  1.
  2. >today was the first of a stretch of bad days
  3. >it started off well enough, you found Lulu while she was rummaging through dumpsters and got her something to eat
  4. >while she was eating you decided that you wanted to do something nice for her
  5. "Do you want to go to the park?"
  6. >you couldn't believe the way her eyes lit up, or the way she smiled
  7. >a short train ride later and you're in the part of the city everyone thinks of when you tell people where you live, with all of the skyscrapers and office buildings and fancy coffee shops
  8. >you've never been to a park this clean
  9. >the lack of broken needles and used condoms is a refreshing change of pace
  10. >and it's nice to play outside without having to run for cover
  11. >you buy a Frisbee from a vendor and throw it
  12. >Lulu sprints after it and brings it back to you
  13. >she drops it at your feet and looks up at you expectantly, her tail wagging
  14. >you pat her on the head, feeling her soft fur under your fingers
  15. >you throw the Frisbee again and she laughs and chases after it
  16. >you're so engrossed in your activity that you didn't notice the people staring, or the two men who just walked up to you
  17. "Is that your kid?"
  18. >you turn around at the sound of someone's voice
  19. >it's a large animal, his arms are huge and there are sharp looking tusks coming from his mouth
  20. >you don't like the way he's eyeing you, so you figure you should answer honestly
  21. "No, I just know her from my neighborhood"
  22. >that was a mistake
  23. >he grabs you by your collar
  24. "So you're one a those perverts huh? You like preyin' on little kids?"
  25. >you have no idea what this guy is talking about, but any protests you might have made were cut short by a fist being buried in your stomach
  26. >you forgot how strong anthros can be, his punch nearly lifts you off your feet
  27. >you fall to the ground, your eyes full of stars
  28. >you black out and wake up in a police station
  29. >the cop gives you a sympathetic look
  30. "Look, I'm sorry. You know how these Lakesiders are, some of them can be a bit... overzealous."
  31. >in a way you couldn't blame them, after what happened last summer you'd be suspicious of any man hanging around a kid
  32. >you shake your head
  33. "So can I go?"
  34. >the officer nods
  35. >you leave the station, Lulu is sitting by the entrance
  36. >as soon as she sees you she jumps up
  37. "I'm sorry. I tried to tell them but they wouldn't listen"
  38. >you rub her head
  39. "Don't worry about it."
  40. >the two of you leave the station
  41. >as far as bad days go, getting arrested is definitely up there
  42. >still, the day wasn't all bad
  43. >it could have been a lot worse
  44.
  45. --
  46.
  47. >it was hotter than ever today
  48. >you'd heard that heat does weird things to anthros, but today was confirmation
  49. >you've seen five fights since you left your apartment
  50. >you take special care to avoid attracting any attention to yourself
  51. >you head to the cornerstore to buy something to drink
  52. >it's one of the few business that managed to stay open in this neighborhood
  53. >probably because it's a front
  54. >you get your beverage and leave, bumping into Lulu on your way out
  55. >you sigh, hand her your drink and go back in for another one
  56. >there is no way that was an accident
  57. "So, are you going to go to school in the fall?"
  58. >she nods, she's been looking forward to the school year starting again
  59. >she wasn't the best student, but she was good enough
  60. >besides, state lunches
  61. >you can't blame her for wanting summer to be over, every night on the news there's another story of a kid around her age getting killed either by mistake or intentionally
  62. >you really don't want to think about that right now, so you focus on Lulu
  63. >she's gotten pretty attached to you over the past few weeks
  64. >before you realized it she became a part of your life
  65. >you never thought you'd become attached to someone like this
  66. >Lulu's ears perk up
  67. "Do you hear that?"
  68. >you don't hear a thing, her ears are much more sensitive than yours
  69. "No"
  70. "It sounds like people arguing"
  71. >that was your cue to leave, you've seen enough arguments to know how they usually end
  72. >you and Lulu stand up to go when you hear the all too familiar pop of a nine millimeter handgun
  73. >the argument must have went south
  74. "Man, every day with this huh Lulu?"
  75. >before she can answer you there's a second pop
  76. >she falls to the ground, a red hole on her chest
  77. >she doesn't move
  78. >for a few seconds everything stops
  79. >then it all comes crashing down
  80. >there are screams all around you, but you can't hear any of it
  81. >you're focused on this girl
  82. >the blood on her shirt
  83. >and the pleading in her eyes
  84.
  85. >shit shit shit
  86. >what are you supposed to do in kind of situation?
  87. >your mind goes back to that time you watched that video of a guy bleeding out
  88. >one of the comments said that the people watching should have put pressure on the wound
  89. >you take off your shirt and ball it up
  90. you press down as hard as you can onto the hole in Lulu's chest
  91. >you try and reassure her
  92. "Stay with me. It's gonna be okay, but you need to stay awake"
  93. >she coughs
  94. >you don't know if that's good or bad
  95. >you wonder how much longer it'll take for help to arrive
  96. >eventually you hear sirens
  97. >you look up and see police cars
  98. >the street suddenly fills with cops to contain the citizens
  99. >once they have the scene secure the paramedics come in
  100. >one of them grabs your arm
  101. "We've got her"
  102. >you let them do their job
  103. >Lulu is loaded up in an ambulance and taken to a hospital
  104. >you have no idea what to do but you know you can't stay here
  105. >there's only one hospital near this part of the city so you start walking
  106. >by the time you reach the hospital the sun has gone down and your legs feel like lead
  107. >strangely enough you don't feel tired at all
  108. >you find the receptionist, an older looking owl
  109. >her large eyes have an indescribable weariness to them
  110. "I'm looking for a girl. She was shot, got brought here earlier"
  111. >the woman's face was a mask
  112. "Do you have a name?"
  113. >you blank, she said her name was Lulu, but you have no idea if that's her real name
  114. >you get desperate
  115. "Ma'am, that girl is the only person in this world I care about and I just saw her get shot. I just want to know if she's okay"
  116. >you hold up your hands, covered in her blood
  117. >the woman wasn't moved
  118. "Well I can't tell you anything if you can't give me name"
  119. >you feel yourself getting angry
  120. >someone calls out to you
  121. "Hey, you're that guy from earlier"
  122. >it was one of the paramedics
  123. "I talked to a doctor, she's gonna be fine. She just needs a few days to recover"
  124. >you sigh with relief and slump into a chair
  125. >she was alive
  126. >but, what happens now?
