  121. Grammar: gerunds and infinitives
  122. - gerund = verb+ing form used like a noun (subject, object of verbs and prepositions)
  123. Subjects are almost always gerunds:
  124. Dancing is a good way to meet people.
  125. Smoking cigarettes is bad for your health.
  126. Listening to music helps me relax.
  127. (Gerunds are singular subjects with the “it” form of verbs.)
  128. I like listening to music because it (listening to music) helps me relax.
  129. Objects of prepositions are always gerunds:
  130. You can meet new people by taking a dance class.
  131. I’m interested in learning new things.
  132. I look forward to relaxing after work.
  133. - infinitive = to + base form (sometimes subject, object of verbs, after adjectives, to express purpose)
  134. After adjectives are usually infinitives:
  135. It’s important to eat healthy.

  138. To express purpose, always use infinitives:
  139. I’m studying English (in order) to travel.

  141. Who did you go with to buy milk? (“to buy” is after a preposition, but not the object)

  144. - Some verbs are always followed by the gerund.

  153. Generally, the gerund means the action really happened (or will happen before the main verb), and the infinitive means it might happen or it will happen after the main verb.)
