  1. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga Version Differences
  2.
  3. This pastebin lists the differences between the Japanese and English versions as it relates to speedruns.
  4. For general version differences refer to http://themushroomkingdom.net/mlss_j2e.shtml
  5.
  6. The only cartridge version is 1.0. The differences are based on either English or Japanese region.
  7.
  8. *Some stuff might have been missed. I'll add more as needed.
  9.
  10. -- Wii U Virtual Console --
  11.
  12. ENGLISH
  13. The Action Command Glitch does not lag the game as much on VC. It also does not have a chance to skip frames during action command glitching making VC more reliable and safer to do inputs faster.
  14.
  15. It is assumed the Japanese version has the same benefits on VC but this is unknown for sure.
  16.
  17. -- General Route differences --
  18.
  19. - Barrel clipping is Japanese only
  20. - English version can clip through rocks but it is slower and more likely to softlock
  21. - Mush badge more expensive and less powerful on Japanese version
  22. - English route does not farm Knockback Bros. This leaves the final Cackletta fight up to some RNG, but it still faster.
  23. - English version is the fastest version ultimately due to higher damage from the red pepper glitch and better mush badge.
  24.
  25.
  26. -- Stats --
  27.
  28. **Starting BP:
  29.
  30. JAPAN
  31. Mario 14 BP
  32. Luigi 16 BP
  33.
  34. ENGLISH
  35. Mario 10 BP
  36. Luigi 10 BP
  37.
  38. Syrups are required for the early boss fights on the English version.
  39.
  40.
  41. **Stat Progression:
  42.
  43. -Attack progression is higher on the English version.
  44. -BP progression is higher on the Japanese version.
  45. -Level up bonuses are higher on average on the English version.
  46.
  47.
  48.
  49. -- Splash Bros Advanced --
  50.
  51. JP: Requires 20 uses
  52. EN: Requires 19 uses
  53.
  54. Technically the English version needs 20 uses, but the Bros Attack tutorial counts towards the Splash Advanced counter which effectively reduces it to 19.
  55.
  56.
  57. -- Mush Badge --
  58.
  59. The Mush Badge works the same in both games but it is much weaker on the Japanese version.
  60.
  61. JAPANESE (Cost: 238 coins)
  62. 0.078 - Mushroom
  63. 0.098 - Super Mushroom
  64. 0.117 - Ultra Mushroom
  65. 0.199 - Max Mushroom
  66.
  67. ENGLISH (Cost: ~110 coins, will vary based on level and Stache stat)
  68. 0.199 - Mushroom & Super Mushroom
  69. 0.250 - Ultra Mushroom
  70. 0.299 - Max Mushroom
  71.
  72.
  73.
  74. -- Bosses --
  75.
  76. **Tolstar
  77. Tolstar has higher DEF on English version. The following damage numbers assume both bros are level 3.
  78.
  79. JAPAN
  80. Splash Bros: Between 6-8 damage depending on Mario's stats
  81. Bounce Bros: Always 6 damage
  82.
  83. ENGLISH
  84. Splash Bros: Always 7 damage
  85. Bounce Bros: Always 5 damage
  86.
  87. English version takes one more turn because a Syrup needs to be used.
  88.
  89.
  90. **Hoohoroos
  91. Hoohoroos has higher DEF on Japanese version and requires good stats to kill fast. English version needs less turns on average to win this fight but has to use a Syrup due to less BP.
  92.
  93. **Dragohoho
  94. The English version on average will have higher attack stats, but will usually require a Syrup to be used during the fight, depending on stats this can take 4-5 turns. The Japanese version can kill in 4 turns but requires high level up bonuses.
  95.
  96. English version saves time when Advance! and a kill are done on the same turn because both animations happen at the same time.
  97.
  98.
  99. **Queen Bean
  100. JP: 100 HP
  101. EN: 120 HP
  102.
  103. This makes no difference in the speedrun because Mario does more damage on the English version to make up for it. Assuming favorable stats, both versions should take four turns to kill Queen Bean.
  104.
  105.
  106. **Popple & Rookie**
  107. English version saves time due to Rookie attacking less and doing more damage on average.
  108.
  109.
  110. **Popple & Birdo
  111. Japanese fight is slower due to weaker Mush Badge, but does not have to do a rock skip to get here.
  112.
  113.
  114. **Bowletta
  115. JP: 700
  116. EN: 500
  117.
  118. English version is faster due to stronger Mush Badge and less HP.
  119.
  120. **Cackletta
  121. JP: 800
  122. EN: 1200
  123.
  124. Japanese version is faster because it uses Knockback Bros Advance infinite to kill.
  125. English version is slower due to 2 cycle kill, but it gains a lot of time earlier in the run by not having to farm Knockback Bros. Due to 2 cycle kill this fight is heavily dependent on RNG for a good time.
  126.
  127.
  128. -- Glitches and Skips --
  129.
  130.
  131. **Barrel Clipping
  132. Version: Japanese only
  133. Used for: Early Fungitown, Big Skip, Bowser Castle Skip
  134.
  135. -Early Fungitown, Big Skip, and Bowser Castle Skip is faster with barrel clipping
  136.
  137. **Barrel Storage (using a real barrel)
  138. Version: Both
  139. Used for: Sign glitch
  140.
  141.
  142. **Sign glitch
  143. Version: Both
  144. Used for: Early Firebrand
  145.
  146.
  147. **Action Command glitch
  148. Version: Both
  149. Used for: Everything
  150.
  151. Slightly faster on English version because L does not need to be pressed as many times.
  152.
  153.
  154. **Hat Clipping
  155. Version: Both
  156. Used for: Early Fungitown, Big Skip, Rock Skip (EN)
  157.
  158.
  159. **Rock Skip
  160. Version: Both, but not needed on Japanese
  161. Used for: Big Skip, Early Fungitown
  162.
  163. Clips through rocks which require higher level hammers to break. Japanese version does this with barrel clipping and is faster.
  164.
  165.
  166. **Bowser Castle Skip
  167. Version: Both, but behaves differently on both versions
  168. Used for: Skipping Bowser's Castle
  169. Japanese version is faster due to barrel clipping.
  170. Timer event stored from HooHoo Mountain soul collecting game.
  171.
  172.
  173. **Red Peppers Glitch
  174. Version: English only
  175. Used for: Cackletta fight
  176. Makes the POW bonus of Red Peppers permanent if the bro you use it on dies and is revived with a 1UP shroom before the peppers effect wears off. This also works with Green Peppers but is not useful in a speedrun.
