  2. >Far away in a sea of sand, a pony stands high atop a balcony.
  3. >A light breeze blows through his dark brown mane and light grey coat giving some relief from the heat.
  4. >The endless desert of Saddle Arabia extends itself for miles on end.
  5. >An old cobblestone road snakes through this dry ocean two separate ways.
  6. >West leads to the coast where the war rages.
  7. >There he pictures the destruction and carnage being fought over.
  8. >Where the blood and sweat of each nation falls with the determination to dominate the other.
  9. >The Equestrians have already overtaken much of the small provinces and are moving their way inland.
  10. >To the East the old road leads to the capitol, Meccaspia.
  11. >Where the Sultan sits on his thrown of salt and sand.
  12. >With each passing day, the harsh winds of change erode what little power he has.
  13. >It takes a three weeks journey to get to this fortress from either side.
  14. >Being this far out in the desert, the fighting shouldn't spread here for a long time.
  15. >A knock comes from behind.
  16. "Enter."
  17. >In walks a large Saddle Arabian wearing heavy chain mail.
  18. >An iron helmet shields his face from sight and a tabar is slung across his back.
  19. >In an awkward accent he speaks.
  20. >"Excuse me Doctor. My men gathered all that you requested and are ready to begin."
  21. >The grey coated pony gives out a sigh and still stares into the endless desert.
  22. >He focuses his sight on two little dots far away in the sky.
  23. >There the outline of ponies can be barely seen.
  24. >Pegasus Scouts.
  25. >A smile creeps across his face.
  26. “Very good Captain, I’ll be down in a moment.”
  27. >”One more thing Sir, a delegate from the capitol is here. He wants to make a detailed report abo-“
  28. “Say no more, show him and his entourage to the guest rooms and bring them some food and water. I will deal him later. Oh and make preparations for others.”
  29. >“Others?”
  30. “More guests are on the way and I would hate to be ‘unprepared’ for their welcome as well.”
  31. >”Yes Sir.”
  32.
  33. ***
  34.
  35. >A pegasus wearing heavy plate armor makes his way towards the center of camp.
  36. >A tent is stationed there along with a great flag pole that’s now raising the Equestrian national banner.
  37. >Two giant Earth ponies stand with spears at the ready just outside it.
  38. >Seeing him, one of them opens the flap letting him in.
  39. >Inside the tent sits a middle aged stallion with his back to the pegasus.
  40. “General Strider Sir. You sent for me?”
  41. >Hearing the voice, General Strider turns around and greets the pony.
  42. >”Captain Roadwind, I am pleased you were able to come at such short notice.”
  43. “When duty calls Sir, we always answer.”
  44. >”That’s what I like to hear. Take a seat.”
  45. >As Roadwind sits in one of the available chairs, General Strider brings out some documents and a couple glasses.
  46. >”Drink?”
  47. “No thank you Sir.”
  48. >”A pony of business I see.”
  49. >Setting the glasses back into his desk he motions his hoof to the documents.
  50. >”As you well know, we are making unimaginable progress against the enemy. We’ve taken control over the many ports and established a strong beachhead with supply lines stretching all the way to the front. Many predict this war will be over by this years end.”
  51. >Roadwind simply nods at the statement.
  52. >”However there’s two main cities and two dozen or so forts in between us and the capitol, with over two-hundred thousand or so soldiers and militias stationed there as well. There’s going to be a lot of fighting and a lot of death for both sides.”
  53. “That’s how war is Sir.”
  54. >”Well that’s not how I want it!”
  55. >He slams his hoof on the table.
  56. >”Intelligence discovered an old trade road just South of here that can take us directly to Meccaspia."
  57. Roadwind gets up from his seat and looks at the map Strider has.
  58. "Strategizing a siege after a long march through the desert that extensive would be almost impossible."
  59. >"With the proper logistics, we will be able to circumnavigate the entirety of the Saddle Arabian forces and be done with this war within the next two months.”
  60. “That sounds like a marvelous idea, so why hasn’t it been put into effect?”
  61. >General Strider looks away in disgust.
  62. >”That’s the thing, all the scout teams we have sent never returned. I fear sending regular infantry would just cause more problems.”
  63. “So you want me and my team to clear the way for the main contingency.”
  64. >”Precisely! And hopefully find out what happened to our missing scouts if possible.”
  65. “Do we at least know how long it takes to travel? I’d hate to lead my squad into the desert only to die of thirst.”
  66. >"From what maps we have seized, we hope it should be a two week journey, but there have been some inconsistencies.”
  67. "Inconsistencies?"
  68. >"Some say a few weeks, others say a month. Some don't even acknowledge its existence. When we questioned the locals, many seemed...unsettled. We practically had to pull teeth from prisoners to get the information we have. And that still leaves us plenty in the dark. What is consistent is that it leads to the Capital. At the halfway mark there are sketches of a sanctuary, maybe even a fort. It might've been used as a spot to refuel for supplies. That is where we suspect the scouts disappeared at."
  69. “Well that sounds perfect. Waking up today I thought to myself I could use a month long nature walk.”
  70. >”Captain, this mission is of the utmost importance. If you succeed you will be saving thousands of lives.”
  71. “When should we depart?”
  72. >”That is not up to me.”
  73. “If not you Sir, then who?”
  74. >”That would be me.”
  75. >Behind Roadwind in walks a unicorn with a reddish-brown coat and a short shaven black mane.
  76. >His collar from a fancy button up shirt peaks out over his light leather armor.
  77. >”I’m Special Agent Copper of the Ministry of Interior Defense. I will be traveling with you and your team.”
  78.
  79. "A pleasure Agent Copper, may I ask how you came to know of this 'highway' of ours?"
  80. >"That's classified I'm afraid, and that goes double for this mission. What I wouldn't mind is for you to gather your team. I will give you a briefing on what to expect in a couple hours in the Conference Tent, now if you will excuse us me and General need to discuss some private matters."
  81. >Giving a salute Roadwind takes his leave.
  82. "Prick."
  83. >Going back to the barracks, he finds only two members of his squad.
  84. >An Earth Pony is snoring loudly on one of the cots while a pegasus sits with his back to him, silently cleaning his spear.
  85. >Without looking the spear-man speaks.
  86. >"Hello Captain. What is our next mission?"
  87. "Light Specter, I see you're cognizance hasn't diminished."
  88. >...

  94. >...
  95. >"A blessing-"
  96. >A loud grunt and a snort from the stallion in the bed interrupts him.
  97. >*Nostril exhale*"-and a curse in some ways."
  98. >He begins to try and jab the sleeping stallion with the pole end of his spear.
  99. >"Onyx. Onyx! Wake up!"
  100. >Onyx simply brushes the pole away and turns over.

  106. >...
  107. >"Lazy drunk."
  108. >Roadwind gives out a chuckle at the situation.
  109. "Let him rest another half-hour. If he's not up by then you have my permission to dump a bucket of water on him."
  110. >Specter gives a sly smile and a nod and returns to shining his spear.
  111. >"The others are probably at the tavern. Onyx and I will arrive on time in the Conference Tent so you won't have to worry about us."
  112. "Oh and another thing, have you seen where-"
  113. >Roadwind stares dumbfounded at the pegasus who now has his back to him again.
  114. >He gives another small chuckle to himself and heads out towards the bar.
  115.
  116. >As Roadwind enters through the swivel doors, he is immediately washed into the crowd of revelry.
  117. >Cheers and toasting come all around from the soldiers resting after the hard won battle.
  118. >All trying to live it up before being shipped out East again for another huge battle.
  119. >Trying to see through the crowd, he spots Velvet Ace playing darts with a couple other somewhat sober soldiers.
