- First Tuesday update; Where we are now, Non-Raw notes
- by Dave Meltzer

- It's back to the drawing board I guess.
- There is plenty of finger pointing going on after last night's debacle. In what is the most important angle in the history of this industry to be a success, it has been one stubbed toe after another. And last night's really hurt. Pointing out the problems going in are easy. WCW had a loser stigma because of most of what it did over the last 18 months of its existence. WWF fans were conditioned to hate WCW, even during the period when WCW was the hotter promotion and put out a better product. WCW fans gave up about the second or third week after its company went out of business. Anyone who followed the demise of Roller Derby from its heyday in 1971-72 to it falling off the cliff of popularity after the folding of Derby at the end of 1973 can see history, and the same mistakes, being repeated.
- What do I mean by this? In San Francisco, there was a huge Roller Derby tradition and the home team was known as the Bay Bombers. The Bombers were possibly the most popular sports franchise in the country at that point (Hey, Frank Deford, who was one of the country's leading sportswriters said it) because EVERYBODY that watched Derby, which had phenomenal ratings, rooted for the Bombers. They were, basically, in that universe, the World Wrestling Federation. There were components of the team, the stars, the biggest ones being Charlie O'Connell and Joanie Weston. Derby outgrew San Francisco and expanded, and to have known babyfaces in the new markets, the Bombers were split up, with its stars going to various new home franchises, most notably a team in Chicago called the Pioneers (Weston) and the New York Chiefs, co-owned by Madison Square Garden itself (led by O'Connell). The Bombers were then sold to a group out of Texas, which quickly went belly-up. The next season (Derby was a summer seasonal deal in the Bay Area), with the Bombers weakened, the decision was made to return with the Chiefs, since they had O'Connell, the biggest star, as the home team, re-naming them, for the summer, the Northern California Cheifs or some such name. It failed within a month, and soon, they had to restructure, bring back the Bombers, and had a mysterious trade to send O'Connell back. At the end of 1973, Roller Derby folded. The expansion didn't work. The competitor, Roller Games, based out of Los Angeles, remained. Like with the WWF, they absorbed the top stars of Derby and at first it was like everyone's dream, because adding the Derby stars to the Roller Games stars made every team almost like an all-star team. The Games flagship team, their version of the Bay Bombers, were the Los Angeles Thunderbirds. They put O'Connell, Weston and all the Bomber favorites in a T-Bird uniform. Quite frankly, the new squad was more loaded than the Bombers ever were. For the first month or two, these loaded teams drew huge crowds and even though they had to mesh styles (the two games were altogether different to most serious fans even though outsiders coudn't tell the difference, similar to WCW and WWF style), it seemed like things couldn't be better. In that sense, it opened far stronger than this thing is going. But it soon fell apart. The "Games" fans didn't like the more sport like atmosphere and less chaos of the mixed game. The "Derby" fans didn't like the theatrics that their game didn't have. Ultimately, in places like Chicago and San Francisco, the T-Birds, even using the biggest stars of the folded local teams, stopped drawing. It turned out the audiences for each side was different and wanted different, and remember, neither audience at any time had years of training to hate the other version. They didn't like it, because after a month, it just didn't feel right and it wasn't fun, for either group of fans, and ultimately, Games followed Derby on the quick road to extinction.
- I wouldn't waste time on this if it wasn't all happening again. WWF fans have been trained to hate WCW. WCW fans were half run off and the other half were given the boot two months ago and even if they do come back out of curiosity, that's all it will be. They won't like the new style and they won't stay. This can be salvaged, like WCW was in 1996, by creating and appealing to a new audience without those pre-conceived notions, but that's going to be difficult when the prevailing audience is so negative. Right now, correctly done, there can be tremendous short-term business in WCW as a heel group, albiet with bigger stars needed and bigger pushes in scripting and more heat added, going against WWF, as evidenced by the strong face reaction Steve Austin and Kurt Angle got last night. But that isn't the plan and the plan is to mix and match rosters. They have their work cut out in that regard, overcoming the stigma of the name. Ultimately, in theory their plan is the best, because by having wrestlers exclusive to one show, it solves the overexposure problem.
