- So today I'm going to be doing k plays blood in the cut music video, I'm only going to be doing the first couple of minutes. Because the video is a bit strange, nothing much happens. The lyrics are the more interesting part to me, although there is some interesting stuff visually towards the beginning, but the lyrics get extremely repetitive, the last minute is very chorus the and moves away from the verse. So I'm just going to be doing the first couple of minutes or so. And on the right here, you see, we have this site genius. And it's a lyrics site slash community of some sort. And the artist herself is very active on the site. So she has either directly made comments herself or co signed off on other people's comments. So that gives more perspective than you often have, in terms of what the artist intended, at least. So I thought that was interesting. So be looking at that stuff. So let's get started.
- 1:22
- So we've got an overturned vehicle over here.
- 1:27
- The symbolism is
- 1:29
- somewhat clear, I think, her life, or her emotional state, or something about her existence is a wreck.
- 1:39
- She's not doing well, I say
- 1:41
- she is will be seeing the artist emerge from the wrecked vehicle and just in just a second.
- 1:57
- So we see right away,
- 1:59
- just got this jacket,
- 2:00
- hair color. This is a it's a standard look, in some sense, I'll just move it a couple more frames as a standard and look in some sense, but it's not, I guess what people would call like a basic look or a very basic look. She's trying to look like a badass, some way, you'll see another couple of seconds, her boots. So she's there trying to convey that story. She's getting out of a wreck, she's dusting yourself off, kind of casually, she's not crying or screaming or anything like that, which a lot of people would do. If they were actually getting out of a corrective vehicle, they would be pretty emotional. So
- 2:50
- there's the boots.
- 2:53
- Scott another
- 2:56
- might be fucking right now. So the first couple lyrics are an interesting contrast. Because we're starting out, we're starting out where something bad has happened, the record standing for suddenly, we don't know quite what.
- 3:12
- But now,
- 3:13
- she's telling us that her boyfriend is cheating on her while looking like a badass, which is, which is an interesting contrast. And I'll say more, I'll say more as we get a little further into the video, I just wanted to start pointing that out. I don't have an audience I was my father died. So her life is not in the position, or in the state that she expected
- 3:41
- it to be.
- 3:43
- She doesn't have her own apartment.
- 3:45
- She thought she'd be further in life, but she's still at the start.
- 3:48
- So things are not going while boyfriend is cheating on her.
- 3:52
- So it's not a good situation.
- 3:56
- Today just be safe.
- 4:00
- And that's what they just end up doing.
- 4:04
- So she has chronic relationship problems, such that she sarcastically comments about being contagious. And you know, it'd be safe if she ran, because that's what all her previous relationships have warmed up her boyfriends or whatever I've done that. break it in half. So let's see if she said anything. This is really a shout out to the Rolling Stones. Okay,
- 4:33
- so painted black, is this a separate one?
- 4:36
- Okay, paint it black, I could see it's just a
- 4:39
- straight reference and said such a
- 4:41
- famous thing.
- 4:43
- Take my arm, break it in half. And then the next thing is say something, do it soon.
- 4:48
- It's too quiet in this room.
- 4:51
- She kind of wants something to happen, even if it's unpleasant. And she wants it to happen to her.
- 4:59
- And she's not
- 5:01
- she wants to happen right now.
- 5:02
- She's not somebody who's comfortable with quiet contemplation, I guess, is what I'm getting at. And, you know,
- 5:14
- or even even just the quiet.
- 5:16
- And so as a distraction from boyfriend apartment, not making it very far in life, chronic relationship problems, you know, she just wants something to happen to her just to break the silence and a sense, just something
- 5:36
- to quiet.
- 5:46
- So this is all obviously very,
- 5:49
- I shouldn't say obviously, but
- 5:50
- this is very clear, be DSM references. buzz of a said meaning submissive,
- 5:58
- somebody in the submissive roll
- 6:00
- into crack of a whip
- 6:03
- that I think speaks for itself need some bug in the cut.
- 6:08
- So the context here
- 6:11
- is that she sort of putting on this dominant hat in the chorus.
- 6:17
- But
- 6:18
- I realized the rack she's not happy. She's not at peace with yourself.
- 6:23
- So it's just a distraction
- 6:24
- with like, in my last video when I was commenting on the Black Eyed Peas song. Um, and you know, it was, I think it was Fergie said something, you know, some situations you didn't like in her life maybe was workers that thing.
- 6:39
- And so she wanted to party.
- 6:41
- So this is basically the same thing. It's, it's in a more edgy cast. But it's basically the same kind of deal. People aren't happy.
- 6:51
- So they wanted a distraction. That seems exciting in
- 6:53
- the moment.
- 6:54
- What I think is more interesting here is there's this ongoing contrast between between the this
- 7:03
- fake
- 7:04
- badass ness and the actual weakness. That's really clear. And I'll say a bit more about that.
- 7:12
- Because the there's more weakness. And
- 7:13
- so I think that contextual coming right up. And so I think that contextualize Is it better.
- 7:37
- Just focus on the visuals for a second, even though
- 7:41
- they're not their primary, I just, I just found it kind of weird.
- 7:45
- I mean, there's a couple of weird things going on here.
- 7:48
- Um, the first is a color of the blood. I don't know if that's like me, like, I don't know why they chose that maybe it's
- 7:57
- some sort of,
- 7:58
- I don't know, rating system, I'm concerned some countries for the music video or something, I have no idea. So I thought that was interesting. I also thought it was interesting that in this part of the chorus,
- 8:12
- it seems like the
- 8:14
- subject is the speaker. So k flay dominating somebody else, but here, she's seems to be doing the bleeding, and the video. And she is like in pain, so she's doing some metaphorical bleeding. But I thought it was interesting that they made her do some literal bleeding.
