Le reti neurali sono una tecnologia dal potenziale inimmaginabile. Disegnano, compongono musica, traducono, interpretano radiografie, riconoscono volti, prevedono l’andamento dei mercati. Fanno cose che fino a poco tempo fa erano nel reame della fantascienza. Imparano e si stanno evolvendo a una velocità quasi inquietante.

Siamo davanti a una nuova frontiera e proprio per questo, ora che la tecnologia è giovane e non è ancora entrata nei dibattiti legislativi, è fondamentale ragionare sulle sue implicazioni etiche.

Il corpus di dati metabolizzato da queste macchine contiene il contributo impossibile da quantificare di generazioni e generazioni di esseri umani. Si fonda sull’immaginario collettivo e sul sapere dell’umanità, due beni sacri e inviolabili, che dobbiamo a tutti i costi proteggere dall’appropriazione e dagli interessi privati.

Per questo riteniamo che i frutti delle macchine neurali debbano essere messi al servizio della collettività. Devono essere usati per facilitare la vita di chi lavora, non per svalutarne le professionalità. Devono ridurre gli orari lavorativi, non le buste paga.

Questa decisione, così importante per il nostro futuro, non può essere lasciata soltanto nelle mani della minuscola percentuale di individui o aziende che può permettersi di investire e sviluppare queste tecnologie.

Pretendiamo di avere una voce in capitolo.

Neural networks have an unimaginable potential. They can draw, they can translate, they can compose music. They can read x-rays, recognize faces and predict the stock markets. They do stuff that not long ago was considered science fiction. They are learning and evolving so quickly that it’s almost unsettling.

This is a new frontier and for this very reason, now that the technology is still young and outside of the legislative debate, it’s crucial to think about its ethical implications.

The corpus of data metabolized by these machines contains the unmeasurable contribution of countless generations of humans. Its building blocks are the collective imagination and the knowledge of humanity, two sacred and inalianable treasures that we must at all cost protect from appropriation and private interests.

This is why we think that the fruits of neural networks should be used for the benefit of everyone. They must be used to make the workers’ life easier, not to diminish their professionalism. They must reduce working hours, not wages.

This is a crucial decision for our collective future and it cannot be left to the tiny percentage of individuals and companies that can afford to invest and develop these technologies.
