Sequoia Session 7

[19:37:06 ][zoofman] Okay!  So last we left off you guys had just gotten back from Nena's challenge and taken a trip to the Poke Center to get your buddies rested up.  Now that that's over, its around noon.
[19:42:00 ]* Dann- searches for a quick cheap meal in the PokeCenter. He forgot to eat this morning and his stomach is profoundly unhappy.
[19:43:18 ][castfromhp] Percival, your phone is ringing!
[19:43:57 ]* Percival picks it up. "Eh? Oh! Sorry, hello!"
[19:44:57 ][castfromhp] "Heya." You hear Blintz's tired voice. "Nena pinged our lab. Grats and all that. You with the others?"
[19:46:13 ]* Dann- then whips out his phone and sends Sandy a text: [Hey, what are you up to?]
[19:46:47 ][Percival] "Oh yes, we're still around. Thanks as well."
[19:47:20 ][Percival] "Is there something you need done?"
[19:47:53 ][castfromhp] "Faaaantastic." Blintz says, with a yawn. "So good news and bad news. The bad news is that monster you sent us barfed on me this morning."
[19:48:26 ][castfromhp] "The good news is I ran some tests on the plant matter in its stomach, and I've got a pretty good idea of where it came from - Hollyhock, like the other incident Moses told you 'bout."
[19:49:53 ][Percival] "That's great to hear and sorry about it yakking all over you. Would you like us to check up there?"
[19:50:25 ][castfromhp] Sandy replies after a bit: [Just finished lunch. You?]
[19:51:00 ]* Lucian spends the morning stocking up on a few travel supplies, ready to get back on the road as soon as the others give him word. He stops by a cafe to grab a quick lunch while he's out and about.
[19:52:23 ][castfromhp] "Yeah, actually Benedict got in touch with one of his colleagues, Professor Grit. Turns out he's got a small research camp set up near the town, and he's sending a boat up from Oceanspray with two of his aides tomorrow morning. I think you met 'em."
[19:53:57 ][Dann-] [Nothing much. Just got back from getting a badge.]
[19:54:31 ][castfromhp] [Ooh, congrats! I heard Nena's battle is pretty nuts.]
[19:56:08 ]* Adrienne was doing pretty much the same as Lucian, hitting up shops to pick up supplies and this and that.
[19:56:11 ][Percival] "I see, that sounds like a grand idea. I'll make sure the others know so we can prepare! Thank you very much."
[19:56:55 ][Dann-] [Yeah, it was chaos. I honestly wouldn't have had a chance without my friends.]
[19:57:41 ][castfromhp] "Greeeat. I'll text you with the time and meeting location later. I think I'm gonna go take -another- shower. Good luck and all that." Click.
[19:59:00 ][Dann-] [I've been meaning to ask you about these weird shards I keep finding in the ground. Think we could meet up for a bit today?]
[19:59:49 ][castfromhp] [Oh, sure thing. I'll be stopping by the main Pokemon Center in town soon. Meet there?]
[20:00:15 ][Dann-] [Already there. :P]
[20:01:11 ]* Dann- looks over at Percival as the call ends. "Who was that?"
[20:02:42 ][castfromhp] It's not long before Sandy shows up at the pokemon center, carrying a couple bags from some of the clothing shops in town. She waves and walks over to your table. "Yo."
[20:03:13 ][Percival] "It was Blintz, just calling to say he found out some more information about that giant quagsire that was brought in. It came from Hollyhock and we're to take a boat there today to investigate further."
[20:03:53 ][castfromhp] (the boat's tomorrow morning)
[20:05:23 ][Percival] "Tomorrow then, I'm guess we don't have much on our plate for today however."
[20:05:24 ][Dann-] "Leaving by boat? That's unexpected. But cool! That sounds like a fun change of pace." He turns to Sandy. "Hey there! What do you make of these?"
[20:05:47 ]* Dann- promptly dumps all of his shards out on the table. He makes a meager attempt to organize them by color.
[20:06:12 ][Dann-] "I noticed that you seem to be able to make some pretty cool stuff. Think you could show me what we could do with some of these?"
[20:08:21 ][castfromhp] She glances over them as she removes a glass phial from her pouch.
[20:09:32 ][Percival] "It's far more relaxing atleast, I can only hope there aren't things much worse over there."
[20:09:33 ][castfromhp] "They're energized crystals, fragments of the Elemental Stones you use to make some Pokemon evolve, basically. If you know what you're doing, you can even reassemble the original stones."
[20:10:17 ][Dann-] "Woah."
[20:10:56 ][castfromhp] "Or make something entirely different. They're pretty volatile! But with the right reagents, you can make all sorts of things to boost a Pokemon's power."
[20:12:28 ][Dann-] "I had no idea they were so versatile." He ponders his collection. "Well, I've got the most of these red ones. Is there anything you know how to make out of those?"
[20:14:47 ][castfromhp] She picks up your red shards and tosses them up and down, testing their weight. "You'd need just a bit more to make anything useful. But you almost have enough for a Fire Stone. Or I could make something that boosts fire attacks or protects against fire."
[20:15:54 ][castfromhp] "Actually, fun fact, the red shards are like parts of a Fire Stone, but I could also make something aligned with the Fairy or Psychic Type with them."
[20:16:32 ]* Dann- snaps his fingers. "A fire stone! That's what makes Vulpix evolve. That would really help Kai out down the line. Hm, I wonder if I can find another red shard down on the beach before tomorrow..."
[20:17:04 ]* Lucian switches on his phone and sends Adrienne texts in the meantime, [Where you be?]
[20:18:18 ][Dann-] "I don't suppose you have a spare red shard you'd want to trade to me?"
[20:18:21 ][castfromhp] "I've probably got a spare somewhere. Maybe..." She looks over your collection. "Trade you for one of the blues?"
[20:18:39 ][castfromhp] "I'll need it for a water stone later."
[20:19:07 ][Dann-] "Sounds good to me!" He replies with a grin. "What's the water stone for?"
[20:19:15 ]* Adrienne takes a minute to reply, being in the middle of browing around for items. [Just killing time at the Mart, getting supplies.]
[20:20:03 ][Lucian] [Let's do something.]
[20:20:10 ][Lucian] [Explore the wilds or something.]