  120. "Velvet!"
  121. >The outburst, although muffled by the sounds of the bar, shocked Velvet enough into throwing the dart hard into the wall next to the dart board.
  122. >As she turns towards the source of the distraction, she suppresses her anger at the sight of her superior.
  123. >...

  130. >"Just having a nice friendly game with the regulars."
  131. >She gives an awkward smile as if trying to hide something.
  132. >A burly Earth Pony walks up behind her.
  133. >"Hey! Where's my money unicorn? Deal's a deal!"
  134. >...
  135. Gambling Problem.
  136. >...
  137. >"I..erm..."
  138. >Roadwind steps between the two.
  139. "Gambling is prohibited Private."
  140. >The Earth Pony slinks back seeing Roadwind's higher rank.
  141. "Is what I would say if we were on base in Equestria."
  142. >Roadwind reaches a hoof into his pocket and gives the Private a small bag of bits.
  143. "Enjoy your victory soldier. That's an order."
  144. >With a relieving sigh and a nod, the soldier takes the bag and returns to the others who are now setting up another game.
  145. >"Sorry about that Captain."
  146. "Sorry shmaury, you're on double duty at the latrines when we get back."
  147. >"Get back?"
  148. "New orders, there will be a briefing in a couple hours in the Conference Tent. Do you know where Metal and Spark are?"
  149. >Velvet puts a hoof to her chin in contemplation.
  150. >"Um...Last I saw them they were-"
  151. >"AND HERE'S TO THE BRAVE GELDINGS WHO KNOCKED OUT THOSE CANONS AND MORTAR PITS!"
  152. >Roadwind turns to see the last two squad members standing on a stage.
  153. >Along with a very soused regular combatant.
  154. >A roar of cheers and applause comes from everypony in the room followed by them turning their mugs topsy-turvy.
  155. >Roadwind gives out an annoyed grunt.
  156. "Go and get ready, I'll get them."
  157. >As Velvet leaves the tavern, Roadwind begins making his way to the front of the stage.
  158. >Marble Metal is standing on his hind legs while holding his forehoof around the soused soldier.
  159. >"AND LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GREATEST ARMY IN THE WORLD! THE GRIFFONS CAN'T MATCH US! THE DOGS SCURRY AWAY IN FEAR AT OUR SIGHT! AND SOON THESE DESERT DWELLING HAS-BEEN'S SHALL BE BESTED BY US!"

  167. >While inching his way closer to the front, somepony almost spills their cider atop Roadwind.
  168. >To his relief they catch themselves at the last second and quickly gulp it down.
  169. >As the cheers begin to die, Nimble Spark steps forward.
  170. >"Lets not forget of our brethren who are fighting now. Up in Fallujack. East to Damascolt. And all who fell in battle these past couple weeks."

  177. >...

  179. >"If I am to die, I will die content knowing that I have fought beside the finest soldiers this world has to offer. I would rather be in no other place, and have no other friends than you good soldiers of Equestria."
  180. >Roadwind spies a couple stallions wiping tears from their eyes.
  181. >"But less talk of death! I doubt our brothers in the afterlife enjoy seeing us in such a downhearted mood. Rejoice my fellow Equestrians! Rejoice! TO VICTORY AND THE MANY VICTORIES TO COME!"
  182. >At his words the entire room explodes with the stomping of hooves and cheers.
  183. >It feels as if the whole buildings foundation is shaking.
  184. >Nimble gives Marble a slick look which he just brushes off.
  185. >While the soldiers are distracted, Roadwind jumps atop the stage.
  186. "I see you both are enjoying the spotlight."
  187. >"CAPTAIN! Ahahaha!"
  188. >Marble's voice booms through the room alerting everypony his direction.
  189. >As they take one look at Roadwind they give a hoof-stomping applause.
  190. >Through the stomping Nimble speaks out.
  191. >"Well we're happy to share it Sir."
  192. "There's no time for that now. Come on, we need to get ready."
  193. >Marble turns his head quizzically.
  194. >"Whuda ya meean, 'get reedy' EYam reedy! Reedy to git mere CIDER!"
  195. >At the mention of another cider, thankfully softer cheer comes again.
  196. "Oh Sweet Celestia go get some water!"
  197. >As Marble stumbles away, Roadwind turns to Nimble.
  198. "At least you aren't too far gone."
  199. >He also has a puzzled look on his face.
  200. >"Sir, although I am in the right mindset and ready, we earned this break! We were promised a two week rest for our actions on these beaches."
  201. "Yeah, well I hate to break it to you, I just got orders from High Command, we are headed back out starting tomorrow."
  202. >Nimble Spark looks very distraught, but doesn't say anything.
  203. "There's a briefing in the Conference Tent in another hour or so, cast a sobriety spell on him and be there. That's an order."
  204. >"Yes Sir."
  205. >He gives a quick salute and goes to try and pry Marble away from a barrel of cider, where many of the soldiers surrounding him are edging him on to try and chug it.
  206. >Giving a sigh, Roadwind makes his way for the exit.
  207. "Once we get back I'm going to find whoever assigned us this and shove the report down their throat."
  208. >...

  210.
  211.
  212.
  213.
  214. >Agent Copper's eye twitches when he sees the black bars covering the page.
  215. >"General Strider there seems to be a problem."
  216. >Special Agent Copper slides aside the personal documents of the taskforce and picks Roadwinds up.
  217. >"What seems to be the problem?"
  218. >Copper sets Roadwinds records down on the table in front of Strider.
  219. >"Why is Roadwind censored out, I am very particular with my words when I make requests."
  220. >"Those papers contain sensitive information that is unavailable to anypony and everypony other than me or him.
  221. We made an oath together many years ago when-"
  222. >"The Ministry cares little about your archaic acts of chivalry, but I can let this slide just this once. I just want to get a feeling of who I am working with."
  223. >He picks up an old antique figurine of a soldier holding a spear off of Strider's desk.
  224. >"Testing the waters if you will. Make sure I don't get a knife in my flank."
  225. >Strider squints his eyes looking suspiciously at the pony.
  226. >"And why would you get a knife lodged there?"
  227. >"Tensions have been high ever since the Ministry's establishment. Many citizens distrust us."
  228. >"I can only imagine why."
  229. >"We aren't bad ponies, in fact we want the same thing you ponies in uniform are fighting for. Peace. Abroad and at home."
  230. >Copper carefully sets it down back on the corner of the desk.
  231. >"With all that has changed however, we just keep a watchful eye over the ponies who want to 'disrupt' that peace. Understand?"
  232. >"Do you not trust Roadwind?"
  233. >"I'm not sure yet. I guess I'll just have to find out."
  234. >As Copper turns to leave Strider stops him.
  235. >"I may be old but I'm no fool, what are you really searching for?"
  236. >Copper just quizzically turns his head.
  237. >"Don't play dumb, you can stand there and declare all the good intentions you promise. But we all know the truth, the only reason the Ministry ever gets involved in anything outside their little club is so they can help themselves to something too."
  238. >"Our INTERESTS are the well-being of Equestria and her citizens! Remember this General, just because we aren't soldiers doesn't mean we don't have ways to put on pressure."
  239. >As Copper shoves past Strider, he stops at the tent flap.
  240. >"You should write your daughter sometime. I bet little Shirley Temple misses her dear father. Especially since you sent her to live so far away with your sister in Trottingham."
  241. >Through gritted teeth Strider speaks.
  242. >"What are you implying?"
  243. >"I'm just saying it's *amazing* you even have a filly considering your wife is barren. A real miracle of modern science, or moral ambiguity I can't think right now."
  244. >"IF YOU COME ANYWHERE NEAR MY-"
  245. >Copper brings his hoof up silencing Strider.
