He worked well into his 90s, outliving his wife and all three of his children, until there was nothing left but the work. Over the years he began to augment himself with some of the tech normally implanted in Lancer pilots. Much of it experimental, all of it highly illegal: he justified it to his superiors by sheer force of reputation, and to himself by the world's need for his research. He knew it would all come crashing down eventually. That was life. That was biology. He could postpone it, but he could never prevent it.\n\nHe never thought it would take his mind before his body.  \n\nWith access to the best medical facilities on [homeworld], he was able to detect Alzheimer's early. Many his age would simply accept their fate. Enjoy their last lucid moments. Johannes Von Klaproth was made of different stuff. \n\nHe had been working for many years on an experimental concept. Not even a concept. He had long feared calling it that, for to so much as utter it openly would have attracted the attention of the law. But the time for caution had passed. He would fuse with an AI core: augment his mind as well as his body with an independent personality which could fill in for certain routine functions. The AI had studied human interaction in a machine learning database -- particularly the famous figures of Earth's History -- in order to learn human behavior. Its mission was to use that experience to replicate Von Klaproth's personality and carry out his wishes after the disease took his biological capabilities. Von Klaproth acknowledged the conundrum in his last letter to his colleagues: \"I will, fellow voyagers, be functionally dead. But my work will carry on.\" \n\nWhat exactly happened after that is unclear. The man -- the man? -- who was once Johannes Von Klaproth is told the Lancer Corps was the only organization willing to fund his latest research and provide a laboratory. He was, he is told, dead to all who knew him, though in his later years that was precious few indeed. \n\nHe remembers a great deal about Johannes Von Klaproth. If anything, those memories are clearer these days than they were... before. He also remembers another entity. An entity which could not itself really be called life. He cannot entirely decipher how the old scientist managed to make them merge, or what failed, but he can picture the view -- or the sense, for it did not at that time possess eyes -- of that cold automaton as well. \n\nHe can access both personalities, for what they were, at will. To him it's a bit like watching a movie, or remembering a particularly vivid dream. They are fascinating, both of them. Terribly flawed, of course. So much waste, he will often think -- has no-one to tell -- in the production of those life forms. Neither are him.
