  22. Background of the Study
  23.
  24. Filipinos are very social by nature. With the current advances in technology, socialization has become highly technological and internet based. Many Filipinos know and use Facebook along with other less favored social networking sites and applications like Twitter, Instagram, Viber and WhatsApp. Aside from socialization, all sorts of organizations also utilize social media in the Philippines. Government, non-government, educational and business organizations now have their own Facebook and twitter accounts. Politicians and celebrities also have accounts that Filipino people now follow closely more than the local news. Stores and independent sellers create Facebook accounts to sell and advertise their merchandise. We also use social media often but we would like to think we can live without it. Some kids are being born with accounts on Facebook before they could understand what the internet is, including my own cousins. They’ve never known a world without cellphones and Facebook. We tend to think this is a bad thing because reliance on something that we as individuals can’t control makes us uneasy. There’s too many dangers on the internet no matter how useful it is. Almost everyone we meet has a Facebook account and we keep track of my own old friends using it. We didn’t know how to use computers before the age of ten and we are happy playing with dirt then. Now we see kids as young as four living in a farm nearby playing with a smartphone. We get worried about how this will change and affect how they look at life, their life skills, attention span and all the various studies related to the internet. We hope this research will give us more information and others like us with the same worries. To know if these are just baseless worries or legitimate dangers.

  110. Abstract
  111. The present paper documents a qualitative study that examines the motivating and inhibiting factors that influenced students' engagement in online discussions via Moodle and Facebook. The data was collected through individual interviews with 14 pre-service teachers. Using the Activity Theory as a lens, the study reveals a set of factors concerning the technical tools, subjective perceptions, goals of online discussion, social presence within a community, rules for participation, and roles of the participants that affect their online engagement patterns. The findings of the study inform educators and software designers of how online discussions can be better promoted among students, and how a web-based environment more conducive to learning can be created.
