  1. Subject: Business Manager Now Leading Developer/DBA
  2. Message: I'm a quality manager for a manufacturing plant. Recently I've been put in charge of the database administrator who manages the applications side of our systems. I'm a technology enthusiast (obviously) and an amateur programmer. I don't want my enthusiasm to stifle or annoy them so I'm trying to listen more and ask questions rather than be directive. What is the best way to manage a solo developer in an environment like a small business where they will be primarily creating line of business applications. I'm less concerned about code review and things like that. What concerns me most is how to develop their skills and challenge them. Can you recommend any resources that would help me direct them professionally so they can continue to grow as an application developer? Have either of you been managed by a non developer? If so what advice would you have for me?
