  1. Dirk Kendrell was born to a middle-class family in Centurion. He was always a curious kid: he spent his days reading scientific publications as much as novels, messing with a kids' electronics toolkit, and always asking questions, never really growing out of the 'why' phase most kids go through.
  2.
  3. Unfortunately for Dirk, he applied that same desire for knowledge to the reason why he couldn't wear certain things or play with given toys. His father never gave him an answer, only resorted to violence when he got too questioning. His mother never had the courage to step in. Dirk learned to get his answers from the intranet instead. When he realized he was gay, during his early teens, he knew he had to hide it. In the following years he learned how to hide his private life from his parents, how to craft lies to save himself some private space that wouldn't be infringed. That's what you do in such a situation. Unfortunately, at the age of 15, his father found out that he was using the intranet to have a long-distance flirt with another boy. He was furious and beat Dirk up with violence he had never experienced before. In an explosive emotional outburst, something emerged from inside Dirk, with incredible destructive force. His father dropped dead, and that's how Dirk discovered he had psionic powers.

  5. Thankfully, the police never suspected that a 15yo kid could have murdered his father, especially without a weapon, since none was ever found on the crime scene. The man had apparently dropped dead from a cerebral aneurysm.

  7. Dirk was initially terrified of his own powers. It took a while, but he slowly realized that he wasn't at risk of doing something like that again without another massive emotional outburst of that size, which, to be fair, never happened again during his lifetime, nowhere near that same scale. He slowly learned to harness his potential and learned new powers. For instance, he learned he could easily recall information from his memory, which proved to be immensely useful at school.

  9. Dirk's mother, without her husband's paycheck, was forced to find small jobs to keep the family fed. In the meantime, Dirk's achievements at school attracted enough praise to get him a scholarship in a prestigious university ordinarily reserved for the upper class. His mother hung by, waiting for her son to get his diploma and find a high-paying job that could make life easier for the both of them.

  11. Unfortunately, Dirk's mother never lived to see the day when Dirk graduated. During the last year of academia she was shot during a bank robbery. Dirk carried on and finished the year and got his diploma in bioengineering with flying colors, but he was filled with a deep desire for justice. The world wasn't fair, and he desperately wanted something to set it right. He loved science, but the world didn't need another genetic engineer, the world needed someone to keep it safe. Dirk joined the police corps.

  13. Dirk took very seriously the police's job to fend off criminals, crack down on crime, bring security and justice. However, after a couple of years in service, he started to find out that the police and especially the government were not as clean as they pretended to be, but were rather intermingled in illegal and often unethical tangles themselves. Generally, the government would do something illegal/unethical and the police would simply ignore it instead of investigating. The last straw came when Dirk started digging into the folders related to the bank robbery where his mother was killed. He discovered that, suspiciously, little evidence was collected beyond the blatantly obvious, suggesting the police had brushed the case off. Further investigation revealed that the bank had stopped lending money to the government due to ethical objections regarding the way it was being used. The government didn't like it and hired a team of criminals to rob the bank, promising a small but nonetheless tantalizing share of the money. This terrible discovery wasn't the last, either.

  15. Dirk grew increasingly distrustful of the government and dissatisfied with his place in the world. This is when he discovered that, within the police, there was a group of people that shared his sentiments, and that they had founded a small but very dedicated secret team, called The Camerata. Their goals were simple as much as revolutionary and admirable: collect info, recruit new members, and do everything they could and everything they had to do to end corruption in the police and government, no matter what.
  16.
  17. Within the Camerata Dirk Kendrell met his future husband, a dark-skinned man called Norris Brumm. He was as idealistic as Dirk, if less strong-willed and determined. They quickly developed a fondness for each other, and soon married. They resorted to genetic engineering and incubators to have two children of their own, Sarah Brumm and Jack Kendrell. They are respectively now 10 and 6, and Sarah is showing the first signs of possessing psionic potential just like Dirk.
