  2.
  3.
  4.
  5. You're only so tall. You have soft fur. You have a tail, nubby horns on your forehead, and a skull like a hard helmet. You feel your feelings strongly. You're easy to knock down but hard to hurt.
  6.
  7.
  8.
  9. You live in Reign Country, and today it's spring...

  19. You're in the kite field. The spring wind blows up the hill from the West, cold and steady.
  20.

  26.
  27.
  28.
  29. > look around
  30.
  31. The kite field is a high field on the ridge of a hill. On one side (West) the hillside slopes away steeply to a wide valley of fields, with a little farm far below. On the other side (East) the hillside slopes away more gently, but deeply forested. The spring wind blows up the hill from the West, cold and steady. The sky is gigantic, blue, with skudding clouds and your kites looking tiny so high up.
  32.
  33.
  34.
  35. > look at your kite
  36.
  37. Your kite is soaring above the trees, a yellow diamond carried high by the wind.

  39.
  40.

  42.
  43. If you let go of your kite's string, you'll lose your kite forever.
  44.
  45.
  46. The wind gusts up behind you. It smells fresh and icy, and makes your ears chill and your eyes water.
  47.
  48.
  49.
  50. > look at jumbled stones
  51.
  52. A line of jumbled stones runs along the edge of the kite field. It used to be a stone wall, a long time ago. Someone's left a brown glass bottle among the stones.
  53.
  54.
  55.
  56. > take bottle
  57.
  58. Taken.
  59.
  60.
  61. With a roar the wind rushes up the hill behind you, battering and biting cold. Your kite leaps and tries to pull its string from your hand.
  62.
  63.
  64.
  65. > look at Floren
  66.
  67. Floren is your friend. They have big brown eyes and a curl of light brown hair in front of one ear.
  68.
  69. Their kite is soaring, a tiny green diamond high above the trees.
  70.
  71.

  92.
  93.
  94.
  95. > a face
  96.
  97. Someone is staring at you from the edge of the forest. A face you ... recognize? A face like a mask of dread, empty-eyed, cold-hearted, cruel.
  98.
  99.
  100.
  101. You're so frightened that you let go of your kite's string. Your kite leaps and flies wildly away.
  102.
  103.
  104.
  105. Floren doesn't know what happened, but starts reeling in their kite, in case you need help.

  111. You look and look but there's no face in the woods now.
  112.

  114.
  115. > look around
  116.
  117. The sky is gigantic, blue, with skudding clouds. Floren's kite bobs and jerks as they reel it in, and yours is dancing and flying wildly over the treetops.

  129. "I didn't see it," Floren says. "Who was it? Are they still there?"
  130.
  131.
  132.
  133. Floren reels their kite in more quickly still.
  134.
  135.
  136.
  137. Your kite crashes into the trees and you lose sight of it. You've lost it forever.
  138.
  139.
  140.
  141. > "I don't know!"
  142.
  143. Floren wants you to be okay, but doesn't know how to help. They keep reeling their kite in.
  144.
  145.
  146.
  147. > "help me!"
  148.
  149. Floren says, "I've got to get my kite down! You go chase your kite, I'll follow in a second!"
  150.
  151.
  152.
  153. > end conversation
  154.
  155. You stop talking to Floren.
  156.
  157.
  158.
  159. > climb
  160.
  161. You scramble up the giant old maple tree. You think you can see your kite tangled in a treetop in the woods. You think you could find your way there. Maybe you haven't lost your kite forever after all!