  246. >"Not so loud, what would the enlisted think of their 'Dauntless General' if they overheard he was a bit. Red-blooded?"
  247. >"Mistakes. Happen. I would like to ask you to leave."
  248. >"A pleasure General, I do better get to that briefing. Maybe we will meet again someday."
  249. >While Copper takes his leave, Strider can only sit idly by with anger.
  250. >As he begins to calm however, a wave of guilt washes over him.
  251. >After some contemplation, he takes out a parchment and a quill.

  256. >"Working. For. The Spooks."
  257. "Can it Marble!"
  258. >Roadwind barks at Marble while still hushed enough not to let Copper hear.
  259. >Everypony is on edge.
  260. >It's been four weeks since they left the coast and still no sign of the fort.
  261. >Or anything resembling civilization.
  262. >What's been slowing them down is Agent Coppers personal little guard.
  263. >Two Saddle Arabian turncoats.
  264. >They were part of the local contingency that helped Roadwind and his team take out the main guns so the invasion force can land safely.
  265. >Can't speak a word of Equestrian but Copper insisted on bringing them along anyway.
  266. >Mostly so they can just lug everypony's equipment.
  267. >By everypony, mostly his.
  268. >Thank Celestia at least one of them understands Equestrian.
  269. >With strict rationing, there's enough food and water to last another week.
  270. >Three if the turncoats are cut off.
  271. >Plenty for now, but not enough to last if the troop is forced to turn around.
  272. >In a diamond pattern; Roadwind is in front Center, Onyx a couple paces back to the left, Marble a couple paces back to the right identical to Onyx. Behind them on each respectable side is Light and Spark. In the Center between everypony is Velvet.
  273. >And a good twenty yards ahead marches Agent Copper along with the turncoats and their carts.
  274. >"Working."
  275. "Marble."
  276. >"For."
  277. "I am warning you."
  278. >There's a pause as everypony marches on.
  279. >"Come on dude, I'm getting tired of hearing it too."
  280. >Onyx pleas land on deaf ears.
  281. >"The Spooks."
  282. >Roadwind turns around a strikes his subordinate.
  283. >Marble's head reels to the right, but he still stands.
  284. >Everyone else stops in shock.
  285. >Marble swishes his mouth with his tongue and spits out some blood.
  286. >"Nice hit Captain."
  287. >Roadwind turns back around and continues the march.
  288. >In a hushed stern tone, Roadwind glares into Marbles eyes and asked a question.
  289. "What's your deal? This isn't like you."
  290. >Marble shrugs and says nothing.
  291. >He puts a hoof to his jaw.
  292. >Slowly he begins rubbing it in tiny circles where Roadwind struck him.
  293. "Light."
  294. >"Yes Sir?"
  295. "Go aerial, see if you can get a visual."
  296. >"Of?"
  297. "Anything!"
  298. >He takes off straight upward.
  299. "Hold back with me a bit."
  300. >They all continue and get a good thirty paces ahead before Marble and Roadwind begin walking.
  301. "Talk."
  302. >The two walk on silently.
  303. "If you won't talk, I will. What do you have against the Ministry?"
  304. >With eyes convicted to staring straight, Marble keeps walking.
  305. "I've been watching you. The little quirks. The quick sneers. The eye twitch..."
  306. >As he said that, Marble's eye twitches.
  307. "Since you first set eyes on him in the Conference Tent you've changed."
  308. >Marble let's out a grunt.
  309. "And right from the start of this trek you've kept your eyes fixed on his every movement."
  310. >There's a slight pause.
  311. "I'm going to ask you again, and you are going to tell me what's wrong. Understand?"
  312. >Marble opens his mouth as if going to say something, but then closes it again.
  313. "What happened?"
  314. >There's a pause.
  315. >A long pause.
  316. >For a while the only sound made was their hoofs marching along and the slight wind at their backs.
  317. >Then Marble responds.
  318. >"The 209."
  319. "What?"
  320. >"CCETS Ponyville209 Express Train."
  321. >oh.
  322. "The crash of Everfree."
  323.
  324. >He remembers it quite well.
  325. >At the time Roadwind was an enlisted in the Royal Guards. Assigned to guard a Miss Savvy Craft.
  326. >A somewhat diplomat.
  327. >White chocolate coat with a milk chocolate mane.
  328. >With square-rimmed glasses perched on her snoot.
  329. >Had that fresh out of college look to her.
  330. >A real cutie.
  331. >Figured she was kept around mostly for eye candy.
  332. >To her credit though she understood both how to act, and how to speak while at the diplomacy table, and was very well spoken in her rhetoric. However you noted she was a bit too accepting.
  333. >It was almost her nature to believe that a stranger is simply family she does not know very well yet, too innocent to understand why others would ever do anything underhooved.
  334. >A greenhorn straight from the University.
  335. >Utterly naive and ignorant to the perils that lie in other creatures, and an easy target for any plot or scheme.
  336. >And this would catch up to her when a very enthusiastic emissary from Griffenstone came waltzing through her doors.
  337. >With just a few strong words you could tell he was a superb diplomat.
  338. >He was so cunning at leading the conversation, he brokered a deal that would gift the Griffish Isles and Trottingham to the Griffonstone Kingdom as a measure of 'good faith between allies'."
  339. >As days went by, other diplomats came to interject but they too were swooned by his convincing nature.
  340. >In the last days before finalizing the treaty, he suddenly had the urge to sight-see.
  341. >A tour of Equestria.
  342. >A tour of Equestria layman style.
  343. >Riding the train, walking the streets. See with his own eyes how different ponies were from griffons.
  344. >Perplexing as it was, Savvy let him go uninhibited.
  345. >A day and a half came and went and word came he was on his way back to Canterlot.
  346. >When his train began passing the Everfree Forest however, disaster struck.
  347. >One of the ancient trees aligning the tracks toppled downward onto the steaming engine.
  348. >As the train jumped the tracks, the railcars smashed into each other and through the forest.
  349. >Several died and many more injured.
  350. >It was assumed the Emissary was deceased as well because his body was never recovered.
  351. >Rumors spread he was assassinated and the incident greatly increased the tensions between Griffenstone and Equestria.
  352. >In response to accusations, Savvy Craft resigned her position and Roadwind was reassigned.
  353.
  354. >"The crash my family died on!"
  355. >A tear is streaming down Marble's cheek.
  356. >"You remember how it went? How that toss-pot of a Prince wanted to 'experience Equestria'."
  357. "Yes I remember, and he was just an emissary not a prince."
  358. >"The Ministry assassinated him to prevent some treaty to get signed using the crash as a cover."
  359. >Roadwind squints his eyes at Marble.
  360. "That's a nice conspiracy theory, but those rumors have all amounted to nothing. There's no evidence. It's all just suspicion."
  361. >"I have done, a lot of digging in my off time and have found numerous inconsistencies with all the reports made public. Things just don't add up."
  362. "Marble calm down."
  363. >"My wife and two fillies were on that train! Them, and all the others stolen away!"
  364. >He tenses up a bit.
  365. >"Peaches took the little ones to Dodge Junction to see her Mother. I stayed behind. She decided to leave a day early to come home to surprise me, If I had just gone with her she'd..."
  366. >Marble sniffles a little.
  367. >"I should've went with them. Maybe then we...I"
  368. "You couldn't have known."
  369. >The two walk in silence as Marble gets some sand out of his eyes.
  370. >As he regains himself Marble breaks the silence.
  371. >"The Ministry is bad news. I don't trust any of them! And now seeing *him* here, leading us only Celestia knows where. I have a bad feeling."
  372. >Roadwind pats Marble on the shoulder.
