Night befell over Vermillion City as the police were ready to change guard at the police station. A dirty-blonde-haired man wearing a blue police uniform went to Officer Jenny and saluted her. “Jenny, I’ll take over for now. You go get some rest.” The man said. “Thanks Arch, I could count on you to help.” She said. Jenny was about to head off when the two could hear a faint whisper. “Gaaaaaar…” “Did you hear that?” Jenny asked. “Probably just the wind.” Archie said. Just then, the street lights flickered. The two could see a dark energy formed into a ball. “What the…” “Gen…” Archie recognized the kind of ball that the shadows were forming into. “JENNY! GET DOWN!” Archie said, grabbing Jenny and pulling her down. “GAR!” The ball flew towards the two, barely missing them as they headed down to the pavement. Archie and Jenny looked up and saw a giant shadow with two red eyes and a constant grin. “Archie, what the heck that!?” Jenny asked. “I have no idea! Hey! Do you know what you’re doing, punk!?” Archie asked the ghost, but it didn’t reply. It simply murmured… “Gengar…” It spoke. “Gengar? What, is that supposed to be your name? You must be one of those Rocket thugs. Don’t worry, Jen. I’ll handle this.” Archie said as he cracked his knuckles. “Gengar…” The ghost said as it held out a fist. A dark purple energy built up on its fist. It tried to throw a punch at Archie, but he sidestepped the punch. He opened his mouth as fire flew from his mouth and formed fangs. “FIRE FANG!” He chomped down. The fire cut through the shadows, but didn’t hurt the ghost. “What the!?” Archie muttered before getting punched out by another Shadow Punch. “GAH!” Archie got knocked onto the wall, knocked out. “ARCHIE!” Jenny ran to him and checked up on him. She looked at Gengar as she saw his sinister smile. For a moment, she felt her life flash before her eyes. She saw the bright light at the end of the tunnel… Well, she thought it was the light of the afterlife. To her surprise, the crowing of roosters confirmed that the sun was rising. Gengar faded away. Jenny slumped to her knees, muttering to herself: “What… was that thing?” ________________________________________ Day broke out on the SS Anne, a woman stood over and watched the ocean. She had bright pink hair, bright blue eyes, a long white dress and a pink bow on her hair. “I see… So a storm is approaching… Winds… guide me. Tell me who will bring hope to this world.” She held her hands together and closed her eyes. “Xerneas… Heed my call… Tell me what I must do to save this world from devastation…” She hymned. The wind picked up as she heard a faint, yet majestic voice. “You are on the right path, young one. The world’s hope rests in the redemption of a man. If he is to count up his crimes, then he will be this world’s last hope. If he fails, then this world’s fate is for the darkness to decide.” It spoke. “I see… I will do my part then, Xerneas.” She said. The ship stopped at the Vermillion docks. Getting off, she thought carefully of Xerneas’ words. It was pretty obvious to her what they were though, and so she headed off to the police station. ________________________________________ Officer Jenny sat at her desk, still shocked from the attack. She was on the computer looking up various information about this… Gengar, but none were popping up. At least not in her criminal records. “I don’t get it… This guy’s able to manipulate energy, but he’s not in Team Rocket’s ranks! It’s like he was a ghost or something!” Jenny said. Just then, she saw the door open. She minimized the records and looked at the patron, the pinked haired woman. “And what can I help you with, young lady?” She asked her. “I wish to see your jail cells, please. There’s someone I wish to bail.” She said. “Bail? I didn’t post any bail for these guys. Who are you and why are you asking this?” Jenny asked. “My name is Sylveon. It is urgent that I get someone out of jail.” She said. “Well, you’re going about it the wrong way. Most people try to blow up the jail to get people out or stage impossible heists.” Jenny said. “That’s what a criminal would do. I’m no criminal. I’m working on a higher duty. It’s urgent that I find a man who seeks redemption. Or the world could be in peril!” Sylveon said. “Ooooh noooo… The world would be in jeopardy if you don’t see the thugs that we arrest. Look kid, this isn’t some sort of anime where you can just find a hero inside anyone. There are real thugs out there, and we have some locked inside.” Jenny said. “Maybe one is seeking redemption.” Sylveon said. “No one’s seeking redemption, Sylvie. They just count up their crimes and do time. The ones we capture, anyways.” Jenny said. “Let her in. If they act rowdy, I’ll handle ‘em.” Jenny turned to see Archie with an arm cast and a bandage wrapped around his head. “No! Absolutely not! You nearly got yourself killed by that… that thing!” Jenny said. “Thing?” Sylveon asked. “Hey! Don’t nose into other people’s business! See what you did, Arcanine? Now this idealist wants to know what happened!” Jenny said. “Relax. She doesn’t have to know. All she’s here for is the people in our cells.” Arcanine said. He headed into the hall of jail cells, then turned to Sylveon. “You coming, Sylvie?” Arcanine asked. “Uh… Yeah.” Sylveon said. She followed him. ________________________________________ In the hall, almost all the cells were occupied by people. All of them looking pretty thuggish. “Alright, pick a cell, any cell.” Arcanine said to Sylveon. She looked towards one cell and saw a man sitting on the bench.
