45. A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine.
 46. In the battle front of espionage and code cracking of World War II, there remains but one task on the Allied agenda: the capture of a German "Enigma" machine which will allow the Allied naval forces to locate and track submerged German U-Boat submarines. When one such German vessel breaks down after a battle with British forces, a secret mission is dispatched to take over the U-Boat by commando American forces and retrieve an Enigma machine intact. The raid goes well, at first, yet following the destruction of the American mothership and the arrival of reenforcement German ships, the Americans trapped on the U-Boat must use their training and wits to pilot U-571 in order to save their lives.
 47. I kept being reminded of submarine movies I saw (often unwillingly because of my older brother liking them) in the 1950's. All the plot and character cliches are intact here. Comparing the two era's version of this, I'd say the acting was better then, the special effects (the BUDGET!) much better now. The star was really the theatre's sound system. As the inevitable facts from history rolled on screen at the end, I leaned over to my companion and whispered, "And featuring Miss Drew Barrymore as 'the stowaway!'" Would that it had!
 48. It is an awful and insulting re-writing of World War II history. It is factually wrong throughout and so predictable in it's story-line that it is not worth the bother of wasting 2hrs of your life to watch it.

It is utterly impossible to suspend your belief for long enough to get any enjoyment at all from it. By the end I just kept hoping they would all die and get it over with - it didn't matter anyway as Bletchley had an Enigma machine from 1939 onwards anyway.
 49. Never lets down, even if depth of character always takes second place to depth charges.
 50. No. It was never intended to be a documentary. It's an action/suspense film based on submarine warfare during WWII. Inspired by actual events, as the majority of WWII movies are. The actual U-571 was never captured by either the British or the Americans - she was sunk off the Irish coast by a torpedo launched from a Shorts Sunderland Flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.

(It should be noted that U-570 was captured by the British on her first patrol and saw service as HMS Graph from 1942 until 1944, when she was withdrawn from service due to maintenance issues).

The Enigma machine was actually first captured by the British, a fact the filmmakers acknowledged in the end credits of this movie. Out of the thousands of hours logged by U-boats, there is only one recorded incident in which a German captain gave the order to fire on torpedoed survivors. U-boat crews were more humanitarian and often provided aid to their victims before submerging. They very rarely brought survivors with them as space on a boat was extremely cramped for its own crew; often times the U-boats just simply left them to die, as seen in Das Boot. So the shooting of survivors in this film could be seen more as mercy killings rather than leaving them to die.

In terms of the film, it's likely that because U-571 was so badly crippled, short on crew members and supplies, with sensitive information aboard, it was too risky to leave the British survivors to possibly report their position. Not to mention, as we see with Taylor and his crew keeping Wassner alive; sabotage is a possibility as well. a5c7b9f00b