  373. "I understand what you're feeling, but right now I need you to focus on the mission. Agent Copper is just doing his job, let him for now. I want you to know that IF he does turn on us, I'll be the first to give him a hard hoof, and I'll make sure you will be the second."
  374. >Marble gives a smile and nods.
  375. >"Yes Sir."
  376. >But he's right, something just doesn't seem right about this.
  377. >Roadwind ponders his thoughts as they close the distance with the group.
  378. >The two are right about to catch up with the rest of the group when a gust comes from overhead.
  379. >It's Light.
  380. "Report?"
  381. >A look of awe is on his face.
  382. >"We're close. Just over that ridge and you can all see it."
  383. "Distinctions?"
  384. >"It's...big."
  385. >His emphasis on big gives Roadwind a questionable look on his face.
  386. "Good work, go tell the others."
  387. >...
  388. >As everypony marches closer towards the fortress, its true form begins to make itself known.
  389. >It seems it was carved right out of an ancient mesa with only certain parts and specific buildings made from other foreign stones.
  390. >If anypony were to pass by, it would look to be abandoned.
  391. >The old watchtowers and ramparts remain empty and many of the bastions and buttresses have large cracks from neglect.
  392. >At the very top, old rusted flagpoles stand alone in the baking heat.
  393. >The old banners that once flew from them have been taken down leaving the pole to defy the elements alone.
  394. >The fortress's towering presence blankets everypony in a cooling shadow.
  395. >A crumbling wall surrounds the fortress and a lone portcullis blocks the path of the group.
  396. >Roadwind steps forward to investigate it.
  397. >Unlike the walls, it seemed to be in good condition.
  398. >There is almost no rust along any of the crossed bars.
  399. >The old chains used to lift the heavy monster almost even shined.
  400. >It's been used.
  401. >And recently.
  402. >Onyx sits down with his mouth agape.
  403. >"This isn't a fort, it's a castle!"
  404. >Spark sits down to rest right next to him.
  405. >"What's the difference? Both are used for defense."
  406. >"I was thinking this would be more along the lines of a Motte & Bailey the Saddle Arabians usually make. I didn't think we would be infiltrating the Sultans damn vacation home."
  407. >While the rest of the group settles down, Roadwind tries to look through the gate.
  408. >Peering through the square openings, he could barely see some carts parked inside the courtyard.
  409. >They are partially sunken into the sand, but the tarps look fairly new.
  410. >The crest of a black falcon with its wings outstretched is printed on the side of one of them.
  411. >"See anything Captain?"
  412. >Copper is suddenly standing beside Roadwind staring through the gate also.
  413. "You have some light hooves just like Specter."
  414. >Roadwind doesn't turn and keeps scanning the courtyard.
  415. >"A true trait I learned to care for when going on missions like these."
  416. "How many missions 'like these' have you been on?"
  417. >Copper gives out a little chuckle.
  418. >"Strange don't you think?"
  419. >He's ignoring the question.
  420. "Yes it is. All the guards are missing."
  421. >"Not a single soul in sight for miles. No weapons, clothing, not even corpses."
  422. "They must've went inside? It will be night soon."
  423. >"No, their should be guards."
  424. "Take a look over there!"
  425. >Roadwind motions a hoof to the carts.
  426. >"The Crest of Saddle Arabia. So at least we know somepony important is staying here. It doesn't look to big of a caravan, probably only four or five guards at most."
  427. "And whoever that is we'll find out what they did with our scouts."
  428. >"I'll get my things ready, go and get that Monk and fly atop to see if you can raise the gate."
  429. "You're insane, they'll hear the chains! I suggest we just climb the walls, they aren't too high and we can just carry your stuff over."
  430. >"If they knew we were here, they would be charging at us by now. I don't need any of my tools to be damaged by your clumsy hooves! Now call your subordinate and get this gate open now!"
  431. >He turns back to the two turncoats and calls them to harness back up.
  432. >Roadwind flies up to the wall and carefully peaks over to get a view of the entire courtyard.
  433. >A broken fountain lays on it's side half sunk in the sand that has overtaken the bowl.
  434. >Old clay pots are covered in cobwebs or are broken on the ground.
  435. >It's completely empty other than the two carts.
  436. >Roadwind hovers back to his team who are all checking on their equipment.
  437. "Alright listen up, Me and Light will fly up to open the gate for you all. Nimble I want you to carefully guide it with your horn to prevent as much noise a possible. Once it's open sweep the courtyard and make sure it's clear, you know how much I hate surprises. When that's done we'll move our way to those storage houses, they're connected to the main building and we can use it as a stealthy way inside rather than those heavy front doors. Stay vigilant, we don't have eyes on any hostiles, but that doesn't mean they don't have eyes on us. Watch the windows, watch the doors, watch any opening for movement. Any questions?"
  438. >Nimble looks hesitantly at the towering castle.
  439. >"Sir, what will we do when we're inside?"
  440. >Roadwind makes a glare at Copper who is looking over his things while the two turncoats wait idly by.
  441. >Their keffiyehs cover their facial expressions, but Roadwind could tell they seemed uncomfortable.
  442. "We're going to find our missing scouts."
  443.
  444. >Flying up atop the rampart, Roadwind and Light enter the gatehouse.
  445. >A windlass sits in the center with the end of the chains connecting to it.
  446. >Roadwind sets himself on one side of the wheel and Light the opposite.
  447. >Giving a great heave, the chains strain at the pressure.
  448. >For a second, it seems they are too weak.
  449. >There are four sections for ponies to push and only two are filled.
  450. >Roadwind's hooves begin to shake from the exertion, but he still endures.
  451. >Through grinding teeth he gives Light an order.
  452. "Wings!"
  453. >Light looks over at Roadwind, but still puts force on the wheel.
  454. "Put your wings into it!"
  455. >The two begin flapping their wings tirelessly in hoping it would provide some additional pressure.
  456. >The gate shudders.
  457. >Then it slowly begins to rise.
  458. >Nimble's magical green aura surrounds it as the two slowly watch it rise into the gatehouse.
  459. >Once it got halfway up, the two lock it in place.
  460. >They both lean on the windlass wheezing.
  461. "Nothing like a *cough* workout to end a long march."
  462. >"Couldn't have said it better myself Sir."
  463. >Regaining their composure, they exit the room and join the others in the courtyard.
  464. >The two Saddle Arabians already parked their carts behind a storage house out of sight.
  465. >Copper digs through one of the carts while they sit idly in the shade of the building.
  466. >One of them takes off their keffiyeh and fans himself with it.
  467. >He's young.
  468. >Looks to be barely past the colt age range.
  469. >Roadwind watches as the other one takes out a canteen and let's the younger sip from it.
  470. >Probably his older brother or father maybe.
  471. >Continuing with the sweep, Velvet motions Roadwind over.
  472. >She is standing inside the fountain next to the toppled statue.
  473. >"Captain, take a look at this."
  474. >She points a hoof to the base of the statue.
  475. >Looking carefully, there's a torn piece of cloth.
  476. >A majority of it is a faded white, but the bottom part where the tear is has a bloodstain.
  477. >Turning it over, the tips of black wings and the end of a golden spear peak over the ripped part.
  478. >It's only half of the crest, but Roadwind recognizes it.
  479. "This is from a scout uniform."
  480. >He turns to face the castle doors.
  481. "They were here."
  482. >"They must've went inside, but why? Scouting missions consist of 'Report and Return' right?"
  483. "Something isn't right about this."
  484. >A harsh wind blows the cloth from Roadwind's grasp.
  485. >It flies upward and lands against one of the high windows on the upper level above the doorway.
  486. >Just before it goes out of sight, Light begins to softly whistle.
