VAR 21 Game State 03 At Choose Character during normal gameplay, allows you to automatically pick up items and also go through doors without having to Walk To them. you have to use the keyboard shortcuts in order to perform most actions, as attempting to click on the verb window will do nothing. 200 During cutscenes 01 During normal gameplay allows most input VAR 23 Camera X Position VAR 25 Walk Speed In both versions, set variable 25 to 0 for super fast walk speed. Default is 4 for normal walk speed. Increasing this number will slow it down, decreasing it will speed it up. 0 is the fastest. Anything above x is nearly unplayable. S VAR 40 Cutscene Skip Function Key Defaults to 4 (F4) You can change this to 1 to make it F1, and so on This also changes the function of the right mouse button and the second joystick button. If you set this to 5, for instance, F5 will no longer bring up the load/save dialog screen. However, it will mean that pressing the right mouse button or the second joystick button *will* bring up the save/load screen. VAR 47-49 Kids Similar to VAR 1, except you can set the individual kids no matter what current kid you have selected. VAR 47 = Dave VAR 48 = Kid 1 VAR 49 = Kid 2 Note that if you change any of these, and then switch to that kid using "New kid" or any of the 3 function keys, you'll see a black screen. This is because the kid has not been assigned to a room yet. Just push "SHIFT-G" and enter any valid room number. Also, keep in mind that if you set Kid 2 to Bernard, pick up a key, and then set Kid 2 to Razor, Razor will not have the key. You'll have to set Kid 2 back to Bernard. Or, set him to Kid 3. When you set any of these to a new kid, the old kid will still be in whatever room you left them in. This is interesting because they are still a part of the game. As a result, if you stick Bernard in the hallway, then push the doorbell, Ed will interact with him even if he isn't set to Kid 1, 2, or 3. The game will crash as you set more and more kids to these variables. So far it seems that only 3 kids can be in the same room at the same time. VAR 67 Seems to determine whether or not your code was accepted in any code entry screen. This is set to 0 before you get to the keypad screen. Then, if you hit a wrong number, it is set to 1. When you have entered 4 numbers, you'll go back to seeing yourself. The game now checks this variable. If it is 0 the door opens, the safe opens, or you'll call Edna, etc. If it is anything else, the door will not open, or Edna will not be called, and so forth. For the Steel Security Door, the alarm will sound. More options in the enchanced version. Snap Scroll is an added feature to v2 that can speed up game performance. When you get to the edge of the screen, the game "snaps" to the next portion of the room you are in, instead of scrolling smoothly to it. Any 286 12mhz+ machine doesn't really need this feature. A 4.77mhz machine, however, would benefit from Snap Scroll. Two Disk Mode / Single Disk Mode If you are a fancy-pants type of person with two floppy drives, you can enable this mode so that you don't have to constantly swap disks throughout the game. Single Disk Mode is the opposite -- you only have one floppy drive and the game will ask you to swap disks. The original game, including your one allowed savegame, can fit on to one 360k low-density 5.25" floppy. Therefore, you did not need to swap disks in this version. The enhanced version, because of the updated graphics, requires about 660k. If you are playing from a 3.5" disk, a high-density 5.25" disk, or from your hard drive, you are ok. 5.25" low-density users have the game split over two disks. Graphics Options While the original allows all of the same graphic mode options as the enhanced version, when you switch graphics modes, the game does not say anything and just switches the modes in the original version. The original version does allow one more graphic option, which is mono CGA. The mono CGA mode is the 640x200 CGA mode, You can activate this by hitting SHIFT-B. This does not seem to be accessible from the command line. Both versions offer composite output. The output is terrible when you compare it to games like King's Quest I and Ultima IV, both of which took advantage of the color artificating found in the NTSC standard. Instead of getting and almost-EGA 16-color output, you get a terrible mix of red and purple. It seems composite mode was added as an after-thought. In both versions, it doesn't seem to matter if you enable or disable composite mode, as on my original IBM CGA card (the insanely long one that only fits into 8-bit ISA slots), composite mode *always* works. In fact, in the enhanced version, you can only enable composite mode by modifying the "prefs" file by hand. Are you sure you want to restart? (y/n) In the enhanced version, the game is nice enough to ask you this question when you press "F8". In the original version, the game just restarts without prompting you. The enhanced version adds a text rate, so that you can speed up the dialogue in the game, from 0 (slowest) to 9 (fastest). You cannot scroll past "2" without crashing the game, however. Attempting to scroll backwards from "1" will crash the game, too.
