  2. Mother 2 (Earthbound)
  3.
  4. Platform: Snes
  5. Released:
  6. 27.08.1994 (J)
  7. 05.06.1995 (NA)
  8.
  9. Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-MB)
  10.
  11.
  12.
  13.
  14. - The game does not show you your play time. You'll have to time your
  15. sessions manually if you want to keep track of it.
  16. - Exp is divided among active party members.
  17. - The game is quite hard. I myself can't keep anyone other than Ness
  18. alive until I reach the end of the game (where it's easy to get the
  19. others to Lv99). Expect to see the game over screen a lot. The game
  20. over policy is the golden parachute.
  21. - HP gain is tied to Vitality and PP gain is tied to IQ. Unless your
  22. Vitality or IQ goes up, your HP and PP gains upon leveling up will be
  23. marginal or non-existent.

  51.
  52.
  53. - When you start a new game, you'll go through the settings (set text
  54. speed to fast (Hayai)) and choose names for the characters and some
  55. other stuff (the last one being the name of the offensive spell Ness
  56. uses).
  57.
  58. Party: Ness Lv1 \\\ Onett Outskirts ||
  59. Items: Boro no Bat, Butter Roll
  60. Items (nc): Cookie, Oto no Ishi (Unique)
  61. - You'll start off with 20 bucks (+30 on your bank account) and the
  62. Cash Card, which is used to operate ATMs. Money from defeating enemies
  63. always goes directly to your bank account.
  64. - Each character has 14 slots of inventory space.
  65. - You can use L to talk to and examine stuff.
  66. - Go talk to Porky / Pokey near the site of the impact then return home.
  67. Later, answer the door and talk to mom.
  68. - The phone will ring as you try to leave. Calling your dad will allow
  69. you to save your game. Your dad will call you on your cell every two
  70. straight hours to pester you. Doesn't matter how you respond.
  71. - Talking to your sister Tracy allows you to access the storage (36 slots).
  72. - You'll want to level up a little first. Enemies have a habit of spawning
  73. in specific spots. You can easily get into battles right in front of your
  74. house. Just move a little right, then left.
  75. - Make your way to the meteor to find Porky's brother as well as Bunbuun.
  76. - Go talk to Porky's dad then get the Oto no Ishi from the dying Bunbuun
  77. (choose 'No').
  78. - From now on, you can run into the photographer in specific spots. These
  79. encounters have no impact on anything, though.
  80. - Make full use the butterflies. Catching one heals 20 PP to all characters.
  81.
  82. \\\ Onett ||
  83. Items: Hamburger, Orange Juice
  84. Items (nc): Machi no Chizu (Unique), Mister no Boushi,

  91. Yakyuubou 19 D
  92. Yasumono no Udewa 98 D
  93.
  94. - Ness has a nasty habit of becoming Homesick, which usually prevents
  95. him from acting. The only way to cure it is to return home and talk to mom.
  96. - You can pick up the town map at the library.
  97. - Make your way to the tree house behind the library to get the Mister no
  98. Boushi.
  99. - Get some new gear at the drug store, then level up by the arcade (Lv8
  100. is enough).
  101. - Behind the arcade, you'll fight Frank and his robot creation.

  126. - 492 Exp
  127. - He can deal as much as 60 pod with a critical hit.
  128.
  129. Item: Hamburger \\\ Path to Twoson ||
  130. Item (nc): n× Ananuke Nezumi
  131. - The Aruku Kinokos can inflict you with the nasty Kinoko status ailment.
  132. It's like confusion and lasts until healed. The only way to get rid of
  133. it is to find someone who can remove it (you'll gain 50 dollars in the
  134. process). The guy with blue hair in any hospital can do it.
  135.
  136. \\\ Twoson ||
  137. Items: Kowareta Kikai (Unique, Temp), Nuigurumi, Skip Sando

  145.
  146. - Call mom to get the number for Escargo Unsou. Calling it will allow
  147. you to access your storage.
  148. - If you keep talking to the guy in the large room in the hotel, you'll
  149. get 50 bucks.
  150. - I'd skip the bike. You can only ride it when your party consists of
  151. a single character.
  152. - Yoyos and Slingshots have lower accuracy than bats and can't deal
  153. critical hits.
  154. - The Douguya no Kanban can be used to call an NPC to buy items from you.
  155. - Fighting Tonchiki-san (986 xp) at the park is optional.
  156. - There's a Nuigurumi in Paula's room in the house that says Polestar.
  157. It will take some damage in your stead.
  158. - Visit the pizza place to get their number (they do deliveries only).
  159. The large pizza is 238 D and heals 240 HP.
  160. - The trash can in Apple Kid's house contains the Kowareta Kikai
  161. (Anti-PSI Machine once fixed). You shouldn't pick it up as it's hardly
  162. useful and you can't get rid of it.
  163. - Talk to the Apple Kid. Give him some food and 200 D, then head east
  164. from the bus station.
  165.
  166. \\\ Grateful Dead no Tani ||
  167. - Once you've seen the pencil, head back to Twoson.
  168.
  169. Item (nc): Takokeshi Machine (Unique) \\\ Twoson ||
  170. - Talk to Apple Kid at the park to receive the Takokeshi Machine. You can
  171. use it to destroy the pencils.
  172.
  173. \\\ Grateful Dead no Tani ||
  174. Items: Tabi no Omamori, Luck Capsule (Artifact), Croissant, Bomb,
  175. Boushi Helmet, Inochi no Udon
  176. - You won't have enough space for all the items, so be selective. You
  177. won't need the Takokeshi Machine again any time soon, so you can store that.
  178. - This will be your first encounter with enemies that blow up on you
  179. upon dying.
  180.
  181. Items: Croissant, Skip Sando \\\ Happy Happy Mura ||