  487. >Roadwind quickly ducks behind the base of the fountain and Velvet follows suit.
  488. >He looks around and sees the rest of the team also getting behind cover.
  489. >Lifting his head from the sand, his sight ends on Light who is taking cover behind a couple barrels beside another building to the right.
  490. >As their eyes make contact, Light stops his whistling.
  491. >He motions his hooves upward in a square motion and mouths out some words.
  492. >Window. Third row. Far right. Drawn curtain.
  493. >Peaking over, Roadwind sees what Light was warning him about.
  494. >The windows are tinted slightly to block out the sun, but the silhouette of a pony leaning against the glass can be easily seen.
  495. >It stands there motionless.
  496. >Front hooves pressed against the glass as if trying to push it open.
  497. >"Did he see us?"
  498. "No."
  499. >If he did alarm bells would be going off.
  500. >Why is he just standing there?
  501. >The figure stands for what seems like hours before moving.
  502. >But something is wrong.
  503. >As it walks past the other windows, the pony would twitch its head sporadically.
  504. >And each step made seems jankey and forced.
  505. >Similar to how a puppeteer contorts a marionette.
  506. >Getting to the end of the windows it disappears behind the stone walls.
  507. >Roadwind looks to Light who gives an all clear.
  508. >Shaking the sand from his coat, Roadwind gives out a whistle and everypony returns behind the storage house.
  509. "Okay, Onyx and Marble. Get your full plates on. Onyx is on point Marble cover the rear. Velvet and Nimble will provide cover fire if things get hot, we're going to work our way room to room and see what this place is hiding. If you spot anypony or anything do NOT engage. This may be a fortress, but that doesn't exclude there won't be any civilians, if compromised subdue with force, maybe we can get some information as to what happened here. Dead or alive we are getting our soldiers back. Keep an eye out for supplies, we'll need it for the trip back. Copper, you're with me behind Onyx. Get whatever gear you feel comfortable with and lets move out."
  510.
  511. >"And what about them?"
  512. >Copper motions a hoof to the two Saddle Arabians who are idly standing beside everypony else.
  513. >With an eager smile the younger one gives a little wave to the group knowing they were being talked about.
  514. >Marble gives a little wave back and he blushes a little.
  515. >The older one dons his keffiyeh.
  516. >It covers his stoic face leaving only a slit for his eyes.
  517. >He nods readily awaiting a new assignment while the younger half puts his head-wear on also.
  518. >Roadwind gives out a silent groan.
  519. "We don't have time to foalsit two untrained rebels. Their kind were helpful causing havoc and confusion during the landings so we could disable those cannons, but they have no place in an infiltration. One wrong step and all this would be for nothing."
  520. >"Well we can't exactly send them home now can we?"
  521. *Sigh*"I have an idea, have them set up base here in the storage house. They can keep an eye on the courtyard and your precious gadgets or whatever you brought."
  522. >Copper gives out a small smile.
  523. >"That would be perfect."
  524. >As Copper goes to talk to the two Arabs, Light walks up.
  525. >Before giving him his full attention, Roadwind sees out of the corner of his eye Copper giving the older Arab something.
  526. >His payment?
  527. >Many Arabian guides were like that. Pay half now then the other half once got to the destination.
  528. >But that didn't look like currency.
  529. >"Orders for me Sir?"
  530. >Taken back by Light, he gives him his full attention.
  531. "You'll be scouting ahead of the main group since you are the most light-hoofed one out of all of us."
  532. >"Hmph! Barely."
  533. >Ignoring Velvet's comment Light listens on.
  534. >However a smug smile crawls on his face.
  535. "They are most likely going to keep our stallions in the lower floors so search for stairs. Direct us to take cover if there are any patrols. We'll be a good ten paces behind you if anything goes wrong. Stay out of sight and stick to the shadows."
  536. >"Yes Sir."
  537. >As Copper returns, he's wearing two large saddlebags and the same light leather armor you met him in.
  538. "That all you're wearing?"
  539. >"It would be hard to stay quiet with heavy metal plates stomping about don't you think?"
  540. "Not for my team. You'd be surprised how quickly ponies drown out the accustomed sounds of a barracks."
  541. >"Suit yourself Captain."
  542. >He motions a hoof to the entrance door.
  543. >"After you."
  544. >The two glare into each other's eyes for a moment.
  545. >Roadwind tries to get a read on Copper who stands there stone faced. Not letting anything show other than a small smile.
  546. >This lasts the entirety of ten seconds before he steps forward towards the door.
  547. "With pleasure."
  548. >Taking a quick peak through the small window in the door, Roadwind can barely see through the dust and smears it's a hallway on the other side.
  549. >Giving a nod to Onyx, he gives the door a nudge and it creaks open slowly.
  550.
  551. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGNMuKTO15E
  552. >A wave of dust falls from the door frame.
  553. >Down the side of it, a little spider scurries its way back up the door and disappears above it.
  554. >"This entryway seemed like it hasn't been used in months. Years maybe."
  555. "Good, that means this wing might be deserted. Alright file through."
  556. >As the team moves through the doorway, Roadwind looks back over Marble checking on the two Arabs.
  557. >While the older stands beside the window keeping watch, the younger is sitting by himself sharpening a jambia with a whetstone.
  558. >He pulled down his keffiyeh to make it more of a scarf.
  559. >Most likely so he can concentrate easier.
  560. >He notices Roadwind staring and he gives another cheerful smile.
  561. >Hearing the sound of stone striking blade stop, the older gives a quiet call to the younger who then quickly returns to sharpening.
  562. >If Copper is scheming something, they definitely aren't part of it.
  563. >Roadwind ponders over his thoughts.
  564. >No.
  565. >Marble's paranoia is just getting to you.
  566. >Distrust with Copper is just because he's being so secretive.
  567. >But that's his job after all.
  568. >Keeping secrets.
  569. >He's just doing his job just like how you are doing yours.
  570. >Maybe after all this you can all share a cider together?
  571. >However, why does the Ministry even care about a couple of missing scouts?
  572. >"Sir, something wrong?"
  573. >A voice draws Roadwind out of his train of thought and he turns to see the source.
  574. >Marble is standing beside the door waiting for him to enter so he can take his place at the rear.
  575. "It's nothing Marble."
  576. >He gives a nod and they both leave the storehouse.
  577. >As Roadwind makes his way to the front where Copper is, Marble carefully shuts the door.
  578. >*click*
  579. >Light is already up ahead looking about the hallways while everypony else stands in their respected positions.
  580. >As he gets to the front behind Onyx, he turns back to get a view of his team.
  581. >All stand ready and awaiting orders.
  582. >Turning back around he sees Onyx crouching down with his sword and shield at the ready.
  583. >His great Halberd slung over his back.
  584. >All fine soldiers.
  585. "Let's move."
  586.
  587. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOjzNZnX0cs
  588. >Just another walk in the park.
  589. >Roadwind quietly thinks to himself as the team slowly make their way deeper into the castle.
  590. >The long corridors and hallways are almost pitch dark.
  591. >The many sconces that line the wall sit empty.
  592. >Old burnt out torches remain in a scant few.
  593. >Copper fumbles around with something in one of his saddlebags.
  594. >With an "Aha" he pulls out some funny looking glasses and carefully places them over his eyes.
  595. >He illuminates his horn engulfing them momentarily in his dark-red aura and the lenses begin to shine green.
  596. >"What in Celestia are those?"
  597. >Velvet cocks her head to the side staring at the spectacles.
  598. >"That's classified information."
  599. >"Oh come on, you can't just show off some secret techno-gizmo and not give us anything."
  600. >Ignoring her, Copper continues walking along, periodically stopping to look behind.
