  1. 1) Cultural globalization has negative aspects to be sure; it is causing a backlash as people face the loss of their own cultures. Some analysis content that the growth of religious fundamentalism and even terrorism is a reaction to cultural threats. Other analysis believe that defense of cultural traditionalism could even lead to culture wars in the future, with the world dividing itself into antagonist cultural groups. A third worry is represented by Allan Brian Soenyonga, who worries that, "the rest of the world seems to be following Uncle Same....and leaving behind the authentic ways of life."
  2. Proponents of the school of thought content that countries like USA are using globalization as an engine of "corporate imperialism", one which tramples over the human rights of developing societies, claims to bring propsperity, yet often simply amounts to plundering and profiteering.
  3. Another negative effect of globalization has been cultural assimilation via cultural imperialism. Al a closer look, globalization is slowly shifting towards Americanization. Critics now say globalization is nothing more than the imposition of American culture on the world. When encountered unwillingly, it has negative connotations.

  6. As any socialogist will tell you, even having "no culture" is a culture in itself. This transmission of American culture has been mainly through several conduits, with the number one medium being the electronic media. Television in particular has done much in Americanizing those who view images especially from Hollywood. Many countries now have equivalents of the American awards of Oscars for the movies and Grammys for the music. Many countries have gone ahead to construct theme parks based on the American Disney World model.
  7. The USA has demonstrated a heavy influence in the development of the internet and its subsequent control. The iPod, the most popular gadget for portable digital music, is also an American innovation. American pearcher are always globetrotting, all in the name of spreading the word of "God", our Constitution enshrines individual freedom of religious practice, which courts have interpreted as "separation of church and state." This natotion is one of the controversial aspect of exporting American culture. Globalization seems to be hijacked by the American, and this can be misleading. Globalization has the ability to alter much more than just the movies or food consumed by a society. The results can be powerfully positive, devastatingly negative, or more often something in between.

  10. Cooperative ventures may be a way to improve global prospects but they frequently do not meet performance expectation (Rad-way, 1986). Executives both from foreign parent companies and from local companies were dissatisfied with the performance of more than one-half of their inter-national joint ventures.
  11. Many western corporations seek cooperative ventures as a "quick fix" to global competitiveness without understanding the relationships being established and the behavioral and cultural issues involved. Domination based on financial ownership and tight control is giving way to partnership based on mutual interests, trust and the management of ongoing relationships.
  12. The potential benefits of cooperative ventures are real but not gauranteed. From the research (Beamish 1984, 1988; Lane and DiStefano, 1988; Beammish and Wang, 1989) the principal observation is that the problems and failures are related primarily to deterioration of relationships and unresolved conflicts between partners resulting from deficits in the process of initiation and implementation, and to the lack of management attention after the venture has started operating. The defects often stem from the unobtrusive influences of culture on behavior and on management systems (Hofstede, 1980). Compatibility between partners is the most important factor in the endurance of a global alliance, and differences between national cultures, if not understood, can lead to poor communication, mutual distrust and the end of the venture (Perlmutter and Heenan, 1986).