- WWF and WCW were a different product. WCW attracted an older audience that was more into fast-paced wrestling. Except when WCW was on its downward slide or during its periods of total creative depression, what was notable about WCW was that fewer people bought tickets, but those that did, made far more noise during the matches themselves. Even during the period where Vince McMahon started turning WWF back around after its nadir, the crowd reactions for WCW's matches, and that company was already being booked into oblivion, were stronger than WWF, where, whether it be its glory days of the 80s or the late 90s, people used to remark how the crowd popped for ring entrances and died once the bell rang, until they recognized somebody doing their signature finisher. This is not saying one style was better than the other per se, just they were different. I guess, WWF style wasn't necessarily better, but it was promoted better, because they are the ones who are still in business.
- Trying to get over WCW Raw, and WCW house shows, will be the biggest challenge of Vince McMahon's career. Watch back a tape of week one of the XFL. Then watch last night's WCW match. There is only once chance to make a first impression, and delaying the debut of WCW was smart until everything was in order. But they didn't delay long enough. They needed to debut with a match that would make a statement. Booker T was borderline for such a position. Buff Bagwell wasn't even in the game. The announcers were thrown together at the last minute, and it showed. Now in a month, the talent list for WCW will be altogether different from what it is today. But the stigma of the name will exist until it delivers a kick ass product for long enough that people are forced to admit it's good, because they won't give it a break. As bad as that match was, even if it were two guys out there delivering a good match, the crowd was going to reject it. And that's scary. It's like that second week of the XFL, when they had that incredible game, and then the rating for the third week tumbled anyway. That was when you realized even if the product is good, the marketplace has made up its collective mind.
- But the crowd reactions, and the performance of Buff Bagwell, are masking the real blame here. This feud has been written poorly. WCW needed to get some big heat immediately. The DDP-Undertaker confrontation was a disaster at the PPV. Yes, DDP is not the star they are pushing him to be and never was in WCW either. He was a hard working guy who was put into a good position in a hot company and whatever he got over was more a guy along for the ride as opposed to a guy, like Steve Austin or even Mick Foley, who created their own wave. Then the company wasn't hot, and he headlined some of the worst drawing PPV events for a national company in history. But every WCW talent is a fresh face. Page was immediately portrayed as ineffective against a WWF star like Undertaker. As entertaining as the Smackdown angle with Chuck Palumbo and Sean O'Haire was, and had WCW gotten three or four instances of mega-heat leading into it, perhaps it wouldn't have even been ill-advised, but because the fans in MSG popped for it doesn't make it a good angle for building the big picture. By last night, it was hilarious. Granted, the list of one-time headliners on the WCW side are thin, and while they could have put, early in the show as opposed to the main event position where the reaction was likely to be worse, a hot cruiserweight match, which would have been better action, but the crowd wasn't going to accept that either. But putting Buff Bagwell in that position? What were they thinking? And to get the feud over, they booked a five minute match with no finish. They needed a very good match to get Booker T over clean, the title belt over strong, and then after the pinfall, they could have done the same run-in the exact same way. Granted, it probably wouldn't have worked to that audience either, but at least it wasn't as flawed inherently as what was put together.
- Between all the often entertaining skits, and some that aren't entertaining, this feud is the single most important thing in pro wrestling. Simply put, this business is either going to go down fast, like history suggests, whether it be regional history of Montreal, Detroit or the Crockett purchase of UWF, or Roller Derby. Or, WWF can use this to create badly needed new headliners and freshen up its product, which can rebound things. The choice is up to them, and the audience. But a complete evaluation of what this is and where this is going needs to be done.
- Again, the WWF vs. WCW feud really isn't the long-term as in the pure feud. They gave up on that idea when the plan was made to mix rosters. This current month is just a way to expose the new talent and get the brand name over before embarking on the real game, which starts in August and becomes really important in the fall when they have to sell tickets to house shows and PPVs with the WCW name.
- But there are so many problems. Shane's entrance music. Shane's dancing. Shane's interviews. Oh, and Shane as the focal point. The problem is, right now there are ways to manipulate this program into making WCW a strong heel adversary to WWF, and if enough heat is put on, it can work. However, the current plan is to position it to where it's a separate organization needing to sell tickets on its own. That is so much more difficult. Having said all that, until the sides are picked, it's hard to say what needs to be done. Only that what has been done so far has not worked for building this thing long-term on every level.