  601. >"Just a hint? Please?"
  602. "Velvet, leave him and his expensive toys alone."
  603. >With a humph she silences herself.
  604. >While walking, they occasionally pass by pairs of doors each opposite of the other.
  605. >Each time they pass a pair, they stop and Roadwind directs two ponies to inspect what's inside.
  606. >Every time the two come out, the respond with a quick hoof movement meaning 'clear'.
  607. >Coming up to another pair of doors, Roadwind nudges Copper.
  608. "Our turn. Get the right side."
  609. >Copper gives a nod and the two disappear into the opposite rooms.
  610. >Taking a look around Roadwind feels a bit underwhelmed at the sight.
  611. >Nothing too fancy.
  612. >Dresser.
  613. >Single-pony bed.
  614. >Candle-holder.
  615. >Desk.
  616. >Just a very plain ordinary room.
  617. >It looks well kept.
  618. >The only thing it would need is a good dusting.
  619. >Steping back outside he looks over Onyx's head down the hall.
  620. >The stone walls vanish into the darkness making it appear to go on forever.
  621. "All these must be either for the servants or guests."
  622. >"That's exactly what I was thinking."
  623. >Nimble peaks his head looking back down the way they came.
  624. >"All these rooms look exactly like the servant rooms in my parents manor in Canterlot."
  625. >"You tightwad upper class nobles are all the same, doesn't matter which nation you come from."
  626. >Marble gives Nimble a playful punch with his jest.
  627. "Well I don't care if they're all the same, it will only take one pony hiding to blow our cover. We'll check every room. Speaking of which."
  628. >Roadwind knocks once on the right door.
  629. "Copper let's go."
  630. >No answer.
  631. >He knocks again and still nothing responds.
  632. >As Roadwind is about to push inside, the door flies open.
  633. "What took you so long?"
  634. >Copper just gives a shrug.
  635. >"Just taking in the scenery is all."
  636. >He places a hoof on Roadwind's breastplate and lightly shoves him out of the way to get back in line with the others.
  637. >"Are we ready to continue now Captain?"
  638. >Roadwind stares daggers through the green lenses of Coppers glasses.
  639. "Yes we are Agent."
  640.
  641. >Making it to the end of the hallway, a little chirp from above makes them stop.
  642. >Roadwind looks up and sees Light perched on one of the rafters.
  643. >He has a hoof pressed up against his mouth signalling them to be quiet then he slowly hovers down towards them.
  644. >Roadwind steps closer and speaks in a hushed tone.
  645. "Report. Got a visual on something?"
  646. >He nods and points his hoof up.
  647. >"Staircase. Center."
  648. "Nice job Light, is he alone?"
  649. >"Yes, but something is wrong."
  650. "What's wrong?"
  651. >"I don't know, something is off. We should go another way."
  652. >Peaking out from the doorway, the grand staircase comes to view.
  653. >It's the main entrance!
  654. >The tinted windows show an outline from the carts parked right outside.
  655. >The great stained glass windows provide some dark colored lighting and one of those beams shines perfectly on a figure.
  656. >A Saddle Arabian.
  657. >He's exactly where Light said he is.
  658. >Just like the figure from the window, he fidgets and twitches about in place.
  659. >It's still too dark to see, but he doesn't appear to be wearing armor or holding any weapons.
  660. >A cloak rests covering his body leaving his head exposed.
  661. >We can take him.
  662. >Giving a quick whistle Roadwind hopes to lure him over.
  663. >The pony doesn't even flinch.
  664. >He just keeps twitching.
  665. >Roadwind gives out another whislte. This time a little louder.
  666. >Nothing.
  667. >"Sir please, something isn't right here."
  668. "It's one pony right?"
  669. >"Yes."
  670. "Alright then. We can-"
  671. >Roadwind stops mid-sentence and blinks.
  672. "Where did he go?"
  673. >He steps into the main entryway and the whole squad follows close behind.
  674. >The only thing left is the cloak sitting in a pile where the Arab stood.
  675. >Nimble Spark goes to examine the cloak.
  676. >It's tattered.
  677. >The once pristine golden polyester now faded to a sun bleached light yellow.
  678. >"Captain."
  679. >Nimble holds up the inner side of the cloak up.
  680. >Almost the entire inner part is stained with blood.
  681. >"This stains are old, a week at least."
  682. >Onyx interjects.
  683. >"This is all well and good, but that doesn't explain where that Arab w-"
  684. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY08HS9_uzk
  685. >Before he could finish his statement something pounces on him from above.
  686. >He slams into the ground as the thing claws at his back.
  687. >"AHHH! GAH! GET IT OFF ME! GET IT OFF!"
  688. >Light rips it off Onyx's back and puts his spear through its sternum.
  689. >It screeches out and lashes at him.
  690. >A stray claw scratches his neck and he flinches back.
  691. >He responds by doubling down with another stab forcing the creature to slink to the ground.
  692. >It whimpers quietly until Light rips his spear free from its gut.
  693. "You two alright?"
  694. >Light puts a hoof to his neck.
  695. >"Just a flesh wound, not even deep."
  696. "Onyx?"
  697. >Roadwind offers a hoof to help him stand.
  698. >"The crazy crowbait just got the jump on me, nothing too worse for wear."
  699. >Velvet lets out a gasp.
  700. >"Onyx, your back."
  701. >"What?"
  702. >Onyx twirls around trying to see letting everypony else get a glimpse.
  703. "Sweet Celestia..."
  704. >His plate armor has two large gashes in it.
  705. >"Amazing."
  706. >Agent Copper steps up to examine Onyx's armor more closely.
  707. >"It ripped it open like nothing."
  708. >"Captain. Look."
  709. >Light is bent down looking at the beast.
  710. >As Roadwind gets close however, he sees it's just a pony.
  711. >Body starved to nothing but a skeleton in skin.
  712. >The hooves are chipped to almost the bone.
  713. >Jaw agape.
  714. >Dead beady eyes staring into nothing.
  715. >Its coat was almost non-existent.
  716. >And...
  717. "Wings?"
  718. >They looked smaller than normal wings.
  719. >As if they grew years after he was already born.
  720. >"Sir, look at the shoulder of its wings."
  721. >At the joint where they connect are scars.
  722. >Dozens of intricate scars.
  723. >"This is no natural pegasus. He was created."
  724. "Created? You mean surgery?"
  725. >"It seems so. Look how small those wings are on his body."
  726. "Light that is impossible. Wing transplants can only happen between pegasus. Same goes for horns on unicorns. The magic between Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn can never just mix. It's just like blood types. Besides it would take an Alicorn amount of magic to even keep that pony stable enough to survive such a change."
  727. >"I'm not saying it as a fact, but you can't change what you see."
  728. >Light points his hoof at the thing.
  729. >"This is NOT normal!"
  730. >Right as he finishes his statement, the winged pony raises upward and latches its jaw onto Light's extended hoof.
  731. >Everypony screams in horror as Light screams from the pain.
  732. >He uses his free hoof to desperately try to free himself from the monsters grasps to no avail.
  733. >Quickly, Marble tackles the two to the floor and uses his sword to free Light.
  734. >"Uahhhhhhh!"
  735. >Light doubles over onto his side clutching his hoof.
  736. >Nimble rushes to Light's aid and casts a healing spell.
  737. >"This will stop the pain for a moment, but ti won't fix you completely."
  738. "How bad is it?"
  739. >"Sir he's going to need serious care. If we were back at base camp I could have him wrapped up ready for an early Hearth's Warming."
  740. "But-"
  741. >"Disinfection and cauterization is the best I can do for now."
  742. >"Uh, Captain?"
  743. >Velvet looks around concerned.
