuff the whole bag under a bush. You've been making your way through the forest since.
  9. You suck air into your lungs as quietly as you can while you try to remember your training. Snake's gloriously sculpted ass fills your minds eye.
  10.
  11. Okay, that won't help much.
  12.
  13. You opt to instead scan your surroundings, letting the breath the forest was holding while you made noise finally flow around you.
  14.
  15. The breeze flowed through the grass and branches sounding like so man whispers, the sound of insects and small woodland creatures faded back in. Your eyes pry at every shadow and silhouette. Can Monika climb trees? You suppress a shudder.
  16. If you weren't hiding in this forest from her, you'd imagine you both would find it breathtaking. Everything between you two was going perfect as well, you bought her a new scarf and a pair of wool thigh highs, and in return she got you a watch-
  17.
  18. You couldn't stop your gasp. Your watch. You give your surroundings one more glance before bringing it up to inspect.
  19. It's a simple, black and olive digital watch, built to take hard wear. It's half an hour past midnight, but that's not what draws your attention. There's an alarm that's set to go off in thirty seconds.
  20.
  21. Thanking your lucky stars for user friendliness you press a button on the watch to remove the alarm. A high pitched beep pierces the ambiance, echoing out from your wrist. You throw yourself to side, forgoing whatever sense of stealth you built up.
  22.
  23. A dull thud against the rock you were just pressed against tells you that the choice to run was an excellent one. You spare a glance over your shoulder, and you see her emerald eyes against her shadowed form. Close, too close. She followed the noise you made and waited for you to slip up. You duck through the trees, running in a straight line would get an arrow in your back.
  24.
  25. You didn't know she owned a bow. She practiced archery with her parents when she vacationed, she said as much, but you didn't know she had her own weapon, although it could have been her fathers. You slow your run as you breathe through your mouth, you need to get quiet fast or you'll get tired and then get shot. The tall pines thin out in front of you, looks like this is the end of this patch of woodland. If you didn't know she had a bow, you'd try to make a run for it, but you don't know how good she is at hitting moving targets. She might also see you easily if you move parallel to the trees, leaving you with one option. You hope Monika can't climb trees. As you grip and shuffle up the bark you think of a way to turn the tables on her. After reaching a branch you pull yourself up on it.
  26.
  27. It's high enough that she won't notice you unless she's specifically combing the trees, but low enough to hit the ground with a roll if you need to. Folding your legs, you think. Then you remember the watch. You grin to yourself as you undo the band and stuff it in your jacket to muffle its noise. Five minutes. You throw it hard and fast, it disappears into the grass in a blur.
  28.
  29. You see her form poke out of the forest as she walks into the clearing, finally exposed under the moonlight. Her bow looks a lot cheaper now, like she bought it expecting to only need it once. She's wearing a rust coloured jacket over her black tee, and judging from what you can see of her lower body in the grass, she's still wearing a pair of jeans and hiking boots. You watch her body language intently. It seems she wasn't expecting your disappearing act, and she's nervously scanning the surrounding tall grass for you. You count down and time it just right, dropping down into a crouch as your watch starts beeping a high pitched tune in the distance, drawing her attention to the other line of trees in the distance.
  30.
  31. You both slink off in opposite directions. You have a surprise in mind when she comes back.
  32.
  33. Hours pass before she returns to the cabin, closing the door silently behind her. Her footfalls thud heavily against the wooden floor. She drops the bow and quiver next to her bedroom door before falling into her bed. You slink out of the shadows, pausing to inspect the contents of her quiver. The arrows themselves are modern with a hollow aluminium shaft and neon green and orange fletching. You feel a sinking feeling in your gut when you look at the heads of the arrows.
  34. Three of them are tipped with steel broadheads, the rest are tipped with large black spheres that are soft to the touch.
  35.
  36. You hear her sobbing into her pillow, interspersed with her crying your name. You silently flick your knife open. You can't say for sure that the broadheads were intended for you or for self defense, so you opt to err on the side of caution. As you ease your way into the room, you deliberately set your foot against a part of the floor and let it creak, making her gasp and look in your direction. Her eyes are bloodshot and her face is marred with dried tears, it looks like she's been crying long before she got inside.
  37.
  38. "I-I thought something went wrong, I found your watch and I thought-" You gesture at her with your knife, making her cover her mouth. You point back at her quiver and she averts her gaze.
  39.
  40. "I wanted to make it fun and look cute, I was going to hit you with one of those foam arrows and... I took it too far, didn't I? I just wanted to look cool and hardcore to impress you, but I..." She turns around in bed, facing away from you. After a pause that feels like a minute, she speaks again.
  41.
  42. "I won't stop you if you want to" She takes a shaky breath. "Break up with me. I messed up bad and... And..." Her voice is thick with defeat, and she can't choke out the rest of what she's saying. She just lays there, shaking her head and sobbing, waiting for you to leave.
  43.
  44. You gently close your knife and set it on the nightstand, before quietly sitting on the bed opposite from her. You gently rub her shoulder, making her freeze. "Go away." She squeaks out at you between sniffles. You respond by lying down next to her and sliding your hands around her waist to hug her, under her jacket.
  45.
  46. "Stop that, you're just trying to make me feel better!" She whines as you pull her close. You press your face to her neck and gently kiss at her nape, making her shudder and breaking her cloud of misery, if only for a moment. "I-I don't understand... Why are you playing with my heart like this? I don't deserve this." You press her body close to yours, feeling her warmth through her clothes. She stills, before twisting around and facing you. Her emerald eyes shine even in the dim lighting of the cabin.
  47.
  48. "I don't deserve you." She's about to continue before you press your nose against hers, making her gasp and blush, her cheeks rapidly becoming redder than her eyes. "W-wha-" You close the rest of the distance and press your lips against hers, making her stiffen before wrapping her arms around you in turn.
  49.
  50. You both shed your clothes with urgency, like you're both afraid you will be torn from each others embrace. You lose yourself in her eyes, her scent, as she whispers your name before it turns into moans as you enter her. Her nails rake into your back as you kiss and bite at the skin of her neck, marking each other. You know she will cover up with her scarf later, you almost wish you can show everyone who she belongs to. You pin her to the bed like a spike through the ground as you both reach the edge and cross it, over and over again, until you both can barely move. Her cries of "I love you" filled the room until you both laid silent next to each other under the covers, and you both knew she meant it.
  51.
  52. She snuggled closer to you, bringing you out of your trance. Even with her hair a mess and her eyes still pink from tears, she looked absolutely beautiful. You rub the small of her back as she rests her head against your shoulder. No more words need to be said, the both of you cuddling as you listen to the wind rustles through the trees outside. You idly hope she won't pull any surprises, but at the same time you feel eager for her next attempt.