- --We should have a report from Bryan Alvarez later tonight in the Smackdown tapings from Tacoma. If you are attending the show and have comments you can send them to dave@wrestlingobserver.com
- The latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter will be previewed later today. We run down what happened last night, how things came together, why things didn't happen and a lot of behind the scenes information on the announcing situation, the Invasion PPV, what the WWF annual and quarterly business report says, as well as a review of New Japan's two-hour television special from last week featuring a Wrestlemania-calibre series of matches. The Observer is the No. 1 insider pro wrestling publication in the world and is available by sending to P.O. Box 1228, Campbell, CA 95009-1228. Rates in the U.S. are $11 for 4 weekly issues, $28 for 12, $54 for 24 and $90 for 40. In Canada and Mexico it is $12 for 4, $30 for 12, $57 for 24 and $95 for 40. In Europe you can send for quickest delivery and best rates to grapplingaction@aol.com. For the rest of the world it's $14 for 4, $36 for 12, $72 for 24 and $120 for 40.
- Wrestling Observer Live today will actually be a taped show due to the holiday. The scheduled interview with Oleg Taktarov has been postponed. We also will be off tomorrow, with a replay of an excellent show with former WCW writer Bob Mould. We'll return live on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. Eastern and 2-4 p.m. Pacific time. We'll have a lot to catch up on by that time. You can always check out archives at http://www.eyada.com with many of the biggest names in wrestling.
- --Only a few non-Raw matches last night in Tacoma. The only matches were Tony Kozina b Buddy Wayne in a very good match which was dark, plus Raven & Jerry Lynn b Kaientai and Billy Gunn b K-Kwik. It only appeared the latter match was taped for Metal/Jakked. (thanks to Brian Wescott and Charles Fischer)
- --Last night Real Action Wrestling from Cocagne, New Brunswick before 150-175 fans: Eddie Watts b Buddy Lane, Wildman Williams DCOR Mike Hughes, Massive Damage b Corporal Chaos, Acadian Giant (Kurrgan) b Kingman-DQ, Bobby Rude b Chi Chi Cruz to win heavyweight title. Wildman Williams used to be Wildman Austin. Can't figure out who his favorite wrestler must be (thanks to Joe Denis)
- --We should have ratings up soon. 80% of the major programming last night was reruns and nothing drew any sort of ratings.
- --Time Magazine this week has a cover story on "America' s Best Artists and Entertainers." In a section on the best fringe entertainers, they listed as "America's Best Wrestling Personality - Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley. It was meant tongue in cheek because clearly the writers weren't wrestling fans.

- First Wednesday update; Lengthy editorial on the state of the union and a book that needs to be commissioned
- by Dave Meltzer
- Dave@wrestlingobserver.com
- Pretty quiet morning. Don't forget to join Bryan Alvarez and myself for two hours of the best wrestling talk anywhere with Wrestling Observer Live from 5-7 p.m. Eastern time and 2-4 p.m. Pacific time at http://www.eyada.com. We remained this past week the No. 1 rated internet generated talk show in the United States. You can call the show at 1-877-392-3299 to talk about any aspect of pro wrestling, MMA or whatever or send e-mails during the show to davemeltzer@eyada.com. We'll be joined by Frankie Kazarian of UPW. Tomorrow, live from San Jose (not on the phone) will be Frank Shamrock while Friday we have trainer, promoter, former wrestler, announcer and talk show host Les Thatcher, who is probably one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry with his 40 years experience and the fact he keeps up with modern wrestling.
- This is so weird writing that after a show that did a 4.5 rating in a building that was sold out. But then again, in 1998, WCW was coming off a strong of 23 straight sellouts, and the vibe was exactly the same. As someone who lived through the collapse of Roller Derby, which closed its doors some 14 months after drawing 50,118 fans to a game in Chicago, and just recently the collapse of ECW and WCW, there is one thing about sports entertainment. You can't rest on your laurels. The public can turn on you in an instant. Jim Crockett was on fire in 1986. He was out of business by the end of 1988. Bill Watts did unbelievable business in 1985. He was out of business in early 1987.