  744. >With the sun almost down, the bright illuminated reflections have dimmed making several dark spots in the entryway.
  745. >"W-where did Copper go?"
  746. "What!?"
  747. >Roadwind scans the group and Copper is nowhere to be seen.
  748. "Coppper! Copper where did you go!?"
  749. >As his screams echo through the halls of the complex, he gets a response.
  750. >Howls.
  751. >Dozens.
  752. >Hundreds.
  753. >The same kind they heard before Onyx got pounced.
  754. >At the very top of the staircase, a figure steps out from the darkness.
  755. >Its body twitching sporadically as is stumbles into what's left of the light.
  756. >With a sudden jerk it twists its head downward and stops.
  757. >Directly on the view of the group.
  758. >Nopony moves a muscle, paralyzed by the disfigured almost rotted appearance of it.
  759. >In this stare-down, Onyx decides to blink.
  760. >He takes a breath and lets out a great roar.
  761. >The creature screeches back even louder in kind.
  762. >As it screams it separates its jaw even wider, shrieking out a deafening tone causing everypony to cover their ears with their hooves.
  763. >Before it stops, a couple more pop out from the darkness.
  764. >As they crick their necks in the direction of the group, they too let out their own piercing cries.
  765. >On the ground, the body of the creature that attacked Light and Onyx is convulsing violently.
  766. "We need to move! Now!"
  767. >Marble picks up Light and cradles him over his back.
  768. >The group dashes into the hallway they came from.
  769. >Not looking back, they continue to hear the screeching.
  770. >Following them.
  771. >Gaining on them.
  772. "Get back to the storage house!"
  773. >Through the darkness, Roadwind can barely see down the corridors they came from.
  774. >Left.
  775. >Right.
  776. >Another left.
  777. >Right?
  778. >This should be the straightaway.
  779. >This has to be the straightaway!
  780. >At the very end a single door can barely be seen.
  781. "Onyx! Get that door open! Marble, I want you and Light through that door right on his flank! Hot hoof it! Go! Go! Go! Velvet, Nimble. >Make a shield wall with your magic!
  782. >The two unicorns combine their magic and make a barrier blocking off the hallway.
  783. >Past their magical impediment, Roadwind can see them.
  784. >Stumbling past each other.
  785. >Jaws split open.
  786. >With their jankey movements they still run as fast as the average pony.
  787. >Only a few have wings however.
  788. >Even with them they only glide.
  789. >Interesting.
  790. >As they smash into the wall, the couple beasts leading the charge completely smash their heads open.
  791. >Even as they slump to the floor, their bodies still convulse.
  792. >Their hooves still trying to claw through.
  793. >Still trying to break through.
  794. >And from the main impact, three large cracks appeared.
  795. >"Sir?!"
  796. "GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT! ONYX THE DOOR!"
  797. >The two grind their teeth and focus all their energy into the wall and the cracks slowly begin to dissipate.
  798. >Roadwind turns to see Onyx fumbling with the handle.
  799. >"I-I don't know what's wrong! It's locked!"
  800. >Roadwind shoves him aside and tries.
  801. >"Captain!?"
  802. >The two unicorns brace themselves as the beasts smash again on the wall.
  803. >A few more bigger cracks appear next to the ones they almost just fixed.
  804. >The knob easily turns, but when he pushes nothing gives.
  805. >He quickly tries again putting more force in his push.
  806. >The door doesn't even quiver.
  807. >The window!
  808. >Roadwind presses his face to the small window.
  809. >Through the smears and dust he sees...words?
  810. >Arabic words.
  811. >It's a crate.
  812. >A shipping crate?
  813. >Roadwind steps away horrified realizing what happened.
  814. "It's not locked, it's barricaded."
  815. >"ROADWIND!"
  816. >Velvet's scream is followed by a final smash.
  817. >And the wall shatters.
  818.
  819. >...
  820.
  821. >The door closes with a click, and the Equestrians disappear behind it.
  822. >In silence the two Arabs sit, eyes locked on the door.
  823. >Waiting.
  824. >After a moment the older one stands.
  825. (Translated from Arabic)
  826. >"Kaffa, where are you going?"
  827. "Keep your eyes on the door. You hear anything, stay quiet and get me."
  828. >"Yes Brother."
  829. >He leaves to stare out the window at the far end of the room.
  830. >The courtyard is bare, and all the windows sit clear from any figures.
  831. >With the sun almost past the horizon, the large shadows from the mountain have cast themselves almost over the entire complex.
  832. >Coming here was a mistake, but everypony has their price.
  833. >Even if it means risking the one you love.
  834. >This place.
  835. >Even with it so far into the desert, Kaffa's home wouldn't escape its grasp.
  836. >Little Tatar is too young to remember the stories.
  837. >His mind will forever be on the war.
  838. >So fixated on the horrors of war to pay attention to the horrors from the crypt.
  839. >Abu Shalawlaw
  840. >The Boogeyman.
  841. >Every colt and filly hears the tales.
  842. >And everypony grows out of being afraid of him knowing he isn't real.
  843. >However not all stories are lies to keep disobedient foals in line.
  844. >Disappearances after sundown.
  845. >Terrified screams in the night.
  846. >Ponies walking home after dark never to be seen again.
  847. >Wazīr's would come to calm its citizens.
  848. >Although each one would bring bearing contradicting stories too obvious to ignore.
  849. >Yet life went on.
  850. >And the lies were accepted as truth.
  851. >Day after day more ponies would be gone.
  852. >And nopony would dare bat an eye.
  853. >"B-brother?"
  854. >Tatar has walked over to the window to sit beside his Brother.
  855. "Hmm?"
  856. >"Why didn't you want me coming?"
  857. "Why did you want to come?"
  858. >Tatar sits silent debating his answer.
  859. >"I didn't want to leave you, after Mom and Dad aban-"
  860. "Stop."
  861. >Kaffa voice deepens with anger.
  862. "For the last time they didn't abandon us! They were taken."
  863. >"Taken by who? Abu Shalawlaw? You have told me that lie ever since I could walk! What is the truth?"
  864. "Not so loud you little bloodweed."
  865. >Kaffa puts a hoof to Tatar's mouth and turns to look back out the window.
  866. "Hopefully we will be able to find out once the Equestrians are done. Now go back to the door and listen for once."
  867. >Tatar reluctantly goes back to his spot as Kaffa shakes his head.
  868. >No respect.
  869. >He should've been taught better.
  870. >You should've taught him better.
  871. >Stepping away from the window, Kaffa approaches his younger sibling.
  872. >Before he could say his apology, he stops.
  873. >That sound.
  874. >A faint scratching.
  875. >In a whisper Tatar asks Kaffa.
  876. >"Brother can you hear that?"
  877. "Yes."
  878. >Scratching.
  879. >It's light, but repetitive.
  880. >Growing at a very steady rate.
  881. >"I-I think it's coming from the door."
  882. >Kaffa puts his ear against it to try and make out anything else.
  883. >He could feel the vibrations the scratching is making right on the other side.
  884. >Turning back he sees Tatar with a horrified expression on his face.
  885. >"K-Kaffa. The window."
  886. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZCGPAss8Gw
  887. >Everypony grows up, and the fear of ghouls and monsters are traded in for the stresses of life.
  888. >But now seeing one first-hoof.
  889. >To truly know that some monsters are real.
  890. >Can send a chill down even the most boldest of ponies.
  891.
  892. >Looking through the glass Kaffa comes face to face with a pony's face.
  893. >A unicorn.
  894. >"Kaffa, open the door. It's one of the Equestrians! Something is wrong!"
  895. "That's no Equestrian."
  896. >It's face looked sewn on and the eyes were sunken into the skull.