[20:22:12 ][castfromhp] "Oh I guess you didn't get a good look with everything that happened in that cave..." Sandy digs around in her bag and hefts out a large fossil - looks like a Shellder, but more angular. "'least I'm hoping the prehistoric kind evolves the same way as the modern variety."
[20:22:20 ][Adrienne] [Sure. Meet you there.]
[20:22:58 ]* Adrienne finishes her shopping at her normal pace and heads out to meet up with Lucian, stopping by the center on the way to grab her Pokemon.
[20:23:29 ][Dann-] "Wow, that thing is huge! I guess you managed to find what you were digging for in there. Nice."
[20:23:45 ][castfromhp] "Hehe, thanks."
[20:24:09 ][Dann-] "Wish they had a fossil machine here so we could both starting raising our finds."
[20:25:00 ]* Adrienne waves to Dann, Percival, and Sandy when she stops by. She doesn't hang around.
[20:25:29 ]* Dann- waves back. "Where are you off to?"
[20:25:56 ][Adrienne] "Killing time with Lucian."
[20:26:17 ]* Lucian doesn't have much of a destination in mind when he sets out with Adrienne, just knowing to stay more or less nearby the city in case the others need him.
[20:26:23 ][Dann-] "Cool. Percival tells me we get to take a boat trip tomorrow morning."
[20:26:59 ][castfromhp] "Yeah, but anyone can just head down to St. Cascara for that. I might actually do that myself soon."
[20:28:11 ][Percival] "Hm... we should see how everything with Naomi, no dubt she heard of that Gyarados."
[20:28:40 ][Adrienne] "Gotcha," she says to Dann.
[20:28:40 ][Adrienne] She just goes along with Lucian when they meet up, doing her usual and not chatting much. She seems pretty at ease. Eventually, she strikes up small talk with "hell of a gym fight, huh?"
[20:29:25 ]* Lucian hums, "Yeah. She was right though. We were too timid. And for all the praise we got, I don't think we did much as a team."
[20:30:09 ][castfromhp] "So a Fire Stone, huh?" Sandy tosses a blue shard on the table and scoops up your 3 red shards. "It'll take me a bit - delicate process, you know? I'll have it done tonight or tomorrow morning if you wanna meet here again."
[20:30:50 ][Dann-] "Sounds good. And thanks! I'll make sure to get it from you before we get on the boat."
[20:30:59 ][Lucian] "But then, a failure you can walk away from is one you can learn from, yeah?"
[20:31:40 ][castfromhp] "Where are you headed to?" Sandy asks curiously.
[20:32:00 ][Adrienne] "Yeah," she answers. "I don't think I was timid, though, but whatever."
[20:32:27 ]* Dann- ponders whether he should give Sandy the whole story about the Quagsire. He decides to keep it partially vague.
[20:33:17 ][Dann-] "Prof. Benedict tasked us with investigating some strange Pokemon behaviors that have been showing up in the region. Maybe you heard about the Quagsire that was rampaging around town here?"
[20:33:42 ][castfromhp] "Yeah, I saw the mess it made in town."
[20:34:17 ]* Lucian laughs, "No need to get offended. But we did stall out toward the end. Some unfortunate positioning on your Teddiursa's part, too much baiting with Ishtor that didn't really synergize with the slugfest Fumu got into."
[20:34:27 ][Lucian] "Stuff like that."
[20:35:02 ][Dann-] "Well, we actually came here to investigate it, and wound up ending its trouble in the process. In the end, we had it sent back to Benedict labs. Seems there's evidence that the behavior may have been caused by something at Hollyhock Point. So that's where we're off to."
[20:36:14 ]* Adrienne shrugs. "Work in progress, I guess."
[20:37:55 ][castfromhp] "Ah." Sandy says simply; something about what you said seems to have made her a bit more muted than before. "Well, have fun I guess. Be careful up there. I've got some errands to run, then I'll get to work on your Fire Stone." She puts on a smile and waves, then she's out the door as quick as a flash.
[20:38:58 ][@Doxy] Percival, as you're doing ... whatever you're doing, you feel the egg incubator you're carrying begin to shake!
[20:40:29 ][Percival] "Oh! That little guy is up, I need to see this."
[20:40:36 ]* Percival places it on the ground and observes.
[20:40:51 ]* Dann- waves back, but she's already gone.
[20:42:39 ]* Dann- then turns to watch what's going on with Percival.
[20:43:32 ][Percival] "Ah the egg that Naomi gave me, in the incubator, that's what's happening."
[20:43:52 ][@Doxy] You open up the incubator, and see the Skiddo egg is shaking! After a moment, a pair of horns cracks through the shell, and a small fuzzy white face looks up at you. "do."
[20:44:48 ][Adrienne] "Honestly, I have no idea how to work on team fighting," she says to Lucian. "You have a clue?"
[20:46:01 ]* Lucian laughs, "Hehe, me neither. Double battling was covered in the Advanced Battle Tactics portion of the curriculum and I was oriented toward medicine and research."
[20:46:19 ][Lucian] "But I suppose it's just something we need to work at a bit at a time."
[20:46:32 ][Lucian] "You know, get some wins under our belt, get a feel for our capabilities..."
[20:46:32 ][Percival] "Aw, hey there little one. I'm Percival."
[20:46:49 ]* Percival reachs his hand down for it to sniff.
[20:47:03 ][Lucian] "You know what, that's a good idea. How about you tell me a little bit about how you approach battling and training and I can do the same."
[20:47:36 ][@Doxy] It gently nibbles on your hand for a moment, and then continues crawling out of the egg.
[20:48:12 ]* Dann- walks deliberately over to Percival, taking care not to startle the newborn. "Congrats, Percival! He's, or uh, maybe she's, adorable."
[20:49:38 ]* Adrienne makes a 'hrnh' kind of grunting noise. "I don't know; it's all very seat of my pants."
[20:50:24 ]* Lucian chuckles to himself, "You know, you aren't as cerebral as your image presents. That's cute."
[20:50:51 ]* Percival makes sure the little one makes it out of the egg. "Ah yes, I believe it's a she. Such a sweet little one you are."
[20:51:51 ][Lucian] "Well how about I start then? Maybe that'll give you a better idea."
[20:52:22 ][Adrienne] "... I'm pretty new to battling," she replies. "I figured I'd learn better by doing."
[20:54:09 ][@Doxy] The lil' skiddo finishes crawling out, trying to crawl onto your lap on its wibbly wobbly legs.