- This is not the prediction of the demise of a company that will gross more than $400 million this year. This is just an illustration of how quickly things change. We are less than two months away from the biggest event in the history of this industry. It is understandable that coming off something so big, there will be a lull. But anyone who follows this closely knows that since the demise of WCW, what is happening to all facets of the business is not a typical post-big show lull.
- I don't want to see a repeat of WCW. I don't understand why I'm seeing it. From January through March, Raw and Smackdown presented some excellent TV shows. Granted, ratings were starting a decline. Smackdown got hit hard by Survivor. Raw was on a downward trend. But arena business was very good, only slightly off last year's record pace. PPV business was very strong, in particular No Way Out was a huge success and Mania broke all records.
- If you study this industry, you'll find that every company has its up and down cycles. A charismatic person, or group, comes to the fore, and catches on with the public. It could be Antonio Inoki, Hulk Hogan, The Crush Gals, Konnan & Vampiro, Steve Austin, Rock, Bruno Sammartino, a new concept or just plain old fashioned a bunch of really top notch guys hitting their prime at the same time and putting on excellent shows. It never lasts forever. The best time to prepare for the future is when ratings are at the highest and casual interest is on top. And usually, because things are so good, that's usually the time companies think they are on a roll that will never end. Even when it ends, excuses start being made rather than making the needed changes. And then, it's too late.
- WCW missed the boat. WWF missed that boat. The one positive about WWF is that with their developmental territories, they are better prepared for the future. WCW had some prospects at the Power Plant, but they were put on television too fast and shoved down people's throats before they had the charisma. There was no transition between the gym and Nitro, except for maybe in a few cases, a Japanese tour or matches on WCW Saturday night.
- The saddest thing is not learning the lessons from the mistakes of others. The WWF, coming off the XFL fiasco, if nothing else realizes that the Midas touch and marketing genius labels are great on paper and from adoring fans, but the reality is, like life, it's all about luck and timing, and having the knowledge and creativity doesn't hurt, but nobody is so smart or creative that they can truly make chicken salad out of a product that the public doesn't want.
- In September of 1999, after Eric Bischoff was removed and a few weeks before WCW hired Vince Russo, who promptly destroyed the foundation of the company and its PPV and house show business, speeding its extinction process, WCW was still capable of turning it around. The initial reaction to Russo showed the fans were there, and were ready to support a good product. Instead, they got a horrible product, and it slowly died.
- The look of this industry and the style of matches and television always change. But the foundation of the business is the same today as it was when Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt drew 28,000 fans in Chicago during days when there was no television, no radio, and few automobiles. You promote and build two stars up huge to the point the public wants to see which one really is better. Whether it's Rogers and O'Connor, Funk and Brisco, Flair and Von Erich, Hogan and Andre or Rock and Austin. The personalities need to be strong, and they need to be personalities with some consistency in that in some form or fashion, the public thinks they know them and they feel strongly, whether they like or hate them is irrelevant as long as they care with a passion. Every time you turn a character, you remove a little of their consistency and take away some of the fans' passion. At times, you have to make the turn when a personality gets stale or when you have the right storyline and times need to be changed.
- In theory, the Austin turn made sense. Rock was younger. They could do a record house without a turn, but to do it again, a turn would be better. But there was the consistency of the character issue. Most of the current fan base came to be WWF fans during Austin-mania over the past three years. No, he was no longer at his peak as far as selling t-shirts. He'd gone from the superstar at his peak, to the icon that the people believe in. The turn was a risk, because of the Ric Flair syndrome. Ric Flair can play a great heel. But he got to the point in his career where people liked him so much, they didn't want to boo him. Every time WCW turned Flair, its ratings dropped and its arena attendance did as well, particularly in the Carolinas. Check out the last few gates of WCW with Flair as a heel in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Those should be the cities that Flair would never stop drawing in since they were no longer weekly cities, only came a few times a year, and he was part of local pop culture. What nobody in WCW seemed to understand was the obvious. Nobody in those cities wanted to pay $25 or more to have to half-ass boo Flair. Austin, due to the television being so strong and being the right guy in the right place at the right time, was Ric Flair in Charlotte, except in every city, from New York to Chicago to LA to SF to Philly. WWF only comes to the markets in most cases a few times a year. You see it every night. People want to cheer Austin, and they won't pay money to boo him, and aren't really thrilled at this point watching him. The same thing would have happened with Bill Goldberg, except that turn was such a disaster they gave up on it and he was back as a face, without any kind of a reason, and was dead as a draw from that point forward. There has to be one guy the public believes in, and he's the one you can't turn until you've got a new one. The Austin turn would have been more successful if Rock was on television every week and at the arenas every week. In time, he'll be back on television, but nobody knows for how long, or how available he'll be for arenas. Or how people will take him, as a guy who drops in and out between movies. He could be bigger than ever. Or he could be so big that he's never around except for PPVs and when the top guy stops doing house shows what happens. Check out your WCW house show history for the answer.
