  1. Dear Dr. Dyke,
  2.
  3. My name is Payton Case and I am contacting you to express my interest in Purdue’s Resilient ExtraTerrestrial Habitats research group. I am quite interested in spaced based habitats, specifically inflatable habitats like Bigelow Aerospace’s Expandable Activity Module on the ISS and Sierra Nevada’s recent prototype Lunar Gateway Module. Recently, I’ve become interested in the use of additive manufacturing for extraterrestrial habitats like AI SpaceFactory’s system, which won NASA’s 3D-Printed Space Habitat Challenge. I came across RETH while trying to find a Purdue group working on similar projects to those interests. I am quite excited by your program after reading your recent publications. I have since spoken with multiple previous students who had worked on the team, including Herta Montoya, Hayley Bower, Sanchit Badamikar, and Jacob Just about their experiences with RETH and SURF and all of them reaffirmed my interest in the program and pointed me in your direction to get involved.

  5. I am currently a sophomore in the school of aeronautical and astronautical engineering with a focus on system design. I have completed multiple independent projects such as modeling a P-51D Mustang with technical drawings from Boeing and simulating the movement of a piston in an engine both in CATIA V5; I have attached links to images of those projects as hyperlinks. I also have a good amount of programming experience from my time with Purdue Orbital, where I collaborate with a team of graduate students to model the combustion chamber of our developmental hybrid rocket motor in MATLAB to predict combustion conditions. Finally, I am an excellent communicator with 6 years of debate experience and 3 national recognitions for Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

  7. I recognize that my sophomore status in engineering may detract from my chances of being able to research on the team. However, there are some factors that would make me a valuable asset to the group. First is that my sophomore status means that I have much more time to work long term on multiple research projects over numerous years with the program. Second is that I am experienced in CAD design and received the highest score in my class for a course focusing on CAD and tutor students in CATIA V5 and SolidWorks. Finally, and most importantly, is my relentless ambition to learn and work towards solutions. Given the opportunity, I can dedicate as much time and energy as necessary to not only produce a satisfactory solution but an outstanding one. If there were anything that I needed to learn in order to work effectively with the group, I would be happy and excited to learn it.

  9. I would love to meet with you to further discuss RETH as well as if there are any ways I can get involved in the program for Spring 2020 and/or Summer 2020 through SURF (though I would love to get involved this semester as well if at all possible!). I am available to meet with you at any time on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays as well as on weekends if you are on campus. I have attached my resume which details some of my relevant experience and skills, if you need anything else from me, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

  11. Thank you,
  12.
  13. Payton Case
