  1. One line review:
  2.
  3. The backing track to a Pink Floyd medley of song intros.
  4.
  5. *** Things left unsaid
  6. An ambient soundscape, reminding me a lot of Momentary Lapse of Reason, or perhaps of Steve Reich. There is a slow melody that seems to build up some harmony around the middle, together with a guitar-like synth [or synth-like guitar]. This section reminds me a lot of Division Bell, but I like the use of implied notes. A good introduction, but somehow not very adventurous. The transition to It's What We Do could have been more dramatic.
  7.
  8. *** It's what we do.
  9.
  10. This is a clear reprise of Wish You Were Here A, only more repetitive and with much simpler keyboard solos. The transitions between sections leave a lot to be desired and the guitar does little more than just filling up some empty space. With regard to the piece's structure, a more extensive chord progressions wouldn't have gone amiss. Overall, there is very little build-up and the piece's climax is tepid, transiting to the next bit out of sheer tiredness.
  11.
  12. *** Ebb and flow
  13.
  14. A bit of inventive synth-guitar work similar to Things left unsaid, coupled with nice organ and bass. Again, some more build up is needed here, some more progression, *something*. It just dies out before having said anything.
  15.
  16. *** Sum
  17.
  18. This is very Steve Reich like initially, then a guitar randomly barges in, but is not sure what to do really, so it just sweeps up and down. The drummer heroically attempts to add something interesting. The underlying structure of the piece is actually quite good, but it would be nice to have something else than the guitar dominate. Once again, there is a certain lack of dynamism. The piece with a short synth riff which fails to develop into anything interesting, but the piece ends instead with an underwhelming crash.
  19.
  20. *** Skins
  21.
  22. Critters in a cave, or maybe the grand vezier's party.
  23.
  24. *** Unsung
  25.
  26. This is really short, so it'd better be good. However, it is just a couple of chords and a whining guitar again. Again, the chord choice could have been more adventurous. This piece demanded a climax, rather than a tired transition to ...
  27.
  28. *** Anisina
  29.
  30. .. which is just a retread of Us And Them with some echoes from The Final Cut. In this piece, however, the sax and guitar work very well together. I credit the sax player, who did the best one could with the material.
  31.
  32. *** The lost art of conversation
  33.
  34. An inoffensive piano piece, which does start very well... it is very promising, but.. it just transitions to..
  35.
  36. *** On Noodle Street
  37.
  38. Yup, just guitar noodling. Sounds good, though, especially with the
  39. organ and vibes. Some development please!
  40.
  41. *** Night Light
  42.
  43. Again the synthy-guitar, with very similar melodies and chords and themes to what happened before. There is a bit more development in this piece, but I am not convinced.
  44.
  45. *** Allons-y!
  46.
  47. Oh, that's a tame version of run like hell. The last bits of the piece do manage to get something across, but it just *ends* again.
  48.
  49. *** Autumn'68
  50.
  51. I love the organ here. And the transition to the next bit works
  52.
  53. *** Allons-y (2)
  54.
  55. Nothing to see here.
  56.
  57. *** Talkin' Hawkin'
  58.
  59. There is an interesting rhythm-bass-line going on, and it seems like there is a bit of a more ambitious progression as well.
  60. Hawking is the best.
  61.
  62. *** Calling
  63.
  64. Oh, yet another one. Half way through we have a good synth line. Which is repeated with another synth. And then with a guitar. I hope it's not then repeated with trombone. Ah, there is a bridge and then a variant line instead, which just transitions to the next piece.
  65.
  66. *** Eyes to pearls
  67.
  68. This starts off with a somewhat repetitive guitar riff, but it's actually interesting. A nice menacing drum beat comes along, but then the piece just DIES again without doing anything more interesting.
  69.
  70. *** Surfacing
  71.
  72. This reminds me of that tune in Division Bell, what's its name. Going 'hey you blah blah'. Anyway, there is some more development here, which is a welcome change.
  73.
  74. *** Louder than words
  75.
  76. It's not a bad tune. The guitar solo is better than the average in the album and there is finally a good development near the end. Why couldn't the rest of the album be like that?
  77.
  78. *** Overall
  79.
  80. A quite inoffensive album. It seems to be made of a bunch of nice ideas, put together, but none of them actually fully developed: just polished to sound nice. Consequently, nothing anywhere grabs your attention. This makes it the perfect album for falling asleep.
