  1. Generation 4: Weavile was a premiere offensive Pokemon on Ice teams thanks to its incredible Speed tier and plethora of offensive utility in Pursuit trapping and priority. The prevalence of Psychic in the metagame was an especially important reason for Ice to have Weavile, as it’s able to Pursuit trap threats such as Azelf, Starmie, Medicham, Gallade, and Alakazam, while also severely denting Cresselia. Alternatively, it could run Low Kick as a means of KOing Steel types such as Heatran, Magnezone, and Lucario. It could choose between either Life Orb or Choice Band as its item, and while Choice Band had a chance of KOing Medicham with Pursuit on the switch, Life Orb was the preferred item to let Weavile switch up between its moves. However, Weavile was unable to KO Psychic types that possessed a part Steel typing such as Metagross, Jirachi, and Bronzong, and the influx of Fighting in the metagame didn’t do Weavile any favors either, even if it could revenge kill Breloom and Medicham. Regardless, Weavile stayed as an incredibly prevalent threat on Ice teams.

  13. Generation 5: Just like in the previous generation, Weavile was a potent offensive threat for Ice teams. The new Psychic type threats introduced in this generation(Victini, Meloetta, Reuniclus) as well as the rise of Ghost made Weavile a much more valuable asset. Steel being slightly less prevalent was also a solid factor for Weavile. Pursuit trapping was always an important role, but Low Kick stayed being a solid option for some newer threats like Kyurem-B, Ferrothorn and Cobalion. Unfortunately, the prevalence of Fighting was bigger than ever, and Weavile couldn’t do much of anything against threats like Choice Scarf Terrakion and Keldeo. Despite these faults, Weavile was in an even better position this generation thanks to the increased value of its role.

  32. Generation 6: This generation is definitely the one where Weavile excelled the most. Not only did Weavile get a buffed Knock Off as well as a much better Ice STAB in Icicle Crash, but Steel no longer resisted Dark. This meant that bulky Jirachi, the most common set on Psychic at the time, couldn’t survive a Life Orb Knock Off and was susceptible to Pursuit trapping. Psychic rose as the undisputed best type in the metagame, and with this increased the number of threats susceptible to Pursuit trapping. This list ranged from Mega Gardevoir, Mega Medicham, Hoopa-U, and the aforementioned Jirachi. Due to the weather nerf, Sand Rush Excadrill was an especially dangerous threat to Ice teams, relying on Weavile’s Pursuit trapping role even further. However, Low Kick was still a notable option for hitting all of its old targets, as well as some new ones like Mega Gyarados and Mega Tyranitar. Ghost ended up losing Mega Sableye in this generation, which was Ghost’s only defensive answer to Weavile. Fighting’s decrease in usage was another great advantage for Weavile in this generation. However, this generation did introduce a plethora of offensive threats to Weavile, such as the aforementioned Sand Rush Excadrill, Mega Scizor, and Mega Lopunny. There was also the introduction of the Fairy type, giving Weavile more threats to watch out for such as Clefable, Mega Diancie, and Sylveon. These faults did not however stop Weavile from being the best it’s ever been in Monotype.