  191.
  192. - You can rest in the house next to the blue cow for 50 bucks.
  193. - Go through the northern cave to reach the house where Paula is kept.
  194. She'll give you the Franklin Badge. Without it, you'll get a game over,
  195. if you try to fight Carpainter. It's not a piece of equipment, though;
  196. just a key item.
  197.
  198. [Boss]
  199. - 1412 Exp
  200.
  201. - Use the key to free Paula. She'll have a Butter Roll and a Nuigurumi
  202. in her inventory.
  203.
  204. \\\ Lilliput Step ||
  205. Items: Ooki na Omamori, Croissant, Psycho Caramel
  206. Boss: Kyodai Mogura
  207. - You can try to level up Paula, but it won't make a difference. As I've
  208. already explained, I always have to go solo with Ness for the vast
  209. majority of the game, as I've no idea how you're supposed to be able to
  210. keep the other characters alive.
  211. - You'll need to go to a hospital to revive dead characters.
  212.
  213. [Boss]
  214. - 5791 Exp
  215. - He can deal about 120 pod with a critical and cast Life Up A.

  221. from one of the NPCs in the first room.
  222. - Go talk to Tonchiki at the park to get the Satsutaba.
  223. - Talk to the Tonzura member outside the club to get the Backstage
  224. Pass. Use it to get inside the club. Talk to the girl near the door
  225. leading backstage to get backstage. Next, give the Satsutaba to the
  226. club owner (you need to stand right next to him to do so).
  227. - Talk to the Tonzura guy outside and get on the bus once you're ready
  228. to go to Threek.
  229.
  230. \\\ Threek ||
  231. Items: Skip Sando, Nuigurumi, Sacchuu Spray

  238. - Check one of the drawers on the second floor of the hospital to
  239. find the Taishitakotonaimono.
  240. - Toritsuki Zombies can possess you, which is one of the most annoying
  241. status ailments in the game. The blue-haired guy can get rid of it.
  242. - Approach the zombies in the northwest corner, then follow the woman
  243. in front of the hotel and you'll end up locked up. Check the door and
  244. you'll switch to Jeff.
  245.
  246. Party: Jeff Lv1 \\\ Winters ||
  247. Items (nc): Locker no Kagi (Unique, Temp), Chotto Kagi Machine (Unique),

  249. Fuusen Gum (Unique)
  250. - Jeff starts with the following items: Pencil Rocket 5, Yude Tamago,
  251. Monosashi, Bundoki, Kowareta Spray. Eggs will eventually hatch at which
  252. point you'll start hearing chirping noises.
  253. - Jeff can't deal critical hits, but his attacks ignore shields.
  254. - Jeff can't use any PSI, but he's the only character who can use
  255. Pencil Rockets and certain tools and gadgets during battle. He can also
  256. fix broken (Kowareta) items when spending the night somewhere. Depending
  257. on the item, this requires that his IQ has reached a certain figure.
  258. - Talk to the guy on the first floor to get the Locker no Kagi. Try to
  259. use it on one of the lockers, then talk to him again. Use the machine
  260. to clear the lockers (3 items in total).
  261. - Start by getting some levels. Buy some Fuusen Gum from the woman at
  262. the store then talk to the monkey.
  263. - Talk to one of the NPCs in one of the huts by the lake / river and
  264. spend the night. Next, approach the water to get a ride from Tessie.

  266. \\\ Brick Road ||
  267. Items: Butter Roll, Sacchuu Spray, Kowareta Iron, Croissant,
  268. Shock Gun (Unique)
  269. - Once fixed, the Kowareta Iron becomes the Nebaneba Machine. This is
  270. the only one of Jeff's tools you can get rid of (and re-obtain if you
  271. want to). It's hardly useful, so I suggest you just sell it.
  272.
  273. \\\ Rainy Circle ||
  274. Items: Hamburger, Yasumono no Udewa, Pencil Rocket
  275. - Use the gum near the third chest to have the monkey toss down the rope.

  278. - Don't fight the enemies by the Stonehenge.
  279. - Once fixed, the Kowareta Suidoukan becomes the Shield Killer (30 IQ).
  280. You can use it to take down an enemy's shield, although it doesn't
  281. always work.
  282. - Talk to the professor inside the lab then use the Sky Walker.
  283.
  284. Party: Ness, Paula, Jeff \\\ Threek ||
  285. Items: Haemitsu (Unique), Double Skip Sando, Gin no Udewa

  294. - Move around the circus tent and you'll get a call from Apple Kid who's
  295. sending you his latest invention, the Zombie Hoihoi. Use it inside the
  296. tent then spend the night at the hotel.
  297. - Take the underground path in the cemetery. You'll more than likely
  298. get possessed, but just try to push on through.