[20:54:46 ][Lucian] "Hmmmm, I suppose you could say I have a very stubborn approach to battling. I push my Pokemon as far as they can go, in battle and in training. It's not really the prediction heavy, switch out meta that's popular these days but it works well for me."
[20:55:31 ][Lucian] "A lot of my studies revolve around Battling as catalyst for Pokemon growth and development so I like to instill a healthy taste for conflict in them."
[20:56:39 ][Lucian] "When somebody pushes them, I expect them to push back even harder. And when all's said and done I try to train them so that they can push back for as long as the battle takes."
[20:57:34 ]* Percival pets the new Skiddo. "That's alright, take the rest you need."
[20:58:00 ][Lucian] "Since I like to keep my Pokemon in for as long as possible, I'm working on more varied move sets for them. No matter what situation they find themselves in, I want them to have an appropriate response."
[20:58:49 ][@Doxy] The Skiddo wiggles around, flailing its little noodly newborn legs, and sneezes a bit of eggy gunk on your lap. "Doo~"
[21:00:00 ][Dann-] "Anyway, I'm going to go walk around for a bit. I'll catch you later Percival."
[21:00:09 ]* Dann- pulls out his phone to send a group text.
[21:01:08 ][Dann-] [Hey all. Looks like we're gonna be taking a boat trip tomorrow morning (Ask Percival). Anyone wanna split the cost of a fishing rod with me?]
[21:01:45 ][Lucian] [I'm not much on fishing, sorrrry.]
[21:02:52 ][Percival] "Aw, that's alright. Catch you later, I'll be just here if you need me."
[21:04:20 ][Adrienne] "Huh, sounds neat," she responds after thinking it over. "You know, Pokemon react pretty well to food, I figure part of my success so far's because I feed Arthur well."
[21:04:43 ][Adrienne] [Kinda broke.]
[21:06:11 ]* Dann- heads out to pick up an Old Rod and some bait. Afterwards, he takes out Glyce and walks around town to show him what his 'home town' looks like before he takes him even farther away from his old cave.
[21:09:06 ]* Lucian nods, "Oh yeah, Pokemon nutrition is a legit field of study. I'm surprised you haven't heard more about it."
[21:10:28 ][Lucian] "You know what, I might have some books at home. Maybe I'll see about shipping a few copies over to wherever we end up staying."
[21:10:36 ]* Percival carries around his little Skiddo to pick up an Old Rod + Bait so he has something to look forward to on the boat ride over.
[21:10:56 ][@Doxy] Alright!~
[21:11:06 ][Adrienne] "I've done my fair share of research," she replies. "I did get accepted as an aide, after all."
[21:13:48 ][Dann-] [OK, I'm gonna pick one up anyway. If any of you end up catching any of the monsters I'm gonna reel in, the bait's on you! ;)]
[21:14:48 ][@Doxy] You all finish your various errands for the day. The next day, you all wake up fairly early to meet Alex and Lawrence at the harbor. The boat you'll all be taking is a fairly small skiff, with only one more crewmember - Bluebill Chad, a salty ol' dog.
[21:15:09 ]* Lucian scratches the back of his neck, "Uh yeah, don't mention this to the others but I don't think academic merit was a major consideration for the job."
[21:15:19 ][Lucian] "Just...one of many."
[21:19:22 ]* Adrienne ends the conversation with a thoughtful "huh."
[21:19:22 ][Adrienne] "Boat's kind of small," she comments.
[21:20:44 ][zoofman] Alex is leaning against a post on the pier, hands tucked in the pockets of her trackjacket.  She looks half asleep and just as grouchy as before.  It takes a while for her to notice you guys approach, and when she does she just gives a "welcoming" nod and grunt.
[21:20:48 ]* Lucian waves to the other aides, "Hey, I heard we were working with another lab but I didn't think we'd be seeing any friendly faces.
[21:22:53 ][zoofman] "Working WITH us?  Huh, you heard more than we did, then.  Are you all ready to go?"
[21:23:02 ][castfromhp] "Hey! Who knew we'd run into each other again so soon, right?" Lawrence waves. He was humming to himself and brushing a contented looking Mareep on deck.
[21:23:02 ][Dann-] "What have you two been up to?"
[21:23:53 ][Adrienne] "Nice Mareep," Adrienne comments.
[21:24:42 ][zoofman] Alex groans.  "Dealing with the Wild Pokemon near the Professor's camp."
[21:25:25 ][Lucian] "Camp huh? I guess if he's friends with Benedict he's probably a pretty hands-on type researcher."
[21:25:49 ][castfromhp] "Thanks!" He continues to brush his sheep. "So I heard you're dealing with something pretty scary up in Hollyhock."
[21:26:19 ][Adrienne] "We have to get up there first and see what's up."
[21:26:32 ][Lucian] "Oh, yeah...there's been some trouble with there recently so we're getting called out to investigate."
[21:26:45 ][Dann-] "Maybe you've heard more than we have? I just thought we were investigating something odd about the Quagsire's diet from there."
[21:29:00 ][zoofman] Alex scratches her head, moving toward the boat.  "I'm not sure what you're talking about.  What were you told?"

