  1. You’ve just moved into a new neighborhood and right before you set off for your first day of school, your father informs you to come home after school immediately on Friday because he’ll be hosting a formal dinner with the resident gang who runs this part of town. You agree of course, seeing as though you are the child of a yakuza boss - and therefore the heir to that title - and promise your dad you’ll be home in time to get ready.
  2.
  3. When you get to first period class, you introduce yourself politely and are seated next to a stern looking blonde boy dressed in a suit rather than the obligated school uniform. You don’t really think much of it, aside from the fact you think his hairstyle is pretty cool, and you say a calm hello which he answers with a curt nod. You think for a moment that he might not really be a talker, but after class he asks casually if you’d like him to walk you to your next class (so you don’t get lost of course!).
  4.
  5. You learn on the way to Biology that his name is Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu. Some of the kids you pass cower when they see him, but you don’t ask and thank him for bringing you to your class safe and sound. You manage to see him during lunch too and he invites you over to sit with him and two boys, a vivid pink-haired boy called Souda and a ordinary looking student called Hinata. All in all, you feel as if you’ve found a good friend in him and you leave school that afternoon with a smile. The rest of your week consists of being toured around campus by Kuzuryuu and his friends. They’re all nice, especially Kuzuryuu, and you can’t help but feel comfortable with such normal friends.
  6.
  7. The dinner party on Friday starts around seven, the guests trickle in all looking fancy as you greet them at the door with your father. Some of the members from the new gang eye you warily while others give you warm welcomes to the neighborhood. The house is full of chatter, your father leaving you to go dabble in conversation as you stand around waiting for the later guests to arrive.
  8. You hear the doorbell after a couple of minutes and when you open it you’re slightly shocked to see a rather familiar face.
  9.
  10. Kuzuryuu is equally as shocked, narrowing his eyes and asking harshly about what you’re doing here. You can't answer because from behind him an older man and a beautiful women come in and introduce themselves to you, the surname identifying them as Kuzuryuu’s parents and the heads of the gang this dinner party is for.
  11.
  12. You do your best to smile because you’re still not over the fact that you’re in the same class as the son of a gang member, even though you are a child of one yourself, and lead the couple to the dining room where everyone is being seated. You respectfully offer to take their coats, Kuzuryuu’s father laughing and calling you a “sweet” kid as your father gives you an approving nod.
  13.
  14. You turn, trying to rush past Kuzuryuu, but he follows you and as you tuck the coats in the closet he corners you and asks about what the hell is going on.
  15. "My dads the head of…."
  16. You trail off because the rest in kind of obvious, Kuzuryuu looks like he needs a moment to process what you’ve said before he’s shaking his head and whispering to himself about his self-proclaimed bad luck.
  17. You curiously ask about what he means by ‘bad luck’ and Kuzuryuu just slumps his shoulders and motions that he’ll be going back to the table.
  18.
  19. The rest of the night is sort of an awkward blur for you. Between chatting up members of your fathers gang, you also do your best to make pleasant conversation with Kuzuryuu’s gang as well. You need to set a good tone so that way there won’t be any turfs wars or complications as such.
  20.
  21. Kuzuryuu avoids you the whole time, disappearing for most of the night until you catch him outside on the front steps playing with a switchblade and you sit down beside him before he can scurry off again.
  22. "I hope we can still be friends…"
  23. You say, laughing sadly.
  24. "I know it’s not a very ‘mobster’ thing to say, but I don’t want you to act cold around me because of my family. I mean we both know the struggles, shouldn’t that make us closer?"
  25. Kuzuryuu shifts his weight and doesn’t answer. Your small smile drops because it looks like he might just get up and leave.
  26. "I don’t mind being friends, we can be friends since our dads like each other, but that’s what we have to stay as - just friends."
  27.
  28. You shoot him a confused look as he sighs and mumbles under his breath.
  29. "And I don’t want to be just friends…."
  30. It takes you a second to figure out what he means, and when you do you’re a blushing mess, looking for the right words to say but only small sounds of surprise are exiting your mouth.
  31. "See, we can’t be together like that-"
  32. "Who says we can’t?"
  33. You cut him short, finally finding your voice.
  34. "Our families? You do remember that even if we’re on friendly terms, we can’t marry into other families."
  35. You fluster again at the word ‘marry’, but Kuzuryuu doesn’t seem to notice and you fret once more until you shake your head.
  36. "That’s not a given- after all silly things like that shouldn’t break people in love apart…"
  37. You whispers, looking down at your fingers.
  38. "And plus, we’ll never know how our families will react if we don’t at least you know - try.”
  39. This time you look up Kuzuryuu who’s staring down at you, the permanent pinkness in his cheeks turning to a bright red when he realizes what you’re offering to do.
  40. "So - that means you- "
  41. "I like you too, yeah."
  42. "But we’ve known each other for a week?"
  43. "That didn’t stop you, did it?"
  44. You giggle as Kuzuryuu huffs, but chuckles along with you before taking your hand softly in his.
  45. Inside the noise level is going up as the adults continue to dine and drink, but you just smile at Kuzuryuu, standing in the small light of your front porch as he comes closer.
  46.
  47. Your eyelids flutter and your head tilts on instinct when his fingers come up to brush your cheek and you think to yourself that maybe this coincidence, the fact that you two live this lifestyle, is the best thing that has ever happened to you.