- Since the extinction of WCW, it has felt, after an incredible Wrestlemania, like it was Raw that has vanished and that somehow, Nitro and Thunder have continued under new names with all new characters but with the same style of writing. Three minute run-in DQ main events with the same guys over-and-over. The famous glass ceiling. Storylines requiring acting ability, exposing the talent for its weaknesses in that form of acting, not to mention increasing the "bullshit, click" quotient when fans can't in some form relate or get hooked on the storyline. For all the talk of elevation, when the WWF was on fire last July, and even then they couldn't pull the trigger to elevate anyone, all of the guys that everyone mentions were drawing ratings in TV main events and fans were waiting for them to take that big step. Those same guys are typecast as midcarders today and if they are given that big break, the odds are they'd become the scapegoats of what appears at this point to be an inevitable decline.
- There are bright sides. Interpromotional angles usually work big. Even when not done correctly, and few are done correctly because ego seemingly always gets in the way of business. For example, if there is a big money match on the horizon, what would it be? Probably Bill Goldberg against either Rock or Steve Austin. Now, Goldberg may never be available. It's hardly a stretch to think he's very content with everyone's dream job of making $2 million plus and be on a 28 months vacation. But if he's not, Scott Steiner, who does want to work in WWF, is available. When WWF thought they weren't using him, they beat him for the title, but nobody remembers that anyway. And Steiner has his question marks, like his temper and whether at close to 40 with major back problems and a history of injuries, he could hold up on a hard schedule. But will Undertaker and HHH when the time comes, allow Steiner to run through them like a charging bull, with no "getting heat back" muffling of the push, to build him for the real money matches? Would they for Goldberg? If the answer is anything but yes, gladly, then the program will not reach its potential and there is major trouble on the horizon.
- But that's a year from now, if it ever happens. For now, this business needs a battle plan and changes in hierarchy and a few changes in presentation. Usually we can look to Japan or Mexico or indies or ECW for new concepts, but no such luck today. Japan is so lacking in new that they are copying our bad ideas. Mexico is so lacking in new that unlike WWF, which is presenting the same three guys in main events as it did in 1999, they're presenting the same main eventers as in 1989. So in that way, unlike in September 1999 when wrestling was still hot but one company was shooting itself in the foot with bad shows and it probably could have been turned around with a little patience, reversing this is going to take a little more skill as well as the same patience. There is a very scary thing about the switch from "fake sport" to "television show." In the sports genre, whether real or not, sports all have their ups and downs, but the major sports, whether they be hockey or boxing or basketball, have been around for 50 years and will be around in some form in 30 years. The best written prime time television shows are lucky to last seven or eight years total before the writers burn out and the public tires of the characters..
- Like with WCW, the company desperately needs a new star in the mix. Perhaps a new hot character like a main event manager, it's old, but it's been years since we've seen one used effectively, to speak for guys and get heat for them as they do their stuff in the ring. But there is no Bobby Heenan to be stolen. That's about the only savior at this point for a Chris Benoit if he is ever to make it as a true headliner. Kurt Angle needs a jump-start with a program with one of the top guys where he gets serious heat on them or he'll be typecast as a supporting player. Starting next Monday after this program runs its course. But it will be a lot easier to go with someone who isn't tainted with the label of being a supporting character. Wrestling has one wonderful luxury that no other sport has. It can create its own Tiger Woods, and he never has to lose if it isn't in their best interest. With Rock in the movies, Austin in question and Goldberg on the sidelines, and nobody else near ready, the answer isn't easy. But just remember one thing, the Lex Express may have been remembered as one of the great marketing failures of the WWF, but that was only because they picked the wrong guy. An even bigger failure would have been to not try. Fans are spoiled here, like in Japan, by the sheer greatness of some of the recent headliners on the stick, as the Japanese fans are spoiled by the level of play that the wrestlers of today, now past their prime, were hitting in the mid-90s.