[21:35:21 ][Lucian] "We heard we'd be meeting with Grit Labs but that's about it."
[21:36:27 ][castfromhp] "I think you're just catching a ride with us. We have our own assignment from Professor Grit." Lawrence gestures to a bulging bag on deck, and you can see what looks like Pokemon eggs peeking out of it.
[21:36:54 ]* Adrienne sidesteps and looks down at what Arthur's playing with.
[21:37:10 ][zoofman] Alex shrugs.  "I think he mentioned the local Watchers wanted us to do something too, but they didn't mention a joint thing."
[21:39:12 ]* Lucian frowns, "Aw, that's kind of disappointing."
[21:39:23 ][Lucian] "It would have been nice to get to know you two a little better."
[21:39:45 ][@Doxy] You see that Arthur is playing with a TM! Huh, where'd he get something like that??
[21:40:42 ]* Adrienne crouches down and extends her hand, palm up. "Where'd you get that, Arthur?"
[21:40:45 ]* Lucian plants his arms on both of their shoulders and smiles up and down at them respectively, "I guess we ought to make the most of the time we have now then, huh?"
[21:43:04 ][zoofman] Alex jolts at the shouldertap and sighs. "I guess it was hard to sleep anyway, with that Chad guy singing all morning."
[21:43:31 ]* Dann- 's shovel falls out of its harness again with a loud 'clang'. He scrambles to pick up before it slips into the water. "...sorry."
[21:43:48 ][@Doxy] Arthur puts a Quash Tm in Adrienne's palm and shrugs impishly.
[21:44:24 ][castfromhp] "Hey, maybe he can teach us some songs to pass the time!" Lawrence says cheerily.
[21:44:59 ][zoofman] Alex glares daggers at Lawrence.
[21:45:43 ]* Lucian grins sheepishly at the jolt but doesn't pay it much mind, "So what is there to do on the boat anyway?"
[21:45:50 ]* Adrienne patscratches Arthur on the head. "What am I going to do with you?"