  897. >In small uncontrolled bursts, it would hit its head against the window.
  898. >His horn making a light tapping sound on the glass with every contact.
  899. >"Yes it is! He's a unicorn, he must be one of the scout's the Equestrians are looking for!"
  900. >Tatar reaches for the door handle, but Kaffa quickly shoves him back.
  901. "No!"
  902. >As he does it, the scratching turns into banging.
  903. >Slam after slam shakes the old wooden door to its hinges.
  904. >"M-maybe you are right."
  905. "Help me with those crates!"
  906. >A couple of food crates sit idly in the corner.
  907. >The two quickly get behind one and push with all their might.
  908. >"That door isn't going to hold much longer!"
  909. "Push harder!"
  910. >Getting the first crate against the door, they rush back to the second one.
  911. "Lift it on three. Use your knees."
  912. >"1."
  913. "1."
  914. >"2."
  915. "2."
  916. >"3."
  917. "3."
  918. >With a heave they carry carefully carry the crate and place it onto the other one blocking off the door completely.
  919. >As soon as they do, the banging stops.
  920. >For a second the two wait anxious for what comes next.
  921. >"Do you think it's gone?"
  922. >A bead of sweat trickles down Kaffa's forehead.
  923. "I don't k-"
  924. >Suddenly the center of the crates begin to glow midnight blue.
  925. >Slowly with the glow a transparent hoof with it.
  926. >He made himself intangible.
  927. >Compared to its skeletal face, the hoof looks normal.
  928. >It reaches out through the crates searching for something to latch onto.
  929. "Tatar get behind me."
  930. >The two scramble back a couple yards and Kaffa pulls out his scimitar.
  931. >He points it at the crates as the pony-like unicorn's head begins poking through.
  932. >First just the tip of its horn can be seen, but eventually the rest begin to surface.
  933. >Seeing it emerge more, the two back-step.
  934. >Again.
  935. >And again.
  936. >Until they almost have their backs to the walls.
  937. >As the creature fully steps from the crates, he makes himself tangible.
  938. >It's almost half a meter taller than the Arabs.
  939. >With a wide smile, he stares at the two through his sunken eyes.
  940. "Get back demon!"
  941. >Kaffa swings his scimitar at its head.
  942. >Before it could strike, his sword harmlessly passes through its intangible body and slams against the wall.
  943. >With his side exposed, the unicorn quickly grabs both of Kaffa's right appendages.
  944. >Using his left hoof, he wildly slashes at it to try and free himself.
  945. >With each slash beads of blood would trickle from the wounds, however it just brushes them off.
  946. >Lifting him up, it begins to stretch Kaffa's two right legs in opposite directions.
  947. >He clenches his jaw and squeezes his eyes shut from the pain.
  948. >Every second that passes sends a wave of pain through his body.
  949. >He can feel his muscles strain and joints pop from the stress.
  950. >Before his joints completely give, he gets relief.
  951. >The creatures grasp loosens on his back hoof and he quickly bucks free.
  952. >Opening his eyes, he sees Tatar stabbing the creature in its hoof with his janbiya.
  953. >"Leave him alone!"
  954. >He goes for another stab, but the unicorn knocks him back with a swing from his hoof.
  955. >Tatar hits the wall and falls to his stomach.
  956. >He wheezes from the blow, wind knocked from his lungs.
  957. >Lifting Kaffa to its face, he is stares right into his eyes.
  958. >And whispers.
  959. >"Worthless."
  960. >He turns its head to look at Tatar still on the ground.
  961. >"But not useless."
  962. "Stay awaAHHHHHHHHH"
  963. >The unicorn twits Kaffa's hoof breaking it and tosses him aside like a dirty rag-doll.
  964. >Stepping over Tatar, Kaffa sits powerless on the ground as he watches it takes hold of his little brother.
  965. >"Kaffa!"
  966. >Kaffa forces himself up and charges at them ignoring the pain from his broken hoof.
  967. >Before he can get to them, it makes itself and Tatar intangible and they slink through the wall.
  968. >He slams against the old wall and stumbles to the ground.
  969. "NOOOOOOO!"
  970. >He punches the wall repeatedly trying to get through, but he knows it's in vain.
  971. "No. Tatar."
  972. >He slinks to the ground defeated.
  973. "I-I need to find the Equestrians! They'll know what to do."
  974. >Suddenly a banging comes from the door.
  975. >Kaffa jumps back startled, tripping over his broken hoof.
  976. >He's coming back!
  977. >Scrambling to his scimitar, he stops when he hears voices.
  978. >"-ONYX THE DOOR!"
  979. >"I-I don't know what's wrong! It's locked!"
  980. >This isn't right, they must've also found trouble.
  981. >Sheathing his weapon, he uses it as a cane and swiftly gets to the door as best he could.
  982. >Through the door, he could hear some sort of commotion.
  983. >Screeching almost.
  984. "Just hang on."
  985. >Putting his back to the bottom crate, he pushes with all his might.
  986. >"ROADWIND!"
  987. >"Incoming!"
  988. "Lets go!"
  989. >Swinging the door open, he sees a wave of 'things' before he gets shoved aside by two of the Equestrians.
  990.
  991. >...
  992.
  993. >"You!"
  994. >Marble slams the Arab against the wall.
  995. >"You set us up!"
  996. >The Arab coughs up some blood and says something in Arabic nopony could understand.
  997. >"Shut your trap you dirty desert Brumby!"
  998. >Marble slams his hoof into the Arabs face.
  999. >In a pleading tone the Arab tries to speak again, but he's met with another hoof.
  1000. "Marble that's enough!"
1001. >"Are you kidding me! Give me one good reason not to end his putrid backstabbing life!?"
1002. "We don't know if he was in on it! Maybe, maybe-"
1003. >"Maybe nothing! Look at the facts! First the spook disappears, then we get ambushed. When we get back to our only entrance it's barricaded up with him behind the door!"
1004. "If he wanted us dead, why would he open it back up?"
1005. >"It should've never been blocked in the first place!"
1006. >Onyx promptly intervenes between the two.
1007. >"Hey guys, where is the colt?"
  1008. >"The what?"
1009. >"You know, his little brother, or son or whatever."
1010. >Looking around the room, they don't see him.
1011. >Then all eyes turn to the Arab slumped against the wall.
1012. >Marble grabs him by his collar and lifts his head up.
  1013. >"Where is your friend?"
1014. >Tears are streaming down his cheek and the Arab only mutters a single word.
  1015. >"Tatar."
  1016. >"What? Tartar?"
  1017. >"Tatar!"
  1018. >Nimble pushes Marble back a bit.
1019. "Sweet Celestia, look at his hoof."
1020. >The Arab quietly cradles his arm as everyone's attention is brought to it.
1021. >Nimble bends down to take a look.
  1022. >In a soft tone he speaks,
  1023. >"Let me see it, I won't hurt you."
1024. >The Arab reluctantly extends his hoof for him.
1025. >Using his horn, he engulfs the hoof in a magical aura lighting it up.
1026. >The light fades around the hoof and brightens it internally making it transparent.
1027. >"He has a oblique fracture. Friend what happened to you?"
  1028. "Will he be alright."
1029. >"Yeah, I can fix this easily. I might need some help from Velvet though."
1030. "Well you heard him Velvet. Get on it."
1031. >The room stays quiet not giving an answer.
  1032. "Velvet?"
1033. >Looking around the room, Velvet was gone.
  1034. >"What happened?!"
  1035.
  1036. ***
  1037.
1038. >"AHHH! GAH! GET IT OFF ME! GET IT OFF!"
1039. >As the group struggles with the beast, Copper quietly backs into the shadows.
  1040. >"