- WCW needs to start up, whenever they are ready, with a long-term battle plan. Business as usual for a company that is starting out being pulled from the grave is no answer. And unfortunately, WCW's true strength, the smaller guys, have been devalued in the minds of the consumers to the point that it doesn't matter how well they perform in the ring, the audience was appreciative of it isn't watching for the most part and the fans that are left don't pay attention to it.
- As someone who saw first hand what happened in 1992-95 when business was dead, while things are so much better now financially than they were in 1992, long-term, there are far stronger warning signs than there were then. Another difference is that during those years, while the casual audience fell greatly, the hardcore base stayed strong and they were the ones who supported the business until the promotional war excited the masses and brought the buzz to Mondays. Now, sadly, it's the hardcore fans, who are losing interest.
- Probably the best advice for now for the WWF writers are to think about this from a fan perspective and remember, the key is two things. Build up matches people want to see, more often than not, in a manner they've never seen before. Austin vs. Undertaker doesn't fit that bill. It's okay to do it, as an age old rivalry, but no unless something new and fresh is a co-headliner. Make TV fun. Characters with their catch-phrases and comedy sketches, mixed with seriousness on top. There is a certain "fun" charm that was lacking from WCW, and has been lacking of late in WWF. End the TV on a hot note. A 3:00 DQ and leaving the heels with heat is not a hot note. If the main event doesn't look like a great match on paper, chances are, it won't be a great match. After fans have been spoiled by week-after-week of great TV main events, they aren't going to be satisfied with bad ones. Also, pay attention to the numbers. How many companies have gone broke listening to entrance music pops, which can be determined simply by a cool song, while people stopped paying to see the characters. The box office right now is telling a message. It's clear. A new top babyface that the fans believe in who is entertaining to watch needs to be created. Undertaker and Kane are too dark and too old to be in that position. Another false turn by HHH will just muffle things more when the time comes that they actually pull the trigger. Remember all those NWO false-turn storylines on TV. And then remember, when they finally pulled the trigger on those turns, nobody paid to see them. It's hard enough when fans know it's all a show to suspend disbelief strongly enough to get strongly into characters. It's impossible when the characters change so often that they don't have time, or faith that their patience in the character overcoming the odds won't end with that character then telling them it's all been a swerve. You've lived with our struggle. You've sympathized with it. But it all meant nothing in the end because guess what, the last season was all a dream and none of what you cared about, we even remember or acknowledge. Sorry nobody has written the book on the inside story of the death of WCW, but Vince McMahon needs to hire someone to write it, and made it required reading for everyone in decision making power, and as soon as they see any similarities, recognize them before it's too late. Too many of us already recognize them, and it's a memory that is no fun re-living.
- --"Didn't you used to be" Rena Mero starts an advice column tomorrow on Compuserve.
- --New Jack and Horace Hogan will be the headliners on the NWA West Virginia/Ohio TV tapings on 6/22 in Parkersburg, WV at the City Park Pavilion.

- As best I know at this point, we are scheduled to have Ken Shamrock tonight on Wrestling Observer Live from 5-7 p.m. Eastern time and 2-4 p.m. Pacific time as our guest on Wrestling Observer Live. Bryan Alvarez and myself will also be running down last night's Raw with our comments, as well as commenting on all the latest pro wrestling news. You can listen in live, or at any time 24 hours a day at your convenience at http://www.eyada.com. You can call in during those hours at 1-877-392-3299 or e-mail during those two hours with any questions for us or for Ken Shamrock at davemeltzer@eyada.com. Bruno Sammartino will be our guest tomorrow, with Chris "Crowbar" Ford on Thursday and Kris Pope, author of "The Encyclopedia of Professional Wrestling: 100 Years of the Good, the Bad and the Collectible," which comes out next month, as our guest on Friday. Shelton Benjamin, who was scheduled for last Thursday, has been rescheduled for early next month.