- 8:39
- And actually,
- 8:41
- in an interview, she says,
- 8:45
- she's sort of explaining her perspective on
- 8:47
- her emotional state, when she was making the video, she says, What's cool for me with this song is that the verses and the spirit of those sections is really vulnerable, and we can bleeding something. So she does see it as bleeding. And then as the song kind of breaks into the chorus, there is that feeling of self awareness and power. And that was really like a true reflection of how the song came to fruition.
- 9:11
- So like that those two spirits can exist side by side.
- 9:15
- So it's her explicit intent,
- 9:18
- basically, to sort of have that
- 9:21
- mix of those, those two ideas.
- 9:24
- So let's go through a bit more of the verse
- 9:31
- on the streets of San Francisco,
- 9:34
- so that's really weak,
- 9:36
- right? She's like, crying in the
- 9:38
- street.
- 9:39
- She has a comment here.
- 9:41
- This isn't the one I wanted. Actually, I think it's it's coming up. So I'll wait for that.
- 9:48
- I don't have an agenda.
- 9:51
- be okay.
- 9:52
- So my friends get hot in the blender.
- 9:55
- So more, sort of pitiable week, and she's pretending to be okay, hearts in a blender, meaning, you know, she's in a lot of pain. She's just pretending she's not strong or powerful or anything. She's just kind of a weak emotional
- 10:13
- person.
- 10:22
- Right, so this is the one.
- 10:25
- Now the comment she makes is kind of funny, I have a tendency to revisit correspondence. And it's funny because, right, it's like a somewhat dispassionate, understated
- 10:36
- statement of what's going on. But
- 10:39
- it's,
- 10:40
- it's like, it's a bad thing. To be so focused on, you know, somebody else messaging me, what did they say, if they messaged me recently enough, that and that whole sort of thing, it's a lot better to have your own stuff going on, to be focused on yourself, then, if other people want to do stuff together, hang out,
- 11:05
- you can have that. But
- 11:08
- you have it from a position of
- 11:10
- strength, where you have a lot of stuff going on, hopefully, they have a lot of stuff going on. And then you can kind of intersect, and each bring something to the table, as opposed to
- 11:24
- being sort of needing emotionally dependent,
- 11:27
- and that sort of thing. So
- 11:30
- my big comment here is that think k play and the video and everything,
- 11:35
- want to have a two ways
- 11:37
- where and K flay like I said this, this exclusive, like,
- 11:41
- they want to have
- 11:42
- this weakness and this vulnerability,
- 11:45
- and also this element of power,
- 11:46
- and pretend that those can
- 11:50
- coexist in some reasonable way.
- 11:53
- And I don't really think that they can, I think there's a contradiction there. I'm crying industry need to be reading messages. These are not powerful acts or behaviors. They're they're very weak and dependent, and you can't, you can't mix that with power. And as I was watching the video, I thought of another
- 12:20
- context,
- 12:21
- where I saw this theme is actually
- 12:24
- and Star Wars episode eight,
- 12:28
- where they made
- 12:29
- sure yeah,
- 12:31
- so they they space to
- 12:33
- beloved fan character and replaced him with was an alien, replaced him with this female Admiral with SJ w colored hair. And I thought it was interesting. I came across an article. And they
- 12:50
- were talking about
- 12:52
- because that the character is really bad.
- 12:54
- Um,
- 12:56
- and basically,
- 12:58
- accidentally insights immunity,
- 13:01
- accidentally insights, a mutiny, I should say, a mutiny of the ship's crew, due to her poor communication skills.
- 13:10
- That's literally what happens. And
- 13:14
- so the actress who portrayed that character, was sort of describing the
- 13:19
- idea behind it.
- 13:21
- And she says,
- 13:23
- Are we going to
- 13:24
- lead and be who we are as women in our femininity? Or are we going to dress up in a boys clothes to do the boys job?
- 13:31
- And
- 13:32
- I think that idea has the same sort of
- 13:35
- contradiction,
- 13:37
- where they want to, they want to have a mix. And so again, you see that character, and I compare that mentally to a different female Admiral and a different show and Battlestar Galactica, Admiral Kane, and how she dressed. So you compare this lady it looks like she's ready for a gala at the Metropolitan Museum. And this lady looks like she's
- 14:00
- ready to fight people boarding or ship.
- 14:02
- You know, I think the same thing, the same sort of contradiction is motivating this video.
- 14:09
- They,
- 14:10
- k flay dresses up as a bad ass, and wants to come off cool. talks about BDS and wanting blood in the cut and the buzz of a sub and all this kind of stuff. And then she's crying the street. And that's just, that's just a mass that doesn't work. It's just, that's just weakness. And it misleads people, because it it tries to tell them that such a contradiction can work.
- 14:36
- And they should lead their lives that way,
- 14:37
- as opposed to trying to address some of the problems in
- 14:41
- their lives that caused them to
- 14:43
- now cry in the street. And, you know, maybe they can read the fountainhead and figure out how to be more independent person
- 14:51
- or something like that.
- 14:52
- So let me get through, probably around two minutes to 10 minutes, keep going.
- 15:03
- So
- 15:05
- right to my head and kick it in. That's more things being done to her that she she wants, break some bread from my sins. This is a biblical reference, as one of the entertainers helpfully noted. And its reference and comes up in the context of communion now. And she contextualize it religiously, because she,
- 15:31
- she talks
- 15:32
- about her sins.
- 15:35
- So it's clearly that sort of reference.
- 15:37
- So
- 15:38
- you know, she knows, she knows that she has
- 15:41
- sins.
- 15:42
- She knows that there's a lot
- 15:44
- of stuff wrong with her life, and that she's not happy. But her solution is to escape into this fake world where she's powerful, even though she's really not