[21:48:53 ]* Dann- seems eager to get on board. Once he's moved all of his gear onto the ship, he pulls out some rope and sits down to work on something.
[21:49:26 ]* Lucian lets out Merric, eager to let the Corsola out to see the open sea and all the new faces.
[21:50:28 ]* Adrienne decides to release Mina and Rami once she's pocketed the TM, letting her three Pokemon hang out together.
[21:52:40 ][castfromhp] It's not longer before Lawrence is joining Chad in song, this time while he brushes an Eevee's fur.
[21:56:53 ]* Percival released Fumu and Sukafi so that they might see the ocean.
[21:57:39 ][Dann-] After a while, Dann stands up triumphantly. He has...somehow lassoed his shovel to his new fishing rod. For what purpose, no one can tell.
[21:58:19 ]* Adrienne questions Dann. "... Why?"
[21:58:58 ][Dann-] "Everything is better when a shovel is involved. Call me superstitious, but it hasn't failed me yet."
[21:59:01 ][castfromhp] It's not long before the boat sets sail. Anything you'd like to do during the ride over?
[21:59:05 ][Dann-] Once the trip is underway, he readies some bait and casts out a line, calling out Winston and Glyce to keep him company while he waits.
[21:59:08 ]* Lucian shushes Adrienne, "Remember, Benedict didn't choose us for academic merits."

[22:00:44 ][Adrienne] "Yeah, I'm beginning to see your point," she whispers conspiratorially to Lucian.

[22:00:57 ]* Dann- has fashioned this contraption such that the shovel head is on the opposite side of the rod where the line is attached. If he gets something on the line, he stands one foot on the shovel head to keep the pole rooted while he pulls up on the rod.
[22:02:15 ]* Lucian smirks, "Nice try, but I've probably got the most sparkling academic credentials out of us four."

[22:07:07 ][@Doxy] Dann YANKS the pole REEL HARD (haha see the funny play on words I made), and a fish goes flying into the air, above his head, and lands on the deck, flopping about!

[22:07:27 ]* Lucian hums, "Or maybe even /because/ of it."
[22:08:13 ][zoofman] Alex takes a glance over to her own travel companion, whose probably covered in mareep and eevee still, and hrms. "I seee...."
[22:09:27 ]* Lucian notices the look and leans in close, "Ohoho, I see, indeed."
[22:09:33 ][Lucian] "Does he know yet?"
[22:09:37 ]* Adrienne rolls her eyes in an overly exaggerated way. "You're an F if I ever saw one, Lucian."

[00:05:40 ][zoofman] "There's been several reports of property damage, wild Pokemon attacks, and the Fairies around the reserve acting on fritz lately.  There's a lot of small backwater towns around Hollyhock, and its hard to keep tabs on all of them sometimes."
