  1. The planet had been terraformed. The exterminators had wiped out all life down to the smallest microorganism. The colony itself was grand in nature, with towering mountains that were once home to vast trees and vibrant flora. No, that was all gone in an instance, and would soon be home to her newest kindergarten.
  2.
  3. The thought of her essence coursing through the planet excited her! She stood upon a fine specimen, that would surely lead to the production of many a gem for centuries to come. In her gem, she knew she would pioneer the colony to greatness, just as she had been doing for millennia. Then, perhaps when she had drained the planet of all its valuable resources, would White be pleased with her.
  4.
  5. “Yellow!” Piped out an endearing voice from below her, a pair of cotton candy eyes peering up to her, “You’re doing a splendid job, I’m sure White will be very pleased with the progress you’re making with your empire. I can’t wait to tell her all about it!”
  6.
  7. All she could do was feign delight. Oh, she certainly adored Pink. Her charming nature was a much-needed refresher throughout the doom and gloom of palace life. Though, she had an air of naivety to her. One that infuriated her down to her core.
  8.
  9. She took in a sharp breath, fighting off the urge to belittle the younger diamond, “I’m sure she will.”
  10.
  11. That was a blatant lie. White could care less about what she was doing. As long as she was pumping out gems and smothering out rebellions, there was nothing that needed to be said. No praise, no endearment. Nothing, just an unspoken agreement to be nothing more than acquaintances.
  12.
  13. That wasn’t to say she lacked respect for White. Hardly, she just wished she cared more. There was nothing Yellow wanted more than for White to come out of her head and to congratulate her for her achievements. A simple ‘Good work’ would suffice; just something to encourage her to keep expanding her empire.
  14.
  15. “Oh, Yellow,” Pink cooed, climbing up onto the armrest of her gigantic throne, “You sound far from thrilled… Why?” The younger diamond asked, clinging to Yellow’s arm as though it was a piece of playground equipment.
  16.
  17. “What’s not to be thrilled about?” Yellow questioned, bring up a report of her brand new colony’s status, “The kindergartens have been developed, with my first batch of gems due to emerge in only a few cycles. The organic life is all but gone, and my Bismuths even started building some architecture. As far as I’m aware, things are just perfect.”
  18.
  19. Her monotonous voice seemed to have a sarcastic air to it. She tried not to mock Pink. No, that was the last thing she wanted. Though at times… It was difficult not to grow infuriated with her ignorance. She didn’t know the first thing about running a colony! Pink was far from the perfect leader, and even less fit to be a diamond! Ever since she emerged, she’d been coddled by White and had Earth handed to her on a silver platter.
  20. Pink never knew what it was like.
  21.
  22. The corner of her mouth tugged downwards into a frown and she shook her head in disapproval, “You wouldn’t understand, regardless. Running a colony is tedious work, and incredibly difficult. It’s a lot harder than just picking a planet and deciding you want to produce a few gems,” She let out a heavy sigh, closing down her holopad, “It’s more than just a game.”
  23.
  24. Pink took a few steps backward, her eyes shifting down, “What is that supposed to mean… Just because I have fewer colonies than you, it doesn’t mean that I don’t know how to run a colony?”
  25.
  26. Yellow let out a howl of laughter, curling her hand down into a fist and pounding it into the other armrest, “Stars, that Spinel of yours has certainly rubbed off on you! You’re even telling jokes, just like her!”
  27.
  28. Pink let out a grumble, folding her arms and tilting her head downwards in such a way that her ruffles of lilac hair covered her eyes, “White doesn’t talk to me like this… She thinks my colonies are doing well!”
  29.
  30. “And what else does White think?” Yellow narrowed her eyes, glaring daggers down at Pink, “Not much, I assume! She doesn’t care about any of us, just as long our colonies are producing more ‘perfect’ gems for her ‘perfect’ empire!”
  31.
  32. At this point, Pink’s small button eyes were welling with tears. She shook slightly, though managed to refrain herself from sobbing in front of the older diamond.
  33.
  34. “Has it ever occurred to you that the rest of us don’t get special treatment? We don’t get praise, we don’t get congratulated for a successful expedition, we don’t get to open a zoo just because we care about organic life! We have to just grin and bear it!”
  35.
  36. “That’s not true!” Pink screeched, clutching her tiny hands around her ears, as if to block out Yellow’s words, “White cares about all of us! She just doesn’t show it… She stays in her head because she’s busy ruling Homeworld!”
  37.
  38. “And what would you know about that, Pink?” Yellow spat bluntly, grabbing Pink by the arm and pushing her off the chair, “When you grow up and start acting like the Diamond you are, then maybe you’ll understand.”
  39.
  40. Yellow heard the sound of footsteps, followed by a few gentle sobs. The woosh of the airtight door opening alerted her that Pink had finally gone, and that she would be in peace.
  41.
  42. She let out a frustrated sigh, shaking her head. She truly didn’t mean to snap at Pink like that; she knew just how sensitive she could be, and the younger diamond was certainly prone to a tantrum or two. But the fact remained that she was painfully naive. Just as long as she was being spoiled by White, she could never understand her role.
  43.
  44. Pink Diamond wasn’t cut out to be a Diamond, and Yellow seemed to be the only one aware of that fact.
  45.
  46. She stood from her throne begrudgingly, taking narrow steps over to the large, hexagonal windows. She placed a firm hand to the pane of glass, staring out to her colony.
  47.
  48. Yellow knew she would be hearing from White soon. That was the only time she ever really heard from the senior diamond; to scold her for upsetting Pink.
  49.
  50. In one swift motion, her hand knotted into a fist, and she struck the window with all the force she could muster. Instantly, the pane shattered into several shards of glass, all now littered against the floor like specks of stardust.
  51.
  52. White would never care about her, and Yellow had to live with that fact.
  53.
  54. She let out an airy sigh, “Pink… Why do you make me feel this way?”
  55.
  56. With the sense of despair that came with losing a battle, Yellow took her seat at her throne once again. This time, she was alone, and ever so cold within the confines of her room-- tt was a sense of isolation she had come to know all too well.
  57.
  58. But perhaps it was better like that. Perhaps it was Yellow who wasn't fit to be a Diamond.
