  18. Demeter Biodynamic Certification
  19. Demeter® USA is the non-profit American chapter of Demeter International, the world’s only certifier of Biodynamic® farms and products. Biodynamic agriculture goes beyond organic, envisioning the farm as a self-contained and self-sustaining organism. In an effort to keep the farm, the farmer, the consumer, and the earth healthy, farmers avoid chemical pesticides and fertilizers, utilize compost and cover crops, and set aside a minimum of 10% of their total acreage for biodiversity. The entire farm, versus a particular crop, must be certified, and farms are inspected annually. In order for a product to bear the Demeter logo it must be made with certified Biodynamic® ingredients and meet strict processing standards to ensure the purest possible product.

  31. Rebecca and Peter Work purchased their 82-acre plot in 1999 in Sta. Rita Hills as a weekend getaway from their corporate jobs in the tech industry, hoping someday to plant a vineyard and make wine. A cancelled meeting in New York City on the morning of September 11, 2001 was their wake-up call that that day had come.
  32.
  33. They picked the right time, and the right place. Today, Sta. Rita Hills has become Santa Barbara County’s most prestigious appellation. In 2002, they moved to the property full time, and, with the help of their son, Don, they produced their first vintage with purchased grapes. To say that the Works had a good teacher is an understatement. Don is winemaker at Sea Smoke Cellars, on the other side of the ridge from Ampelos, and whose wines are consistently well rated. Other mentors include local legends Kris Curran from Sea Smoke and Bruno d’Alfonso, who had been the winemaker at the iconic Sanford winery for over 20 years.

  35. Believing that all great wines are created in the vineyard, the Works named their vineyard Ampelos, the Greek word for “vine.” From the get-go, the Works have been incredibly sensitive about approaching viticulture in an environmentally responsible manner. They sum up this dedication to such sustainable practices with this Amish proverb: “We did not inherit this land from our fathers; we are borrowing it from our children.”
  36.
  37. With these words in mind, they became the first vineyard in Santa Barbara County to hold the triumvirate certifications of Sustainability in Practice (SIP), USDA Organic, and Demeter Biodynamic, the world’s only certifier of biodynamic farms and products.

  39. Tasting Note
  40. The 2007 Gamma Syrah is an opulent and luxurious wine exhibiting an inky purple hue with a touch of pink around the edge. Vibrant, dense fruit explodes from the glass with a jammy perfume of raspberry, strawberry, blackberry and cassis, mingling seamlessly with notes of spice and mineral. There is no noticeable oak, and despite its richness, it weighs in at a balanced 14.2 percent alcohol. Fabulous stuff!