- --We should have some ratings up later today, but due to Easter, I'm not sure what ratings will and won't be available. There didn't seem to be anything major last night on the overnights that should negatively affect the Raw number. Everyone Loves Raymond was in reruns, but still pulled an 11.4 on the overnights, while a new Becker did a 10.2 and a new Ally McBeel did an 8.7.
- --The opponent on Metal/Jakked last night in Knoxville for K-Kwik was Race Steele (Craig Zellner) of the Heartland Wrestling Association. Got a decent amount of feedback regarding the OVW guys on the show, with many saying they had some of the best matches on the show. And last night's Raw had more good wrestling on it than any of the recent TV shows. Reports were that Brock Lesnar's shooting star press totally blew people away

- Decent amount of response to the closing angle last night. Perhaps the most scary was the realization that WWF may have made a horrible tactical error in light of the Eunick case (a guy twice the size beating to death a girl) because this footage could be used by a media source, obviously not saying one caused the other, but saying the WWF hasn't learned and didn't care about the case. I didn't think of this, but considering the beating up of women is already not allowed (albeit in very inconsistent fashion) on some of the networks Raw is designed for in the first place, that if something were to come up, they would have a very difficult time justifying their position.

- Not a lot of big news since, aside from the NOAH show, there was no major wrestling to speak of yesterday. WWF is back tonight with Raw, headlined by Jeff Hardy vs. HHH, live from Knoxville. We're looking for any live reports from people attending the show regarding dark and syndicated matches as well as other things that may have been missing from the TV broadcast at dave@wrestlingobserver.com

- Don't forget to join Bryan Alvarez and myself for Wrestling Observer Live today from 5-7 p.m. Eastern time and 2-4 p.m. Pacific time at http://www.eyada.com. This will be the last show this week without a guest so we'll be able to take your e-mails and phone calls the entire two hours. We've got a ton of news to discuss, as last night's Raw got a tremendous amount of reaction. Unfortunately it was the sad kind. Tomorrow we'll be joined by Frankie Kazarian of UPW, Thursday by Frank Shamrock and Friday by Les Thatcher in talking about the current scene.
- Also, we're already overloaded with news and analysis in next week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter including what will likely be the most comprehensive review of Mick Foley's book, "Foley is Good." What's good, bad and fun about the book. The Observer, the premiere insider pro wrestling publication is available at P.O. Box 1228, Campbell, CA 95009-1228. $11 for 4 weekly issues, $28 for 12, $54 for 24 and $90 for 40 in the United States. Canada and Mexico is $12 for 4, $30 for 12, $57 for 24 and $95 for 40. Rest of the world is $14 for 4, $36 for 12, $72 for 24 and $120 for 40 issues. If you live in Europe, for the best rates and quickest delivery you can subscribe at grapplingaction@aol.com
- --Future of Wrestling on Saturday night in Davie, FL before 969 fans : Phi Delta Slam & Maximum Capacity b Suicidal Tendencies & Bobby Brooks, Wet Willie b Shred, Jon Elias b Pat McGuire, Vandlaz b Market Crashers, Heavenly Bodies (Chris Nelson & Vito DeNucci) won Battle Royal, Jeff Roth & Chris Charger b Al Bino & Anthony Michaels to win FOW tag titles, Billy Fives won three-way over Mike Sullivan and Scoot Andrews to win FOW title, Dave Johnson b Jerry Lawler (thanks to Mister Saint Laurent)
- --As of the last word I've heard, the Yoshihiro Takayama vs. Kazuyuki Fujita Pride main event is still on.
- --The radio station in Louisville promoting tonight's Smackdown tapings announced that Rock would be returning for the show. I don't know if this is actually accurate or not and nobody has verified it to me thus far. It is confirmed that in a dark match, B.J. Payne & Damien defend the OVW Southern tag titles against Brock Lesnar & Shelton Benjamin on this show. We should have tons of reports later tonight on the card. If you are attending, you can send us a report at dave@wrestlingobserver.com. (thanks to Chad Schepers)
