Why am i surrounded by a bunch of fools? That's what I  thought as I sat at my desk in class. Why do I have to sit here in this class when I already know everything this fool of a teacher is teaching? I know how to handle a weapon, that's really all I need to know, I already know everything.
“Daniel?”My head jerked up as I stared at my teacher, Mrs. Wilks.
“Yes?
“Can u tell me what's so interesting about the wall?”.
“Uhhh….” ,Ringggg thankfully saved by the bell. I quickly walked out of class before i was stopped by my mother. That's when I passed the hovering message board. Laser tag read the board, tonight at 8 pm at the playing grounds. I stared as I thought about how nothing ever comes out good when I go somewhere. I was knocked out of my staring by a guy bumping into me. I glared at him as the walk with his friends. Then. I looked back at the board. You know what why not ? And Tthen and there is where I decided to go to a laser tag game that would change my life forever.
As I walked into the playing fields i could see groups of kids everywhere. Oh… I felt something suddenly push me forward as i fell. I looked up as a group of guys laughed as they walked away. I caught the look of their leader… the same guy who bumped into me earlier today. People don't have manners yeesh, I thought as I brushed myself off. My head jerked up as our headmaster came over the speakers.
“Students it's time for our laser tag game. Four names will be drawn from the bowl those four will be our team captains. Then those four will choose 15 players each. Let's begin.”
He reached into the bowl and drew four pieces of papers.
“Jade Martinez. April Wilmot. Sunny Alvarez. And last but not least...Gwendolyn Heights.”
I grounded internally when I heard the last name. What the hecc? Of all people, why that guy? But i knew why that guy. That guy was always chosen to do everything. That guy
was the Headmaster’s son… and my childhood ex best friend. He was also the guy that likes to annoy me by bumping into me all the dang time.
I was pulled out of my thoughts as I heard someone call my name. I looked up and there he was, Gwendolyn Heights.
“Wanna join my team?”he asked.
“Nope”, I answered
“well , you really don't have a choice everyone else has already chosen their team and you're the only player left.”
Crap, i thought. I stared at him and said,”Fine, whatever”.
And we all turned and walked to the Red teams”s (our team) deck. I just watched silently as the rest of the team started planning and strategizing the game. That's when I made eye contact with Grewdolyn. Grey eyes stared at blue eyes. That's when we heard over the intercom, Players to your starting points. I broke many staring contests and started walking towards the starting point.
Once we got there we started getting  our vests and guns. Then, we just waited for the siren signaling the start of the game.
And we heard a siren all right. Just not the siren we all expected. We all recognize this siren. Although this was the first time any of us had heard it in real life. It was the Siren of Invasion. Invasion from the east. YOu see ever since the world got all bad after wars, and parts of America went underwater, Our nation split itself into two parts, the East, which is considered the poor part and the West which is considered the richer and higher class part. I lived in the West. and The Bbeast likes invading us and starting wars. But, there hasn't been anyaway for 10 years. NoneAll of us students hadn't been born yet.
My head jerked up as we heard screams the siren was still going. Thats when we heard the headmaster yelling, “Go home, somewhere safe, get out of here the East are invading”.
I was frozen as some ran fromform our team and others stayed and quickly talked to each other. I blinked as someone shook my shoulder. I looked up into Blue eyes. “Hey, Day, I know you're kinda freaking out right now but it's going to be ok. JUst come with us and let's go somewhere safe.”
“What? Are you crazy? I'm not going anywhere with you”.
“Day, we don't have time for this. Let's go now… Please.
“No”.
Gwen just stared at him and the more he stared the more i regretted saying no. he looked torn. Torn between leaving me and going to safety or staying with me until i went with him. I frowned as i kept thinking. No dont u remember what he did last time he asked you to go somewhere? He and his friends tied me up in the woords and left me there all night. That night I cried the most i have ever cried. I was terrified of the dark. And
I kept thinking he's my best friend why would do this. From that night on, me and him stopped being friends.
I looked back at Gwen. I could hear the sirens in the background, screams, people running. But all I could see was him.
“Ok, i'll go with you” I said as I took his outstretched hand. “But dont make me regret this”.

We ran. We ran as fast as we could. Then there was a flash of light and a what sounded like loud thunder.  There were screams. I was terrified. I was suddenly pushed to the ground as another loud boom was heard. I heard a calm voice in my ear. “Its bombs. They're bombing us. We have to go find shelter now. I know of a bomb shelter that we can go to. Stay close to me and keep your head down.”Gwen looked at me, “And run as fast as you can. Got it?”
“Got it.”
And then we ran. We kept running until we went to where Gwendolyn said the shelter was. “We’re here.” that was the last words I heard Gwen say before the loudest sound I have ever heard filled my ears and my world went black.
I couldn’t breathe. Everything tasted like smoke. Where was Gwen? I couldn't open my eyes. I could hear people talking. But what were they saying? Help me. Someone please help me. I need Gwen. That's what I tried to scream but I couldn't move. I could only scream the words in my mind.
“I think he’s waking up.”
I heard the voice but it was foggy. But, as they the voice and other voices kept talking, they became less foggy. Finally I could open my eyes. Everything was white. Where am I?
“Hello, Daniel.” My eyes focused on a white figure not that far away. “Who are you?”, I said. “I’m Marie Sweets. Head doctor of the East.” as the figure walked closer, I could see it was a tall woman, with brown hair. I stared in shock. The East? I was in the East? No. I thought in terror. They’re going to kill me. That's what the East does is attack and kill the people of the West. As  Dr.Sweets saw the look of terror on my face, she said, “Its ok. Everything you’ve learned in the West is not entirely true. We’re not going to kill you Daniel. We have no reason to. Just listen to what we have to say, ok?”
I stared at her and replied, “Ok.”
And that's where I realized that everything I ever knew was a complete lie.
The West had lied to us. They had used us. The whole point of the academy was just so they could train us to attack the East. the East was never the ones that attacked us. The West was always the ones who started the wars. The west’s whole pln was to train us in the academy and then send us against the East and kill them in order to take over the East’s land.
After they were done explaining all I could think of was one person. Gwen. I need Gwen. I guess i voiced my thoughts out loud because I vaguely heard Dr. Sweets say to one of her co-workers get the other boy. I couldn't see or think. I was in shock. That's when I felt arms wrap around me. I heard a voice in my ear say, “its ok, Day. I'm right here. Calm down.” and i broke down.i started crying. And as I cried, I realized something. Gwen was always the one person that was there. I had never noticed over the years. But, he was always there. Watching and helping me without me realizing it. He was my best friend. The one person I could always trust.
As I cried I whispered over and over again, “Thank you.”
